Club News: Season Wrap-up 22nd March 2008
Junior boys wrap-up
What a tremendous achievement. Our Club has a policy of ‘Participation over results’ so that everyone gets a fair-go. Teams are not graded. The Finals were played on Sunday 10th March and results are to hand.
U16
WPHC Blue (3rd) 63 lost to Upper Hills (1st) 64 (P Bhatia 7/17).
U15
WPHC Blue (1st) 2/130 (K Godfrey 65 and Michael Richards 42) defeated Upper Hills (3rd) 128.
U14
WPHC White (1st) 8/147 (Sid Shanker 43, Darshan Pandya 30) defeated Castle-Hill RSL (3rd) 127 (B Jack 4/22).
U13
WPHC Gold 107 (Tom Lees 38, Arbhi 26) lost to Berowra 9/108.
U12
WPHC Red 8/143 (J Preedy 64* and A Hawkins 48) lost to Mt Colah 5/152
U11
WPHC Gold 7/163 (C Bell 50*, T Mistry 33, A Ramakrishnan 3/20) defeated WPHC Green 151 (A Ramakrishnan 73)
Best ever
This is the first time that we have had 7 teams in the 6 Age Division Finals. The previous best was 4 in both 2005/06 and 2006/07. To achieve this with a ‘Participation over results’ policy is simply outstanding. To win 3 and lose 3 is a fantastic result. The scores are amazing – losing the U16s by 1 run, U13’s by 1 wicket and U12’s by 9 runs says it all. Well done to every team who even made it this far.
Presentation Day
• When: Sunday 30th March
• Where: Campbell Park or Oakhill Drive Public School at 1.00 pm if it is wet
• Time: 11.00 am. This should go for about an hour maximum.
Emerging Blues trialists
Congratulations to the following Juniors who have been rewarded for performances and potential to attend selection trials for the Emerging Blues 2008-09:
U15
• Alex Rashleigh (1 of 3 nominees from our Association for the 1st round - 3 others who are carryovers from last year's EB's)
U14
• Sid Sethi
• Daniel Anderson (2 of 5 Association nominees with 3 carryovers)
U13
• Santosh Krishnan (1 of 5 Association nominees)
Participation over results
Our Juniors have a proud record of not stacking teams and giving every-one a ‘fair-go’. This note from our U11 Gold Premiers says it all:
“Hi Ross
I was just about to delete this email, but thought that you & the junior club committee might like to know that the Clubs policy of participation above results is not just a platitude, as can be gleaned from some of the parents comments from the victorious WPHCCC U11 Gold team below.”
A note from another parent:
“.....Yes to confirm what everyone else has said. The stats of the match ...showed it all that no one was over-bowled, everyone had equal opportunity to bat and everyone had at least 2 overs (against a quality batsman who must have been the best we have encountered).
We won because every boy has been taught to play cricket and has been given the opportunity to do so. A Champion team.”
To participate in all Age Division Finals in this context is an amazing achievement.
Girl’s season wrap-up
Congratulations to our Girls. After a season of many wash-outs and the occasional ‘no-game’ the season is now finished and we look forward to 2007-08.
A special congratulations to Felicity Trinh who was selected as Vice Captain of the Northern Sydney U13 team that played in the Mollie Dive Shield in Jan 08 (Castle Hills). Last week, Felicity received her winning pendant for the Mollie Dive shield plus she won the NSW District Cricket Association Mollie Dive Shield - 2008 Bowling Award.
Congratulations on this great achievement Felicity.
Kanga
Kanga has now finished for the year with the Presentation happening at Edward Bennett Oval on Saturday 8th March. We have 51 ‘Graduates’ who now move on to U9’s next season. Yet another fabulous where even the wet weather didn’t dampen spirits too much.

A2 131 Ben Frawley 37, Scott Henderson 33) lost to Kenthurst 8/229 (Matt Jobson 4 wickets)

C2 105(Chris Williamson 30, Isaac Malamel 24) lost to CHRSL 8/305 (Steve Baker 4/38, Chris Williams on 3/38
Seniors Presentation Night – one for the diaries
While yet to be confirmed, it is likely that our Seniors Presentation Night is likely to be:
• When: Friday 9th May
• Where: Castle Hill RSL
• Time: probably around 7.30 pm
• Cost to be confirmed
This is always a fabulous night. More info will follow and we will need confirmation of attendance closer to the night. Stay tuned.
Broken Hat-trick
While we have no records on this one it would have to be up there as a Club first.
In the C2 Semi Final against Normanhurst, Chris Williamson closed off the opposition innings with 2 wickets in consecutive balls. The lack of a second innings denied him the chance to officially have a shot at his hat trick. Not to be at all worried by this, Chris came out in the Final to take a wicket with his first ball of the innings, thus giving him 3 wickets in his last 3 balls and in a Final to cap it off.

Club News: Finals - Day 2 (16th March 2008)
Just an update on the scores from Saturday. There will be a further update with a fuller report on Monday.
Seniors
Day one of the Grand Final happened on Saturday – the results follow:
A2 131 lost to Kenthurst 8/229
Day 1
Batting first we didn’t take advantage of a good Parklands Oval batting wicket to set a good score. Ben Frawley with 37 and Scott Henderson 33, were the key after the early loss of wickets but needed more support. With a strong bowling attack our objective we will be going into Day 2 with a plan to get quick wickets and put them under pressure.
Day 2
Kenthurst batted on and with a lead of just on 100 the mercy rule was called and the game finished early. Matt Jobson did really well with 4 wickets with the remaining spread between Steve Quanborough, Ben Frawley and Scott Henderson who took one each. All up a disappointing outcome to finish off what was an outstanding season. Well done fella’s.
Colts 275 defeated Berowra 124
Day 1
The lads did what they needed to do on a beautiful batting track at Storey Park. Sujith Dissanayake with 98 was superb and got fabulous backup from Tim Scoular with 53 and Nick Bennett 39. We got the runs quickly and then had 21 overs at Berowra who are in trouble. Dylan Brogan has 2/13 and the killer blow came 2 run-outs – one by Mark Bennett with a direct hit from side on. We are well on the way to winning our first Colts premiership.
Day 2
As expected, we continued on from the 5/49 overnight and had a comprehensive to win to takeout our first Colts Premiership. The guys just steamrolled Berowra. Dylan Brogan was outstanding, taking 5/17 from 14 overs and got great support from Nick Bennett and Tim Scoular with 1 wicket each plus the 2 run-outs from Saturday. The fantastic win against a good side.
C1 White 141 and 90 lost outright (after leading first innings) Hornsby 123 and 146
Day 1
This was always going to be a tough game for both sides on a difficult wicket that had a lot of late sideways movement. We bowled and fielded brilliantly but still had a challenging run chase. Geoff Richards with 3/18, John Steel 3/14, Andrew Watt 2/29 and Ben McNamara 2/49 were outstanding. Our turn to bat against a strong attack. At 6/45 we were struggling. Enter Michael McDowell (33) and Geoff Richards (45*) and we got an invaluable lead.
Day 2
This was always going to be a tough day 2 on a substandard wicket with 2 strong bowling sides. Continuing on at 2/31 they got away early but superb bowling by Geoff Richards (3/40) and Ben McNamara (5/72) restricted them to a gettable 129 target. Geoff was unbelievable with 10 overs of bowling despite a strained thigh muscle and bowling on a shortened run. Added to this John Steel who bowled with a hamstring strain and it was an amazing effort to restrict them. Batting a second time we lost early wickets again to be 3/10 but enter Michael McDowell 30 and Tony Hadley 28 and at 3/60 we were well in it. Then some good bowling with the odd rogue ball and we lost key wickets. All up, a close game (29 run loss over 4 innings) but a fantastic season by the boys who took out the Minor Premiership.
C2 105 lost to CHRSL 8/305
Day 1
Playing at Greenway Park we are chasing what is gettable score. Teams need to score between 250 and 300+ to post a competitive score on this deck. This track offers the bowlers no assistance and with a fast outfield this score is not as daunting as it looks. Not surprisingly the quicks did little damage. Steve Steve Baker (4/38), Chris Williamson (3/40) and Jacques Visser (1/30) all bowling spin took the wickets. There is a lot of batting left but this is the place to do it.
Day 2
While the scores indicate that this match was all over easily, the reality was different. We fought hard and got to within 90 minutes of saving it. Chris Williamson was superb – batting for just on 4.5 hours to eventually be given out caught off the pad. Isaac Malamel was also very good with his 24. All up, the C2’s had another good year, winning the minor premiership but going down in the Final. Bad luck but a fabulous season overall.
Club News: Finals - Day 1 (15th March 2008)
An update on the Seniors scores from Saturday follows. Day 2 of the Finals are played on Sunday and ther will be a further update with a fuller report on Monday.
A2 131 Vs Kenthurst 4/104 – batting first we didn’t take advantage of a good Parklands Oval batting wicket to set a good score. Ben Frawley with 37 and Scott Henderson 33, were the key after the early loss of wickets but needed more support. With a strong bowling attack our objective we will be going into Day 2 with a plan to get quick wickets and put them under pressure.
Colts 275 Vs Berowra 5/49 – the lads did what they needed to do on a beautiful batting track at Storey Park. Sujith Dissanayake with 98 was superb and got fabulous backup from Tim Scoular with 53 and Nick Bennett 39. We got the runs quickly and then had 21 overs at Berowra who are in trouble. C1 White 141 defeated Hornsby 123 and 2/30 – this was always going to be a tough game for both sides on a difficult under-prepared wicket that had a lot of late sideways movement. This game will be played out over 4 innings with the major risk for us being the leg injuries to Geoff Richards and john Steel – 2 of our 4 quicks.
C2 1/16 Vs CHRSL 300 – playing at Greenway Park we are chasing what is gettable score. Teams need to score between 250 and 300+ to post a competitive score on this deck. This track offers the bowlers no assistance and with a fast outfield this score is not as daunting as it looks. Not surprisingly the quicks did little damage. Junior boys wrap-up
What a tremendous achievement. Our Club has a policy of ‘Participation over results’ so that everyone gets a fair-go teams are Teams not graded. The Finals were played on Sunday 10th March and results are to hand.
U16
WPHC Blue (3rd) 63 lost to Upper Hills (1st) 64 (P Bhatia 7/17 off 10 overts).
Played on turf this was an absolute thriller with our boys going down by 1 run.
U15
WPHC Blue (1st) 2/130 (K Godfrey 65 and Michael Richards 42) defeated Upper Hills (3rd) 128.
A convincing victory by this talented side.
U14
WPHC White (1st) 8/147 (Sid Shanker 43, Darshan Pandya 30) defeated Castle-Hill RSL (3rd) 127 (B Jack 4/22).
Another thriller that needed us bowl and bat well to defend a sub par score and we did it against a very strong Castle Hill side.
U13
WPHC Gold 107 (Tom Lees 38, Arbhi 26) lost to Berowra 9/108.
Another nail biter that went down to the 53rd over with a 6 run last week partnership. This is the first loss to this talented team who were after their 3rd successive Final win. All year the Gold’s have had to defend low scores with brilliant fielding and bowling and this was no different but we just missed out.
U12
WPHC Red 8/143 (J Preedy 64* and A Hawkins 48) lost to Mt Colah 5/152
Yet another nail biter coming back from 3/20 to almost achieve victory chasing a good score. A fantastic effort fellas to almost get there.
U11
WPHC Gold 7/163 (C Bell 50*, T Mistry 33, A Ramakrishnan 3/20) defeated WPHC Green 151 (A Ramakrishnan 73)
Fabulous cricket with the Golds, remaining undefeated for the season, sent in to bat and setting a competitive target with the Greens falling short of victory by just 13 runs having been bowled out with only 3 overs remaining.
Best ever
This is the first time that we have had 7 teams in the 6 Age Division Finals. The previous best was 4 in both 2005/06 and 2006/07.
Club Championship
We don’t yet have the final Club Championship standings but it is likely that we have retained this Trophy. If this is correct is will be the 5th time since 2002-03 – only missing out last season.
Presentation Day
· When: Sunday 30th March
· Where: Campbell Park or Oakhill Drive Public School at 1.00 pm if it is wet
· Time: 11.00 am. This should go for about an hour maximum.
Kanga
Kanga has now finished for the year with the Presentation happening at Edward Bennett Oval on Saturday 8th March. We have 51 ‘Graduates’ who now move on to U9’s next season. Yet another fabulous where even the wet weather didn’t dampen spirits too much.
Seniors
Day one of the Semi Finals and the results follow – details are:
A2 (3rd) 86 and 5/32 defeated outright ARL (2nd) 57 and 57 – somehow they managed to get on to a Turramurra Oval on what Steve Quanborough referred to as a ‘tough deck’. What a game. ARL resumed at 3/23 (effectively 3 for minus 6) but a badly rain affected pitch. Any chase was going to be difficult. In the bowling, Matt Jobson was terrific taking 5/34 with Brad Hingle 2/4 and Scott Henderson 2/17. How about these for match bowling performances – Matt Jobson (8/54) and Scott Henderson (6/36)! Our turn to bat needing 29 to win but on a landmine. After a great start (0/20) we finished at 5/32 to get over the line. A fantastic effort using the sub-standard conditions on both days better than ARL although we did get first use through a good toss win.
Colts (1st) drew with Vs Hornsby (4th) – after rain got under the covers at Storey Park there was no play either day so we go through to the final as Minor Premier.
C1 White 8/249 (1st) defeated WPHC C1 Red 7/242 dec – this was always going to be a tight game and this is the way it turned out. After losing 2 quick wickets to be 3/23 Tony Hadley (80) and Sahil Khana (47) were simply brilliant. They put on 121 and batted well after the Tea break providing a very good platform for the strong White’s batting order. At 5/225 chasing 242 the game was all but over but...no one told the Red’s. They fought back hard taking 3/12 to take this game to the down wire. In the end the White’s got up with a strong order and on a deck that offered no help to the bowlers – either week. For the White’s, Tony Hadley was superb with his 80, Sahil has evolved into one of the most difficult openers to get out in the Comp. Added to this was a return to form by Michael McDowell with 38 and things are looking good for the Final. The Red’s were equally impressive with Mark Bell 3/24 outstanding. Congratulations to both captain’s – john Mitchell and Geoff Starr – both class acts who made sure the game (between 2 teams from the same Club) was played in the right spirit.
C2 (1st) 9/162 defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee (4th) 143 – another amazing win. Resuming at 5/55 it was going to be tough. Making it even more difficult was the loss of gun bat, Steve Baker 2nd ball of the day (probably not a good idea to play a sweep shot to a ball on middle stump) to leave us 6/55 and in trouble. Enter Isaac Malamel who played the innings on the season with 52 – under pressure. With Dave Gane (19) they got us within striking distance. We eventually passed Normo with 2 byes and 8 down – it was this close. This is now the 2nd time this Team has got out of jail with someone doing something special – the sign of a very good Team with great character. Well done boys.
Last premierships
A2 – last won 2006/07 so defending the crown
Colts – first appearance in a Final
C1 – 2003/04 under Dale Van den Boogaard
C2 – 2004/05 under Craig Willmott
Presentation Night – one for the diaries
While yet to be confirmed, it is likely that our Seniors Presentation Night is likely to be:
• When: Friday 9th May
• Where: Castle Hill RSL
• Time: probably around 7.30 pm
• Cost to be confirmed
This is always a fabulous night. More info will follow and we will need confirmation of attendance closer to the night. Stay tuned.
Great comments
Chris Williamson
Chris (C2) is beginning to make a name for himself – he is at it again. While Isaac Malamel winning a tough game he commented that it was good to see “Isaac standing up for us today” the reply “how else is he going to bat” – not bad when you think about it.
Andrew Fiedler (C1)
Andrew is one of the best bats in the C1 Comp. Before going out to bat he had a hit in the nets. Unfortunately he got out LBW not playing a shot to a straight ball when on 1 run. A comment from John Mitchell was that he just needs to be reminded “that the bat is taken out for a reason”.
Ross A
When you bag people you might as well bag yourself. Two great comments; Two balls before Tony Hadley was caught brilliantly by Geoff Starr for 80 – “Tony has never scored a ton before” – he still hasn’t. A follow-up about Nathan Fathers “Nathan is probably the most technically correct bat in the Team” – next ball he was bowled middle stump. After that shot Andrew Fiedler rated him in the top 10 for the team for technique.
Club Championship

Seniors
Day one of the Semi Finals and the results follow – details are:
A2 (3rd) 86 defeated ARL (2nd) 57 and 3/23 – an amazing game that probably started 60 minutes too early on a wet Turramurra Oval. We won the toss which was an important start. Scott Henderson was almost unplayable taking 4/26 and got great support from Matt Jobson 3/20 and Brad Hingle with 2/13 at one stage was on a hat-trick. Our turn to bat on a still difficult track and the lead of 29 is priceless. Ronan Barrett with 21 and Ben Frawley 19 were brilliant. ARL’s turn to bat a second time and Bard Hingle did it again with 2 wickets and being on another hat-trick. At the close ARL are effectively 3 for minus 6. Twenty three wickets for 166 runs in one day says it all. Brilliant effort fellas now to close it off.
Colts (1st) Vs Hornsby (4th) – no play today due to a ground closure. The lads play next week at 11.00 am at Storey Park in a 2-day game played over 1 day.
C1 White 1/23 (1st) Vs WPHC C1 Red 7/242 – always a difficult to game against our own but it was good game played in very good spirit but wthout the usual Semi Final intensity. Batting first, the Reds batted very well. Tim Starr (one of our U16 stars) was superb getting his highest score in Seniors with 92 and was very well supported by Mark Bell with 52. At one stage the Reds were 4/210 but the Whites struck back after the break. Ben McNamara with 3/60, Geoff Richards 2/40, John Steel 1/35 and Andrew Watt 1/29 were very good on a Greenway Park batting track that offers nothing to the bowlers and has a very fast outfield. There is a lot of cricket in this game with the Whites strong batting being bolstered by Tony Hadley’s week 2 return and the Red’s fabulous fielding and enthusiasm. There is a lot of cricket left in this game for both sides. One of those games that from a Club perspective we can't lose.
C2 (1st) 5/55 Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee (4th) 143 – after putting Normo into bat we went through them for 143 with wickets being shared amongst the bowlers. Our innings did not get off to a good start with the score on 4/20 at one stage finishing up at 5/55 but with Steve Baker not out on 25 at the end of play. Still a lot of work to do but with Steve Baker still there and a good lower order we are a big chance.

Club News: Round 14, Day 2 (23rd February 2008)
Well done Lisa
We have to start with an acknowledgement of Lisa Sthalekar (Vice Captain of the Australian Women’s Team). Playing in the Women’s Test Match at Bowral Oval during the week Lisa scored 98 to single handed give Australia a chance of beating England. She then came out and bowled and in the Words of Cricinfo compared the quality of her bowling to Shane Warne. For those who don’t know, Lisa is a former WPHC Junior who played U10s to U16s with distinction.

Seniors
Day 2 of the last round:
A1 (3rd) 127 and 3/145 lost to ARL (4th) 8/212 – a loss but a fantastic effort to finish off the season. At one stage we had them 8 down before they passed us. Added to this was a call that could have had them 7 down with 50 to get but that is life. After they passed us everyone got a bowl with Michael Banner and Troy Newman both getting a wicket - their first in A1. What about Smokey Dawson with 5 wickets yet again. In the 2nd innings we showed what might have been with Peter Whitehead slamming a classy 81 including 50 off 23 balls. We also were 0/41 off 2 overs! While missing out on the Semi’s most judges consider that if we had made it we would have gone all the way. Anyway, the team showed great courage and fight this year.
A2 (3rd) 9/249 defeated Galston Glenorie (4th) 105 – a thumping win that saw us comfortably in 3rd spot. Ronan Barrett continued on and finished with 136 – a great effort. In the bowling Steve Quanborough raised the bar with 4/12 from 5.1 overs with very good support from Matt Jobbson 3/14 (8 overs) and Scott Henderson 2/26 from 16 overs straight. Basically we smashed them and now play ARL at Turramurra next week in the Semi Finals for a chance to defend their A2 Premiership. Super stuff guys.
Colts (1st) 7/148 dec defeated Castle Hill RSL (6th) 126 and 7/130 A perferct hit-out before the Semi Finals. Not a bad days play to get the first innings points although the batsmen did make hard work of getting the small total on a pitch starting to play some tricks. Matt Scoular and Nick Bennett were the best of the batsmen getting 42 and 41 respectively. The seven wickets to fall in the Castle Hill innings were shared amongst 5 bowlers with Taylor Pator being the best with 3 for 17. Well done fella's.
B1 Blue (5th) 87 lost to Normanhurst-Warrawee (3rd) 5/266 – scores to come
B1 Red (6th) 80 and 102 lost outright to Glenhaven (=1st) 6/213 dec – one of those days. Going into this game we couldn’t make the Finals so it was more about having a final hit-out for the winter break. Andrew Mills was the star today with 35. At least the beers tasted good back at the Club.
C1 White (1st) 102 and 6/225 lost to Hornsby (2nd) 9/124 – let’s forget about week 1. In week 2 we came back into our own with a good hit-out before the Semi’s. Batting against a good bowling attack we had a dream start with an opening of 85 that basically ensured the Minor Premiership. Ross A (46) and Sahil Khanna (34) did a very good job upfront. After that start, most of the blokes had a solid hit-out – Tony Hadley 38, Andrew Fiedler 32, Michael McDowell 23 and Nathan Fathers a very impressive 18*. While losing we got a lot out of this game going into the big ones.
C1 Red (5th) 4 dec/109 and 7/85 defeated Castle Hill White (8th) 69 and 167 – a win but this should have been a comfortable outright with Castle Hill 5/14 overnight but some unusual umpiring decisions didn’t help our cause. Best bowlers for us were Tim Starr with 3/38 and 2 wickets each to George Petridis (2/23), Geoff Starr (2/26) and Michael Hobern (2/0). The chase started well, with the score flying along to 0/50 off just 8 overs thanks mainly to Tim Starr (41), before quick wickets put an end to any thoughts of running the total down, losing our 7 wickets in the space of just 35 runs, and ending on a disappointing 7/85. Results in other games probably went our way so we should sneak into gthe Semi Finals and once there anything can happen.
C2 (3rd) 174 defeated outright Redfield (6th) 95 and 74 – a thumping win to most likely put us into the 1st place. Ashraf Ahmed was brilliant with 72 and got good support from David Gane 33. With a 79 run lead we dismissed Redfield for 74 with outstanding bowling from Nic. Patel 4/23, Steve. Baker 3/20 and Jaskaran Singh 3/8. We held every catch that came our way in 2 innings, and it was a wonderful all round effort from the team to record the outright win. A well deserved win to finish off a very satisfying season for our team. Bring on the Semi’s.
D2 (7th) 122 and 9/98 lost to Kenthurst (5th) 226 – the best of our batting in the first innings were Bruce Caldwell (26) and Claudio Van Blerk (49), the latter a great effort, Claudio's personal best and our team's top individual score for the season. Unfortunately with their departure our tailenders were unable to get us past the follow-on target of 151. Our second innings saw Daniel Anderson (24) come into his own with a disciplined innings, working the gaps in the field and running well between wickets to keep the ones and two’s ticking over. He was ably supported at the other end by Brannavan Ramachandran (14) and Jonathan Van Blerk (21), whose contributions helped to stave off an outright defeat by the margin of one wicket.
So we end this season as wooden-spooners, but as a team who, beyond the points table, have enjoyed much and gained much from our experience this season, learning from each other and gaining strength from adversity; a team who have been great ambassadors for WPHC and a team of whom the club can be truly proud for the undaunted spirit, camaraderie and good sportsmanship we have displayed over the past six months: well done fellas!
Photo update
Have a browse of the Photo Gallery to see the latest photo’s – Matt Scoular after scoring a record 34 off an over. Later in the week we will have our amazing D2’s on the website who kept backing up with enthusiasm week after week this season.
With mates like this
After swapping around the ‘keepers, Jacques Visser took the gloves and immediately made an impact in dropping a catch. Trying to support the bowler he tried to recover the situation and called out “you’ll get him next ball”. The cutting response came back “we should have had him last ball as well” Not to worry Jacques, as a ‘keeper you make a great bowler.
On the bog
Goy to hand it to Andrew Fiedler (C1 run machine). Doing what he does well, he went ‘to the bog” just before going out to bat. Unfortunately the number 3 got out 1st ball. By the time Andrew finished the job, the player was out and already had unpadded. The sequel continues.
How to play a hat-trick
Story continued. After eventually going out to bat Andrew had to face the hat-trick ball – his first in many years of cricket. With fielder’s crowded around the bat, he smashed the short ball to the boundary with a fabulous pull shot. Must be something about getting a load off your mind before going out to bat.
Semi Finals
Congratulations to our Semi Finalists. Colts are still to play and the C1 make-up still in the balance but it looks like we can pencil in the following matches:
Colts (1st) Vs Kenthurst (4th) @ Storey Park
A2 (3rd) Vs ? @ Parklands Oval
C1 WPHC White (1st) Vs WPHC Red (4th) @ Greenway Oval
C2 (1st) Vs ? @ Les Shore 1.

Kanga
Kanga got on for the first time since school returned due to a series of wet weekends. The Presentation Day has now been set. Details are:
• When: Saturday 8th March
• Where: Edward Bennett Oval
• Time: 10.00 am. The kids have a parents/Kanga game which is always fun and the presentations, including graduation certificates are handed out.
Seniors
We got on for a change – details are:
A1 (3rd) 130 Vs ARL (4th) 2/25 – playing on a slow track at Parklands, shot making was a challenge. Michael Banner produced his best knock of the season with 40 and was well supported by Smokey Dawson with 28. ARL are not known as a chasing team so with similar conditions this is game on. If there is any rain this week, runs on the board will be like gold.
A2 (3rd) 9/230 Vs Galston Glenorie (4th) – Ronan Barrett, fresh from his 6 fours in an over this time hammered 127* in a superb knock. With good support from James Fiedler (32) they have all but batted us into a winning position. The ton from Ronan who scored our 331st century – great stuff mate.
Colts 1/44 (1st) Vs Castle Hill RSL 126 (6th) – we won the toss and put Castle Hill into bat. They struggled to get the runs in 62.5 overs. Taylor Paton was the best with 3 for 17. In the 16 overs we had to bat we are comfortably placed to consolidate 1st place. Well done fellas.
B1 Blue (5th) 87 lost to Normanhurst-Warrawee (3rd) 5/266 – Andrew Joyce played a loan hand with 31. With so many players unavailable through injury and work/overseas commitments it was an achievement hanging on this long. While a disappointing way to miss out on the Semi’s after being a pace setter for so long the overall season has been a good one.
B1 Red (6th) 80 lost to Glenhaven (=1st) 4/85 – Peter Taylor made his mark with a good 33 but didn’t get the support he needed to post a competitive score. That said, the lads put in against the top side and have pushed them all the way. With the last weekend coming up next Saturday looks like one to enjoy.
C1 White (1st) 102 lost to Hornsby (2nd) 9/124 – an amazing game where our strong batting line was humbled against some very good fast/swing bowling. A number of our top order were late (all reasonable reasons) that caused the order to be changed – this didn’t help our cause. At one stage we were 5/9 but recovered thanks to Geoff Richards with 42* and good support from Michael Richards 16 and Michael Sainsbury 15. Our turn to bowl and we showed why we are coming first. At one stage we had them 8/81 and teetering but they just got over the line. Geoff Richards (again) was dynamic with 5/23 from 12 overs and got fabulous support from Ben McNamara 2/46 (15 with 14 straight) and Andrew Watt 2/36). We will play this game out as a first innings loss will still see us hold 1st place.
C1 Red (5th) 4 dec/109 defeated Castle Hill White (8th) 69 and 5/14 – Wow! What a performance. In a game we had to win the guys turned it on big time. Bowling first we won the toss and bowled first – a stroke a stroke of genius. James McBrien (5/13) and George Petridis (2/10) ripped through the top order to have them 7/20 at one stage. In reply, father-son combination Geoff (49) & Tim Starr (41) putting on a 67 run partnership for the 2nd wicket. After losing a further 3 wickets in search of quick runs, we declared on 4/109. Returning to bowl for the second time today, we had only 8 overs to face they are down and out – still 26 runs behind. Ten points from this match will see us in the top 4.
C2 (3rd) 7/156 defeated Redfield (6th) 95 – the lads have come back with a bang. Guaranteed a spot in the top 4 this match is about position in the top 4. Our bowlers were all over Redfield with Ashraf 4/24 and Steve Baker 3/12. After a brief wobble at 4/23 we bounced back thanks to Asraf starring this time with the bat (55*) and Dave Gane with 33. With only 3 points separating the top 3 teams, 10 points here would almost guarantee the minor premiership.
D2 (7th) 2/19 Vs Kenthurst (5th) 226 – a long day of hard graft against a fired up and determined Kenthurst side. Our two 12 year olds did a splendid job in difficult circumstances, Daniel Anderson (DA) by far the best of our bowlers, taking 4/22 from 7 overs, Sid Sethi less fortunate, taking 1/10 from 6 overs but having more easy catches put down than I care to remember. Our other successful bowlers were Roger Friend (2 /34), Claudio Van Blerk (2/35) and Shankar Ravi (1/27). The truth is we had a woeful day in the field and payed for it dearly. This being said, both of our young players put in a great effort in the field, showed fine fielding skills and were a real source of inspiration to us on such an otherwise dispiriting day. DA, by the way, broke a 99 run partnership, sending both of its members, Max Crippa (45) and Ken Garvan (66) back to the pavilion in the space of two overs.
Commitment
We have many blokes who back up week after week, come back early from holidays and even the odd player who flies back from China and sometimes even WA to play. One of our quiet achievers in this space is Peter Westerberg from D2. Peter came to us in 2002-03 and has not missed a game since – 6 years. Added to this, whenever his team has missed out on the Finals he is always putting up his hand to Score in other games. Well done Peter – your commitment is very much appreciated.
Nostradamus
Chris Williamson (C2) is rapidly gaining a reputation as a tactical genius. This comment from Steve Baker about Ashraf Ahmed:
“Towards the end of his spell, Ashraf was starting to tire. At this point, after 5 balls that were no real threat, Chris Williamson turned to Glenn and me in slips and commented-Ash is the kind of bower who will bowl 5 balls that aren't that brilliant and then produce a gem. Next ball, Ash promptly produced a stunner-a delivery that pitched well outside off stump, decking back through the gap to clean up the top of off stump-it was a ball that would get most batsmen out. I think would be one of the best calls/predictions of how someone can bowl I have ever heard off.”
Semi Finalists
Even though we still have this round to go we can now congratulate the following teams who have made it through to the Semi Finals:
• A2 – will finish 3rd
• Colts – will finish 1st or 2nd
• C1 White – 1st
• C2 – will come 1st, 2nd or 3rd
Good luck to our Teams who have a real chance of making it:
• A1 – currently 4th and can finish 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th
• B1 Blue – currently 5th but just 3 points off the pace
• C1 Red – 5th and 2 points off.
For our B1 Red and D2 sides who can’t make it – go out and enjoy the last 2 weekends of cricket fella’s.

Southern Stars game
On Sunday at 11.00 am Channel 9 will have a 60 minute highlights package of the Twenty/20 game between the Women’s game between Australia and England played at the MCG during the week.
For those who have never seen a Women's game it will be a good insight into the game. When you are watching it keep a look out for Lisa Sthalekar who is a West Penno Junior who played from U10 to U16 and regularly comes back to help us out. While the Women in most cases lack the sheer power of the men look at their batting and bowling techniques – generally superior to the men.

• U15s – Blue (1st), Red (8th)

Kanga
A few years ago our Kanga’s were used in a Milo advertisement. Our photo gallery has a record of this fabulous day. We have now been asked to support an updated ad that will be produced in early 2008 so looks like some of our Kanga’s will get their moment of stardom. Stay tuned.
Seniors
Groundhog day – another wet one and all games were washed out. With 1 game to thought you might be interested in next week’s rounds and how each team stands. Here goes:
A1 (4th on quotient) Vs ARL (3rd on quotient) – a huge game coming up with a loss probably putting us out of the Semi’s and a win in either 2nd, 3rd or 4th. Probably our biggest game of the season.
A2 (3rd) Vs Galston Glenorie (4th) – we are locked in to 3rd spot irrespective of what happens here but it is always good to go into Semi’s on winning form.
Colts (1st) Vs Castle Hill RSL 6th) – the worst we can finish is 2nd but with a game against last placed CHRSL we look a solid chance to take out the Minor Premiership.
B1 Blue (5th) Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee (=1st quotient) – another huge game. A win will jump us into 3rd or 4th position over Normo. A loss will see us finish 5th. Like A1 – probably the biggest game of the season.
B1 Red (6th) Vs Glenhaven (=1st) – while no chance of making the top 4 it would be good to knock of one of the favourites for the Finals.
C1 White (1st) Vs Hornsby (2nd) – 1 Vs 2 with a 9 point lead going into this game we will finish Minor Premier. A good opportunity to go into the semi’s with winning form.
C1 Red (5th) Vs Castle Hill White (8th) – another blockbuster game against CHRSL who have only won 3 games this year – but anything can happen. Unfortunately Ku-Ring-gai Chase were the onlt Team to get on and won in the process. We need to win (an outright would be great) and rely on Thornleigh being beaten by Chase - a real possbilty. An interesting weekend coming up.
C2 (3rd) Vs Redfield (8th) – while guaranteed a spot in the Semi’s only 1 point separates the top three teams. A loss will assign us to 3rd spot and a win possibly 1st or 2nd.
D2 (7th) Vs Kenthurst (5th) – we are playing for fun and pride in this game. Kenthurst are just out of the top 4 – it would be super to knock them off and finish the season with a win.
An Umpires story
Barry McDonald, our esteemed Club Chairman and Umpire, relayed some funny instances that happened in games he was Umpiring over the last few weeks.
Bowl straight
As background, Barry is overcoming a strained side which makes raising his arms painful.
In an A1 game a couple of weeks ago he asked both Teams to go easy on the need for decisions. You guessed what happened. In the first over there were 2 wides and a 6 followed by a decision next over. It had to happen.
Watchout
The 2nd story also happened in a recent game. Barry is well known for quiet authority, being involved in the game but leaving it to the players – the invisible man which makes him so good. But...something happened in a recent game. The opening bowler bowled a full-toss. Barry did what any umpire would do and yelled out “Watch Out” – just the thing a batsman wanted when he had a life saving decision to make. Fortunately the player is still with us.
Above and beyond
D2 won their first game of the season in emphatic style last match but apart from that it has been a struggle to get over the line. Despite this they are probably one of the most enthusiastic teams we have. In the words of Peter Westerberg:
"Just to let you know that we were washed out, as you might expect (I have never seen a team so intent on playing despite the conditions as these guys - nothing short of a deluge of biblical proportions would persuade them to give it up!)”.
Great stuff fella’s.
Association news
The Association had a Feedback night during the week from Captain’s to start planning for next season. A special thanks to Simon Smyth who represented us. The main matters coming out of the meeting were:
Colts
• Will be retained as a Turf Competition
• The weekend prior to the HSC English Exam will be excluded. It is also possible that an extra week will be scheduled “Schoolies”
Other Grades
• On the weekends that Colts matches are excluded, A Reserve matches will be played on available Turf grounds
• Castle Hill is progressing toward establishing a turf ground. The Association is also looking at the feasibility of using Private School turf grounds for Sunday matches – as back up during rep season
• Due to the number of matches cancelled due to wet weather, especially applicable to the turf grades, the Afternoon Committee is drafting a revised policy for player eligibility for Finals
• Starting times in the holiday season will be reviewed as 12 noon starts can interfere with family commitments for the players. Also the 35 over one day game duration will be reviewed prior to the commencement of next season
• Consideration given to a 9 team competition for next season with the “bye” team providing umpires for the remaining four matches
The big games
We look like having definitely 4 teams (A2, Colts, C1 White and C2) in the Semi’s. There is a real chance of 7 teams (A1, B1 Blue and C1 Red) going through if they win if a fantastic performance. Just keep in mind that if games are washed out the Team higher on the points table goes through to the Final. If this is washed out the higher placed team is the winner. So in the game next week apart from winning, do it by winning with the most runs and losing as few wickets as possible.

Tamworth trip
During the 1st week of January WPHC was invited to play in the T Cricket Carnival normally reserved for Representative teams from areas such as Tamworth/Quirindi, Coffs Harbour, Nambucca Heads and Gunnedah – all games played on turf. We were invited because of our size and to initially make up the numbers after a Team withdrawal. The Team did so well we are now likely to be invited back again. A brief report on the tour by Andrew Fiedler follows:
"Suffice to say, we played Tamworth, Coffs Harbour, Tamworth/Quirindi, Nambucca & Gunnedah. All proved a bit strong for us, but we were competitive in each game. We shared the batting and bowling around quite evenly, so didn't put any emphasis on winning (well, except in 1 game!!). A number of boys also took turns in captaining a side for the first time, so gained some really valuable experience. As a whole, it was a hugely beneficial experience, with the kids going on a tour for the first time & playing on good turf wickets. Everyone I spoke to afterwards said what a wonderful time they had and most were quite keen on doing it again. Hopefully this will be the forerunner of a long relationship our club will have with country cricket carnivals."
Check out the photo gallery for some fabulous photo’s form the Tour.
Congratulations
Well done to 3 WPH Juniors who were selected in the combined Sydney Green Shield Team (U16):
• Daniel Brain (representing Mosman - WPHC U16) – an ex-Kanga
• Harpreet Singh (Western Suburbs - WPHC U16)
• Gavin Taylor (Northern Districts - WPHC A1) – first reserve
Kanga
A few years ago our Kanga’s were used in a Milo advertisement. Our photo gallery has a record of this fabulous day. We have now been asked to support an updated ad that will be produced in early 2008 so looks like some of our Kanga’s will get their moment of stardom. Stay tuned.
Seniors
What we thought would be the 1st day of a 2-day game not to be for many teams who were rain affected. For those playing 1 day games matches start at 1.00 pm and go for 35 overs:
A1 Vs Hornsby – washed out and will play a 1-dayer next week.
A2 4/16 Vs Kenthurst 137 – after a bit of rain, we sent Kenthurst into bat. Really slow outfield, managed to get them all out for 137. Scott Henderson, Steve Quanborough and Ben Frawley all took 3 wickets each and bowled really well. With 16 overs or so to bat, we are 4/16, but it’s anyone’s game at this stage.
Colts Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee – washed out today.
B1 Blue Vs Mt Colah – no play – 1-dayer next weekend.
B1 Red Vs Mt Colah 0/10 – this game lasted only 30 minutes. Nothing spectacular in this game and will be played as a 1-dayer next week.
C1 White Vs C1 Red – no play.
C2 Vs Hornsby – no play
D2 128 Vs Galston Glenorie 2/74 – not a good toss to lose, Galston-Glenorie taking advantage of a very slow, wet outfield to restrict our scoring on this small ground, yet seeming able to score readily themselves on a ground they know well. Batting for WPHC, an in form Claudio Van Blerk (32) and Ben Pilipowski (30) were the best, with a gutsy two-and-a-half hour effort from Claudio who carried an injury onto the field. Injury and bad luck also deprived us of some of our best batting early in the innings, with Alok Pradhan retired, hurt and Roger Friend unlucky to be dismissed for a duck, our 128 a respectable score under the circumstances.
In reply Galston-Glenorie made it look all too easy, rocketing to 74 with the loss of just two wickets in the 13 overs we bowled to them before stumps, both wickets falling to Shankar Ravi, including yet another stumping bringing the Caldwell-Ravi stumping tally for the season thus far to 8. It looks like a pretty tough haul from here to steal an improbable victory from looming defeat, but, with the ball just 13 overs old, two of their best batsmen back in the pavilion and Brannavan Ramachandran back with us again next week, we are not about to concede this one yet!
Fees
A final reminder for those folks who have not yet paid their fees, our large Association bill is now due for payment. Your Captains will be approaching anyone with fees still outstanding. For Seniors these are $250 and Juniors $190. The early payment discount incentive of $20 has now passed. After this coming match priority for selection will be given to financial players. Thanks for your help.
Fast scoring – yet another record
Two weeks ago we reported on a record run scoring effort from Ronan Barrett (A2) by hitting 24 runs in an over with 6 successive 4’s. This has now been outdone! Last Sunday Matt Scoular (Colts) hit a Club record of 34 off an over – eight 4s (plus the 2 no balls)! Now this is special. The bowler bowled an eight ball over (2 no balls) and every ball was hit for a boundary. How about this for a record:
• It is the highest number of runs ever scored in a single over by a West Penno player in 62 years
• The previous record was 30 by Ian Paterson and Roger Friend in D1 in 2004
• Previous records (Ronan’s aside) were sprinkled with 6s but not this one.
Spare a thought for the bowler - a check of the iSport scorecard shows the figures of 1 over, no maidens 0/34! Might be a short bowling career.
This is an amazing achievement – the like of which we may never see again. Well done Matt.
Our most remarkable debut
An amazing biological event happened last Saturday (26th January) in the C1 White game against Pymble. Daniel Anderson (12 years of age) has the Association record for being the youngest player ever to play in this Association. On Saturday he made his debut as a Registered player when he played C1. Why is this special? He last played Seniors, 2 months before he was born (and prior to having a name) when his mother fielded 7 months pregnant in a B1 Semi Final – filling in for a player who was absent. His debut 12 years later now concludes this remarkable double debut! He also top scored for the match with 22.
There was also an unsavoury comment at this match 12 years ago. Daniels’ father who was bowling had a catch go to deep square leg where the very pregnant Denise was fielding. When a catch went up and she was waddling to the ball this individual yelled out “Dive”. The response to an incredulous Umpire was “I can always have another baby but this might be my last wicket”. Choice!
Don’t mention the war
Sorry Gav (Gavin Taylor (A1). A1 has a ‘fine’ system that whenever Gav’s name is mentioned on the website he is fined – we think a few blokes wan to their name listed instead. But...the young fella has done it again – being selected in the Combined Sydney Green Shield team squad. This is a fantastic achievement Gav – well done.

Tamworth trip
A combined WPHC U13 and U14 team was invited to participate in the Tamworth Cricket Carnival over the early New Year. This is a tremendous honour being invited into this major Carnival. The boys made such an impression they have been asked to come back again next season. We will get a write up and photo’s onto the website shortly so keep a watch out.
Kanga
A few years ago our Kanga’s were used in a Milo advertisement. Our photo gallery has a record of this fabulous day. We have now been asked to support an updated ad that will be produced in early 2008 so looks like some of our Kanga’s will get their moment of stardom. Stay tuned.
Seniors
A dry weekend and the last of our 1-day games. Results are:
A1 7/173 defeated CHRSL 108. A fabulous win against 1st placed Castle Hill. This was a clinical win that announced to everyone that the boys are genuine contenders for the Premiership – after struggling early in the season. Troy Newman, the quiet achiever, scored 47 with Adam Walter scoring 42 at the end of the innings. In the bowling, Simon Smyth took 3/5, Matt Dawson 2/12 (8 overs) and Peter Stott 2/24 (8). The boys are on a roll.
A2 7/125 defeated Kissing Point 122. In a tight competition the A2 boys just keep winning to consolidate 3rd place. There were no real stars with the bat – everyone contributed. Leigh Van den Broeke with 31 and Tim Leyshon 29 top scored. In the bowling though Tim Rae with 4/43, Mat Jobson 2/25 and Dylan Brogan 2/25 were the destroyers.
Colts 1/88 defeated Kenthurst 85 – a demolition of 4th placed Kenthurst by this richly talented side. Our leggie, Rohan Dixit starred with 4/13 (6 overs) but was supported by good allround bowling. Then the batting - we blew them off the park getting the runs in 10.1 overs. Matt (64*) and Tim Scoular had an opening partnership of 84 off 9 overs. Matt was in fire at one stage taking 32 off an over. This is a remarkable achievement and will be written up next week. The guys are in 1st place and on this form no one will get near them.
B1 Blue Vs St Ives – scores to come.
WPHC Red 5/175 lost to Normanhurst-Warrawee 7/176. What a close one that went down to the last ball. With 1 ball to go they needed 2 runs to win and got there with a snick through slips – almost the story of the season. In the batting, Nishane Pillay top scored with 44 with Andrew Mills 40 to give us 175 – a more than competitive score. James Mielnik took 2/30 in the bowling. The Reds will now miss the Finals but they will certainly make it tough on any side they play in the remaining 2 rounds.
C1 White 114 defeated Pymble 71. What an amazing game that shows why this team are clearout Competition leaders. After slumping to 7/41 on a slow Bannockburn against tight but non threatening bowling we battled to 114. Daniel Anderson (at 12 and playing his first seniors game) top scored for the match with a busy 22. Geoff Richards at number 11 then hit a fast 20 in a critical 30 run last wicket partnership. Enter the bowlers, supported by great fielding – John Mitchell 3/18, Ben McNamarra 3/25,Geoff Richards 2/6 (6 overs) and Kishore Rampersad 1/12 (8) were simply outstanding. This team does not give in and knew that any score over 80 was defendable with our attack – we did it.
C1 Red 8/132 lost to Thornleigh 6/134. After an amazing run up until Christmas the guys have had a few blips. After slumping to 6/59 of 23 overs Duncan Moore (42) set about salvaging the innings and managed to pull us along to a respectable target of 8/132. We started well reducing them to 4/46, however a number of dropped catches and missed chances saw them get away. Some more late wickets to Geoff Starr, who ended up with 3/12 off 8 overs, gave us a sniff of a chance, but it was all too little too late as they finished 6/134. Wickets were picked up by Geoff Starr with 3/12 (8 overs), Tim Starr 1/12 (8) and Chris Creais 1/24 did well.
C2 9/91 lost to CHRSL 3/92. Something unusual happened – we lost this game. Tight bowling by 2nd placed Castle Hill side restricted us to 91/9. Only Peter "dependable" Lees managed to trouble the scorers with a well played 40. Nobody else managed to get on top of the bowling, although Chris Williamson supported Peter through the majority of the innings. It was always going to be a big ask to defend the small total.1-Day'ers are clearly not the C2's favourite format – lets hope the return to real cricket spells a change in our fortunes.
D2 1/57 defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee 55. What a result! We won our 1st game of the season against 1st placed Normo who have only lost 2 games all season. In the bowling, we just kept getting wickets regularly. Shankar Ravi took 4/14 with Jon van Blerk chipping in with 3/16. We ended up doing it easily with Ben Pilipowski (24) and Roger Friend 20* all but getting us across the line. Added to this Roger Friend took his 100th career wicket. Brilliant effort all round fella’s.
Best combination
In D2, there are a couple of quiet achievers – Ravi Shankar (Leggie) and ‘keeper Bruce Caldwell have combined to take 7 stumpings so far. We don’t have any records on this one but it is an outstanding achievement.
‘I survived’
Got to hand it to Rowan Keating (B1). Rowan has just got back from extended holidays and is about to start playing again. No big deal about this but he spent 6 weeks touring such safe tourist havens as Jordan, Egypt, Alexandria, Libya and Tunisia. After going to these parts of the world facing up to the best fast bowling in a game of cricket will be child’s play. Congratulations on coming back in one piece (literally) Rowan.
From covers to crèche
Two of our talented Juniors (Daniel Anderson 12 and Michael Richards 14) were playing C1 on the weekend and helped bring the average age down. At one stage though, they were both fielding in the important positions of cover and cover point. The comment was made that we were renaming Covers to Crèche.
Tables turned
A couple of fantastic results on the weekend. A1, who were struggling at Christmas and in a fight for last place are now genuine contenders for the minor Premiership. Simon and the boys never lost faith and they have bounced back big time.
How about D2. The boys were looking down the barrel of a season without a win. They turned it around this week big time with a thumping win over 1st placed Castle Hill. All this with a team that backs up every week and enjoy playing. Fantastic fella’s.
Confidence
Got to hand it to Bran Ramachandran (D2). After being so used to batting reasonably quickly (he bats at 10) Bran was all padded up ready to go in. Problem was that we were only chasing 55 and we passed them 1 wicket down after a 50 run opening partnership. Good one Bran.
The Umpires verdict
Comment was made earlier that our A1 Grade win was so clinical it was like being in a hospital (not one in NSW). The umpire in the match (Ian Paterson) commented that when we were bowling he didn’t have to make a decision until 27 overs as all the others wee comprehensively out.
“It’s not fair”
A good one from C1. At one stage we had our ‘height challenged’ 12 year old and 14 year old batting together and doing it well. The Pymble first change bowler was about 190 cms and kept bouncing the boys. Problem was that he was being called for ‘no balls’ (bowling that is) as the ball was clearly going over their heads. The bowler then made a comment to the umpire that ‘it wasn’t fair’.
