The 2009-10 Season that finished on the 13th March 2010 was very successful. We entered 2 Teams in B Grade (Secondary School girls) and a C Grade Team (Primary School girls). Both b Grade sides made the Semi Finals. Our Red side went down in a close game and our Blue side were runners up in a competitive Final. Our C grade side also made it through to the Final and were runners-up – well done girls.

This coming season (2010/11) will be our 14th season of offering cricket to girls in their own competition. Since starting in 1996/97 we have entered 42 teams in initially the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Cricket Association and since 2007-08 in the Northern Sydney Girls Cricket Association.

Competition is played against other teams from Hornsby Ku-ring-gai District, North Sydney, Ryde and Manly. This forms the North Shore Girls Cricket Association. Girls of all ages are welcome - from 10 year olds to 15 and 16 year olds. Girls aged 6 to 8 play Kanga and this is very popular.

For Girls wanting to play a higher standard, there are Representative fixtures leading to selection to Emerging Breakers status. Congratulations to Felicity Trinh who achieved this wonderful acknowledgement over the last 2 seasons.

The local pathway for girls wanting to continue playing is with Northern District – our Grade Club.

After Registration day, all Girls will get Coaching from experienced coaches. There is no such thing as a 'bad cricketer' everyone gets equal opportunity with the emphasis being on having fun and skills development.

This competition is an important Gateway to give girls the opportunity to play cricket in Juniors through to Senior competition including Representative cricket to Australian level.

Girl’s cricket – on the move

Our own Lisa Sthalekar is the current Australian Vice-Captain and won the Women’s International Cricketer of the Year Award in 2007 and the prestigious Belinda Clarke Medal last season.

Lisa started played for West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club as a 10-year old until she was 15. From there the rest is history. She played for NSW and is now one of the top players in the world. All this from starting with the local Club.

Girl’s cricket is making an impact. Last year alone there were 18,000 girls registered and playing cricket in NSW (includes School, Club, Senior, introductory programmes). In the last 12 months the numbers registered have increased by 60% in NSW since 2005-06 – more girls are playing cricket than ever before.

In the early days, Lisa played in the Boys competition. Club spokesperson, Denise Annetts (herself a former long term Australian star) says that West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook has had its own Girl’s teams since 1996-97. Over 450 girls have played for the Club in their own Competition across the North Shore.

Lisa remembers her early days of playing when she played with the Boys and was the only Girl in the team. “Now girls of all abilities can play in their own competition for their own local Club”. Starting as young as 6 years of age, Girls can play Kanga cricket and then move into their own competition once they reach 9.

If you are interested in making new friends, just having a hit or want to travel the world and play for Australia, like Lisa, then there is a pathway for girls of all abilities.

Want to know more about Girl’s cricket give Denise Annetts a call on 9476-0595 or visit the WPHCCC web site http://www.wphccc.org
