West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club Est. 1930

Round 3, Day 1 (24th October 2009)

Kanga kickoff
WPHCCC runs one of the state's biggest Junior cricket programs in Australia. Last Saturday about 120 youngsters turned out in their whites at Edward Bennett Oval as part of our Kanga program – some of them for their first time at cricket ever! Its believed kids 5 - 8 across the district were up and dressed at the crack of dawn, ready to go!

As far as numbers go, this is one of our biggest ever recorded years, and whilst the 'nursery' continues to develop young cricketers, more and more will progress through our ranks, continuing the development started when Kanga Cricket was kicked off at WPHCCC in 1992.

Well done to John Coulthard and his team!

Seniors Results
A1 Grade 3/186 defeated on first innings Castle Hill 134 and 1/24 – what a day with the boys ‘smoking’. Playing one short after Peter Stott had to go to hospital to have a baby (he had a boy today 25/10, his name is Scotty Stotty) we lost the toss and had to field.

Scott Henderson and Matt Spalding constantly beat the bat and were very unlucky, they bowled very quick but couldn't get the breakthrough. James Makin came on with the score at 0/65 and immediately took a wicket. Then Smoke Dawson came on and took two wickets in his first over and they were suddenly 3/83. They never recovered and were all out for 134 with James picking up 4 and Smoke 6.

With a fast outfield we put on 55 in the first 10 overs and our run rate never dropped. Gav Taylor was middling everything and we had 3 good partnerships to support him. He made 127* at better then a run a ball and after just 34 overs we declared on 3/186 and sent them in for 7 overs.

Again our opening bowlers beat the bat ball after ball, Hendo got a breakthrough in second last over of the day and next week we will push hard for an early outright victory.

A2 9/327 Vs Glenhaven – after losing the toss we got put into bat and made a solid start and ended up 9/327 with some good hitting towards the end. Matt Jobson promoted himself to open and smashed 83. Other highlights were Michael Banner with 49 and Michael McGregor with 34. Top effort from our boys, our 2nd score over 300 this season, with everyone chipping in with some runs. Great position to be in and should be able to knock off Glenhaven next week

Colts Red Vs Hornsby – Colts start up again on the 25th October after the HSC

Colts Blue Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee – Colts start up again on the 25th October after the HSC

B1 0/82 Vs Glaston-Glenorie 174 – back to form after a disappointing match last Round. Playing the extremely competitive GG who've dropped down from A2's we had them in early trouble at 2/21. They fought back well to be 3/89 at drinks due to some dropped chances and a lightning fast outfield. Scott Jobson came on and tied down an end bowling 18 straight overs taking 1/40. This was a great spell and really tightened the screws. Together with James Kealy (2/21 off 8) and Matt Thorndyke (1/10 off 7) we built up pressure that lead to wickets. After a great opening spell Rowan Keating came back into the attack to take a crucial wickets ending up with 4/40 off 14 overs. We finished them off at 174, a greatbowling effort. In reply we are in a strong position at 0/82 off 21 overs with Matt Thorndyke again superb on 46 not out, and Paul Tilley 26 not out.

B2 1/57 Vs Hornsby 226 – up against a team who had dropped down a grade, it wasn’t a promising start, going the whole first session without a breakthrough. But good persistence from everyone helped get the first wicket, and from there solid contributions from James (3/40), Benny Mac (3/50) and Ben N (2/24) helped us bowl them out for 226, although for the second week in a row, dropped catches have proved costly. With around 40mins to bat out the day, we finished 1/57 from 10 overs, with Alex the only man out for 34. A couple of other things of note from today. Firstly, Benny Mac finally took his first wicket for the season, after 4 matches and 40.1 overs without a scalp, he picked up 3 in 8 balls to get his tally up and running. Also, Alex Connell got out today for the second consecutive match whilst leaving (or attempting to leave) the ball – last match LBW, this time caught behind, each time having not looked like getting out until the only balls he didn’t try to hit for four.

C1 Vs Berowra – Sunday game. No play rain affected.

C2 Vs Normanhurst 307 – Normo won the toss and decided to bat. We bowled with discipline and applied pressure with wickets falling at regular intervals. One player who scored 220 not out a few weeks ago once again played a faultless innings scoring 143, before being trapped leg before by Jacques Visser. We ended the day on 0/4 in two overs. The challenge for us is to bat well next week and make a game of it. Special mention goes to Chris Williamson who bowled magnificently to record figures of 5/76 of 18 overs.

C3
White 3/153 defeated on first innings Berowra 77 – we are off to an excellent start, already with first innings points and a big lead over the previously undefeated Berowra. Winning the toss & bowling, we had Berowra in trouble early & never released our stranglehold on them. Taki Manolelis (3/26), got the early breakthrough, but the introduction of Chris Milocevic, filling in from Colts really set the cat among the pigeons. Berowra had no answer to his pace & accuracy, and he took 5/10 off 8 overs. Berowra out for 77. Our turn to bat and we made run scoring look much easier on a slow outfield. Pratah Sinnetamby (65) and Chris Milosevic (52 not out) have set up a big first innings lead, as we are 3/153 at stumps.

Blue Vs Normanhurst 8/275 – not getting better when it comes to the toss, lost it again and Normo chose to bat 1st, we were able to get some quick wickets, but in walked a young lad who played everything we threw at him, Russell had a busy day in the field chasing after the ball and Arun was able to bag him self 4/90 and Rahul managed 3/62. We are looking forward to day 2 where we canget on with the batting.

D1 0/4 Vs Hornsby 231 – details to follow. However, outstanding performances are Chris Grima 3/44 and Manod Wickramasinghe 4/46

D2 266 Vs St Ives – taking advantage of a depleted opposition attack and the fast outfield at Greenway we were rewarded with our best innings total of the season so far. Sam Thariani led the way with a masterful ( I quote a St Ives player ) innings of 97, ably assisted by Jake Hickman (49), the two combining to put on 97 for the second wicket, Sam steering us to 5-234 and laying the foundation of a total we can defend. Next week our bowlers will be tested when St Ives take their turn on this fast batting strip. Expect a thrilling finish.

An Off Day
Some 'interesting' short stories from our impressive B1 side:
• Our match against Normanhurst was one of those days where everything went wrong:
o Our batsmen particularly had an off day and frustrations showed. Upon reflection here are the highlights:
o Bronze...The Matts (Thorndyke and Scoular). After great starts to the season our guns bats were both out cheaply. Their frustration could be heard in the dressing room for minutes after their respective dismissals.
o Silver... Tim Worthington chopped one on to his stumps and was very disappointed with himself. His bat left the field 5 metres before he did.
o Gold... Scott Jobson copped a questionable lbw decision from an official umpire (the edge onto the pads could be heard from the sideline). His helmet got acquainted with the turf from about halfway off the field.

Maybe some angry pills before going out to bat might help the lads.

Junior achievements
Riley Miedler (U16) hit his first ever hundred of 101 no for WPHC White Vs WPHC Red. Well done Riley.

Fast scoring
Juniors
Gareth Linaker playing in the U16 T20 match on Tuesday hit 32 off 1 over at Campbell Park (full boundary). Sequence was 6-6-6-6-4-4 This the first recorded time that any player, Junior or Senior has taken 32 runs off a 6-ball over. Well done Gareth.

The all time record is 34 runs off a 6 ball over (plus 2 no balls) by Matt Scoular (Colts) on 27/1/2008 @ Storey Park.

@ Storey Park.

Seniors
Gav Taylor (A1) scored his first A Grade ton on Saturday. Some things about this ton worth knowing about:
• This is our 343rd century
• Gav brought up his 100 with 20 boundaries
• His 127* out of a team total of 3/186 was 68% of the team total – not a record but very good
• Gav is also the youngest player in our history to be chosen in A1 Grade at 15 years of age.

Well done Gav.

Thanks fella’s
In the C2 game last week special mention must go to Nikunj Patel who batted at #9 and made 48 not out (we declared thinking he had reached his 50 – only to find that Glenn Langley has no idea of scoring. Maybe next time Nick – maybe next time Glenn as the scorer.

With mates like this
Alex’s B1 Captain (Matt Thorndyke) commented “Alex Connell put in a dominating performance with the bat, until I fired him - trapped in front without playing a shot (from a rubbish leg spinner).” Good one Matt.
