Seniors Results
A1 Grade 8/175 defeated Vs St Ives 173 – after a washout last weekend this was another 1-dayer and an important win. We kept St Ives to 173 in 40 overs with Adam Walter 4/49 and Scott Henderson 3/29 starring with the ball. This set us up for a good win. After a good start we crashed to 8/130. James Makin batting at 3 top scored with 40 but we still had a lot to do. Enter ‘man mountains’ Scott Henderson with 30* and ‘foot breaker’ Matt Spalding 24 and they put on 45 to get us across the line. A big win to put us back in the pack.

A26/128 defeated St Ives 126 – after bowling our way into a strong position on Day 1 the 1st day’s play was cancelled due the game being played on an ‘unauthorised’ ground. A strange decision given the long history of this type of outcome but reality.

After winning the toss we decided to put St Ives into bat. We bowled tightly, taking wickets regularly to have them all out for 126. Highlights were Dylan Brogan with 3/32 and Matthew Jobson 2/15. After losing a few wickets we consolidated, and made the runs after just 31 overs, with 4 wickets in hand. Our first win of the season.

Colts Red Vs Hornsby – Colts start up again on the 24th October after the HSC

Colts Blue Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee – Colts start up again on the 24th October after the HSC

B1 156 lost to Normanhurst-Warrawee 9/193 – another 1-dayer after being washed out last week. Something different for a change, this strong side lost a game in a very rusty performance after losing the last two weeks to wet weather. In the field we dropped numerous chances and struggled to build pressure. Matt Thorndyke (2/39) and Andrew Joyce (2/52) took wickets while Rowan Keating (1/18 from 8 overs) bowled economically. With the bat we lost too many wickets in quick succession to be 7/66 before Rowan Keating (44) and Andrew Joyce (31) put up a late fight back. The story of the game was basically ‘they catch and we don’t’ Looking to bounce back in a two-day game next Round. Big congratulations to Rowan Keating and tim Millington who both achieved their 1,000 run milstones.

B2 201 defeated on first innings Mt Colah 100 2/179 - not a great day for us on Sunday. Batting on, we pushed our first innings lead to 101, confident that this put us in a good position to push for an outright result. However, nothing really went our way in the field, with a couple of dropped catches and plenty of fortunate edges somehow avoiding fielders, Mt Colah pushed their score along to 179 before their batsman reached his century and stumps was called. The only wickets in the second innings coming from Tim Scoular (1/25) and James M (1/36).

C1 119 defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee 108 – after playing on a slow, wet ground with uncut grass where our 119 was worth over 200 Headen Park this week was dry and recently cut – low. With edges going for 4 this was a huge effort to get up. Our bowlers were superb. Andrew Watt took the honours with 3/26 (13 overs) and John Steel was superb with 2/26 (15) including the final wicket to bowl their top scorer with only 12 runs to go. Craig Hutchinson with 2/20 from 13 precise overs and Daniel Anderson with 2/7 (3) after his 5/32 in the morning, just strangled the run rate. A big win, especially given the difference in conditions.

C2 8/301 lost to Hornsby – 600 runs between both teams says it all. After batting on to get 300 on a fast Annangrove Oval Hornsby ran the total down with overs to spare. The tone was set with a straight driven 6 first ball in their innings and an opening partnership of 149 from 20 overs. Best bowlers for us were Chris Williamson 3/77 and Nik Patel with 2/44. Special mention must go to Nkujn Patel who batted at #9 and made 48 not out (we declared thinking he had reached his 50 – only to find that GST is not added to cricket scores Glenn!!!)

C3 148 defeated outright Normanhurst-Warrawee 57 and 66 – welcome back to the winners list – big-time. While St Ives were a few players down with injury this had no effect on the result – only the speed of the win – it was finished by 3.00pm. There were so many stars – Riley Meilder had match figures on 5/22 plus his 25 runs, Luke Herzog 3/9 plus top scoring with 27, Taki Manolelis 3/8. All up, an outright win clocked up by 3.00pm and in 24 overs. The other major achievement was final proof that the big change in Team performance can with a new Captain – well done to Brett Hawkins – his fist game as Captain and someone who clearly knows how to win.

D1
Blue 5/197 defeated WPHC Red 92 – the Blues continued the bowling attack with both Arun & Rahul wrapping things up. In the Red’s batting, Vikas Manchandas finished with a great 42, in came Arun Kumar top scored with a fantastic 51 (retired). Best bowlers for the Reds were Ian Nichol 3/14 & Rahul Sabherwal with 3/37. For the Reds, missing a few players this week Roger Friend with 2/20 was the best. Another highlight was the spirit of the 2 teams. In the words on Jonathan van Blerk “It's great to see a club that has members that can compete on the field and still enjoy each others company after the game, (even if it is to talk about the strategic use of the rabbit holes)”.

D2 195 defeated Castle Hill 121 – our first, well deserved win of the season was a far closer run thing than the 74 run margin might suggest. Starting one man short, and at one point reduced to just nine in the field, we were hard put to keep the lid on a strong Castle Hill batting line-up while our bowlers did their work. Ankit Grover got the big wickets and took 4 - 26. He was ably assisted by Nikhil Suresh, bowling his best yet to take 3 - 20, while, in just four overs, Ben Pilipowski gave us everything: a disasterous start followed by a great, fighting comeback, culminating in a double wicket maiden, only missing the hat-trick ball by the end of the opposition innings: he finished with 3 - 17.

The high standard of our fielding was exemplified by Ankit Grover's brilliant slips catch, while the prize for guts must go to Joshua Murray-Howard: felled by the ball in a piece of body-on-the-line fielding, he had to be sent off the field with blood streaming down his face, but was back on deck in no time, determined to help us finish off the job.

Simon Smyth – the wedding (the sequel)
The big day happened with Mel (Simon’s now wife) surprising everyone by saying ‘I do’ on the big day on Friday. As covered last week, Simon had his foot broken by (we think) big Matt Spalding’s size 15’s. So here we have Simon getting married with his foot broken. Enter the Best Man (didn’t know that you were that desperate Simon) Bill Peterkin who managed to outdo Simon by breaking his toe by kicking the dog just before the wedding. Photo’s of the big day will be on the website very soon.

It’s not out Riley
Talented Junior, Riley Miedler (C3) is rapidly learning the difference between a Bye and a dismissal. After the batsman was hit on the pad, young Riley, fielding at point, went up for a LBW appeal. The umpire raised his arm (to signal byes to the scorers) which cause Riley to scream with delight and start running in thinking that the umpire for raising his finger. He was the only person on the field confused which was quite embarrassing for him but highly amusing to everyone else.

Matt Spalding – making an impact
Got to hand it to the A1 ‘Man Mountain’ opening Bowler. Visions of his 18 ball maiden over in A1 3 seasons ago came back with his 9-ball effort on the weekend. This included a head high full toss to one of the St Ives players. Still a long way off the record 26 ball over effort by Chris Cavanagh way back in 1980/81.

“I didn’t mean to try and kill your son”
One of the full tosses in Matt’s over was the head high effort. Matt, showed all the class and understanding expected of a fast bowler and went across to the batsman’s mother at the break and offered the heart-felt apology “I didn’t mean to try and kill your son”. Well done big fella.

The Junkkari ball
We’ve heard of the Doosra, Wrong-un, toppy and so on but there is now another one. It happens that the Association Masters have termed a ball the ‘Junkkari ball’ named after our C1 superstar Eric Junkkari (then playing B1) who in 1997/98 watched a very slow looping ‘Chinaman’ delivery from Nugget Bailey (Kenthurst) at Thornleigh Oval slowly float through the air and with arms raised, he watched the ball trickle into the stumps with the bat raised. For the record, Eric was left out of the Semi Finals as he clearly had no idea what a bat was – how times have changed now.

Big spenders
Got to hand it to our A1 players. Ian Paterson, one of our A1 umpires was hand delivered a written note from the people who run the Kenthurst Canteen on the weekend letting our A1 know that the canteen will be closed for their December game. The reason is that our A1 has he consistent record of being the biggest eaters of any visiting Team. None better than Bill Peterkin who actually circles the Kenthurst games in the draw and has a huge appetite for their sausage rolls and hot dogs.

Quiet as a Church
In the C1 game things got a little willing – as they sometimes do. To lighten up the moment, Eric Junkkari made a comment along the lines “We are all just weekend hackers” but this was considered by the Umpires as ‘inciting a riot’ – everyone thought the comment was actually hillarious.
