Round 6 Match v Kissing Point at Greenway 2, Week 1, Sat 21.11.09

WPHC won toss & batted, all out 190, Kissing Point 2-20 in reply at stumps.

With a scorching temperature predicted this was a very good toss to win, our decision to bat straightforward though our middle order was somewhat depleted and our tail-end rather long. Despite the loss of early wickets our batting was held together by another fine innings from Niranjan Sundararaj whose 90 runs truly kept us in the game. Along the way he was ably assisted by Sam Thariani (22) and Luke Christensen (15), who made good his promise at the nets last Thursday to “bat responsibly this week”, while Nikhil Suresh (8) played a handy rearguard innings with the tail. Our total of 190, while a lot less than we might have hoped for, still gives our bowlers something worthwhile to defend.

That defence began well when both our opening bowlers, Joshua Murray-Howard and Ankit Grover rose to the challenge, each claiming a wicket to have Kissing Point 2-20 and the game balanced on a knife’s edge at stumps.

The final day of this match may present us with our toughest challenge yet as our bowling attack, assembled at full strength for the first time this season, prepares to defend our modest total against a Kissing Point team that has plenty of solid batting yet to come. The stage looks set for yet another thrilling finish.
