West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club Est. 1946

The West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook CC was formed in 1946 and is the largest Club in the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai and Hills District Cricket Association – itself being formed in 1926. WPHCCC is also one of the largest cricket clubs in Australia.

In 1992, WPHC was one of the pioneers of the Kanga Cricket concept for 6 - 8 year olds - girls and boys. Since then over 1,500 children have been taught to play cricket through our Kanga programme. Next season will be our 17th season of Kanga which makes us one of the oldest continuously running Kanga groups in NSW and possibly Australia.

Kanga will again be available for children aged 6 to 8 years of age in the coming season 2008-09. The game has been specially developed to provide introductory cricket activity for all younger ages using modified equipment and rules – reduced ground size, plastic bats, stumps and soft ball.

Kanga is also an important gateway to a lifetime of cricket enjoyment. Kanga 'graduates' can move into a very well run Junior Competition for U9's to U16's. The children can then move into Seniors. Our A1 side for example has 7 players who started in Kanga and Colts have 8 Kanga graduates. This also applies to our Girls who graduate into their own Competition.

Registration Day will be held on Sunday the 27th July 2008 at Cherrybrook Community Centre. In 2007-08 we registered 101 children and also registered our 1,500th Kanga during the season.

Kanga is meant to be play, before children develop the more structured game based on organised competition. Everyone gets an equal bat and bowl. There is no such thing as a good or bad Kanga cricketer – all of our children get equal opportunity. Encouragement is the motto of 'the way we do things'.

Our aims

  • provide enjoyment for all
  • develop the basic skills of cricket
  • develop team spirit and cooperation
  • provide equal opportunity for all to participate, and
  • develop a balanced attitude to competition
  • provide an opportunity for parents and grandparents to come along and enjoy the game as part of our local cricket community.

We want to provide opportunities for all our Kanga children to have fun, play with their friends, make new friends and develop their sporting capabilities.

Parent involvement

Parents are specifically encouraged to become involved. Each Team of Kangas (we usually have 8 or 9 Teams of about 12 players each) will have a Manager, Assistant Manager, Coach, Assistant Coach and Gear Steward. These positions are filled by volunteer parents, each of who will receive specialised training and full administrative support by the Club.

Those who nominate as Coaches will be invited to attend a special, hands-on, half day seminar/training session conducted by qualified level 2 coaches prior to the season commencement. The parents who become involved, without exception have enjoyed the oportunity of spending quality time with their child.

Kanga parents Info Night

There will be a Kanga parents information night in mid September at the WPH Sports Club. This is a very successful night. Last season NSW Blues star Dominic Thornely made a special guest appearance. Photos of the night are on the website under 'Photo Gallery'

All parents, especially are encouraged to find out what you and your children will be doing on Saturday mornings this summer!
