November 2004 News update

Kanga Cricket Season 2004/2005

The Kanga season is well and truly under way. We have had three beautiful Saturday mornings – Edward Bennett Oval is looking great and our 99 Kanga’s are having fun.

Yes, we are up to 99 registrations this season, and to help show them what cricket is all about we have had 18 parents do our ‘O’ Level coaching course conducted by our own Australian Women’s Team Cricketer, Lisa Sthelaker.

Now some exciting news about next Saturday, November 6. We will be having a visit from NSW Pura Cup player Dominic Thornley, (261 not out playing against WA). Dominic has aligned himself with our club (he lives locally) and has generously given his time to visit as many of our teams as possible through the season.

For his visit to Kanga’s on Saturday, Dominic will visit each Kanga team and time permitting will have a short session on the centre wicket with the managers and coaches.

Make sure everyone is there bright and early. And talking of that, please make sure all Kanga’s are on the ground READY TO START at 8 am each Saturday.

On Wednesday November 10, Northern Districts Cricket Club is holding a celebrity luncheon involving Alan Davidson, Ian Chappell, Michael Clark, Brett Lee and Dominic Thornley. It is at the Sydney Town Hall at 12.30 pm. At $110 at ticket, it is not cheap but will be a great opportunity to meet cricketing greats of yesterday and today.

We have no news from the Association yet regarding the twilight games. If nothing is forthcoming soon we might stage our own. It is a great picnic occasion in which the Kanga’s get to play in a simple competition format in the cool of an early summer’s evening, while the family breaks out a hamper of goodies and let’s see what eventuates.

Parents – Mums and Dads – that old bloke under the Panama hat has been watching you and he can see some latent talent. Perhaps if we can get a bit of rust out of the bones we could issue a challenge to one of our ‘C’ grade sides. What about it? Chance for another social occasion and perhaps a BBQ to finish.

A few housekeeping items:
• Would anyone who has not yet signed the ‘Child Protection Form’ please do so and give it to your son’s team manager. It is a legal matter which we are all obliged to complete and comply with the law.

• If you would like to join the West Pennant Hills Sports Club (adjacent to Edward Bennett Oval), the Cricket Club will join you up and pay your first year’s membership. We encourage everyone to become a member as the Sports Club is a generous sponsor and besides, it is an excellent social meeting place with full licenced facilities including a fine family restaurant.

Gear:
• Remember to check the Kanga’s putting the gear away in the kitbag each week. If you have any shortages or damage, please report it to our Chief gear Steward, David Schubert of The Oval team.

• A coaching point: Encourage work with the batting tee. If the player is positioned so that he or she must take a step forward to strike the ball, they must inevitably play a straight bat.

OWZAT!

John Coulthard
Kanga Cricket Co-ordinator.
