Seniors Results
A1 Grade 3/186 and 3/75 defeated outright Castle Hill 134 and 125 a tremendous effort from the boys to take 10 points for the game our first outright in a long time. Smoke Dawson took 4 wickets to take his match tally to 10. Gav Taylor scored about 40 to add to his first innings century. Matts tally of 10 wickets is only the 45th time in our history that a bowler has taken 10 wickets or better in a match. This was Matts 250th wicket an amazing effort. Well done Matt.
A2 9/327 defeated Glenhaven 122 & 4/80 it was clear that Glenhaven were after the draw after some very slow batting, but managed to get them all out for a mere 122 off 52 overs. Figures went to Amir Marzouk with 3/19 and Rohan Dixit who bowled really well with 3/47 off 16, very unlucky at times. We decided to send them back in and they ended up 4/80. Top effort racking up 327 to begin with, and then everyone bowled well with a good result keeping us in 2nd place.
Colts Red Vs Hornsby Colts start up again on the 1st November after the HSC
Colts Blue Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee Colts start up again on the 1st November after the HSC
B1 255 defeated Glaston-Glenorie 174 and 7/85 a great all-round performance. Starting off the day at 0/80 we powered our way to 255 before declaring. Matt Thorndyke was again dominant falling just short of a century on 95. Matt's knock included 14 fours, his third fifty of the season so far. He was well supported by Tim Millington (39), Paul Tilley (34) and Rowan Keating (22). With runs on the board, we decided to have a crack at outright points. Rowan Keating (3/37) was again superb taking early wickets and GG looked to be in trouble. Scott Jobson used his variations to great effect and was all over the batsman taking 3/13. GG slumped to 6/43 and an outright was looking good. In the end GG just managed to hold on, only one batsman making double figures.
B2 158 lost to Hornsby 226 not the best of days for the boys after being 1 down over night with 56 on the board. Chasing what we saw as a very getable score, 5 of the top 6 got starts, with Alex Connell (34), Adam Walter (22), Geoff Richards (31), James McBrien (18 - in the process reaching his 1000 runs) and Nick Starr (19), but nobody was able to go on with the job. In the end it came down to our last pair of Lachlan McBrien and Ben McNamara to avoid the follow on, which they eventually did, but not before giving the blokes on the side a few minor heart attacks. If nothing else, we know that if we play to our best we can beat a team that dropped down a grade after having only lost once in B1
C1 7/177 lost to Berowra 7/179 with a few players out due to a Sunday fixture we lost a thriller. Batting first we struggled until Bryce Morley and John Steel came together to put on 70 for the 6th wicket in rapid time. In the bowling John Mitchell was the star with 4/28 but this was not enough to pull back their early run rate. Berowra just got across the line in the last over .
C2 3/316 defeated Normanhurst 307 after being set a target of 307 to win by Normo last week we started the day on 0/4. We lost our first wicket on 127 when Chris Williamson was caught behind for 15. His opening partner, "Night Watchman" Russell Ingram was on 93 at that stage. Russel reached his 100 in the 21st over of the day and went on to score on 211 in the 39th over before finally being caught.! Russel was supported by the other batsmen who watching enjoyed his prolific scoring from close in. Peter Heidegger made 39 not out with Narendar Kilkani and Chris Williamson also frustrating the Normo bowlers. We ended the day on 3/316 to record a satisfying win against Normo.
C3
White 7/259 dec defeated on first innings Berowra 77 we continued to dominate the Berowra side, but were unable to convert our 1st innings points from day 1 into an outright. Resuming at 3/159 we batted on for an hour or so. Chris Milojevic finished on 65, Riley Miedler made a classy 40 and Andrew Fiedler a brisk 30 not out to set up the declaration. We had Berowra in early trouble in the second innings, but they put up staunch resistance to see out the day at 5/129. Best with the ball were Taki Manolelis 2/27. Brett Hawkins, Luke Herzog & Riley Miedler were the other wicket takers. Nothing of interest to report other than almost being embroiled in a fight with a very angry & very large Berowra player who didn't like being dismissed.
Blue 9/143 drew with Normanhurst 296 welcome to C3 after being promoted from D1 during the week. Normanhurst continued batting and we wrapped them up in 7 overs. Rahul Saberherwal finished with 5/67. We had a big run chase got off to a slow start. Russell Smith was determined to stay in and saw a few batsmen come and go and was finally caught on 43. It was hard work trying to stay in the game and we were able to see the last ball bowled and finished with a hard earned 9/143.
D1 7/234 defeated Hornsby 231 a well deserved win with outstanding all round efforts in the field and with ball and bat. We were up against a Hornsby side that had bolstered their side some Colts players but the boys did extremely well and it all started with Perry Waldrons majestic diving catch in the slips and supported by Manod with 4/46 and Chris Grimas 3/44. Then with the bat Allan Raffels well composed 54 and David Behelevanas fighting 39, supported by Faisal Shamis 30 and Chris with 28, set us up nicely to record our first win for the season. Hopefully this is what we needed to get our season moving in the right direction.
D2 266 defeated St Ives 174 and 6/150 in the words of our Captain, Peter Westerberg: chasing the outright, produced one of the greatest days of cricket I have experienced in all my years at the club. The D2s gave it absolutely everything they had. As the afternoon wore on a parade of injured soldiers went off the field and came back on again just as soon as they could to support their team mates. When finally we came off the field at the end of the day there was not one of us who was not limping, totally spent and ready to collapse. As our keeper, Sam Thariani said, "cricket just doesn't get any better than this". I'm so proud of these boys.We may not be the strongest team in our grade but we're sure as hell the gutsiest, and I believe we'll go the distance.
Anatomy of a big score
Tons are a great achievement double tons are just so rare. On the weekend, Russell Ingram (C2) set all sorts of records. How about these for starters:
Russells ton was our 344th for the Club
His 200 is only the 4th in our history and the 3rd highest ever. The other big ones are:
o 225 by Kevin Smith B Grade 1956/57
o 215 by John Chadwick C1 1952/53
o 205 by Rob Gailey C1 Grade 1991/92.
His innings included 25 x 4 and 10 x 6s 160 runs in boundaries another Club record
The 10 x 6s equalled the Club record of hit 10 hit by Alex Sutcliff (D2) in his Semi Final innings of 132 against Berowra on 21st March 1998 also at Mimosa.
Russell obviously picked his fieldsmen well being dropped on 27 before being eventually caught!
Amazing effort we will try and get a photo of Russell on the website shortly.
Lost ball
Just on Russells innings, he dispatched the second new ball which Normanhurst were entitled to when we reached 200 for a six into the surrounding bushland - resulting in a lost ball. Being a gracious side who play cricket in the spirit intended we were agreeable to them replacing it with a similar 1-ball old ball!
Bad call
One for the Opposition. A comment from an enthusiastic opening bowler from Normo (C2) before Russells carnage, enthusiastically egging on his team to get rid of these WPHCC night watchmen! Oh dear.
