Semi Finals - 14th March 2009

Club Championship
Juniors
Congratulations to our Juniors who have now won the Club Championship for the 2nd year in a row which makes this 6 times out of the last 7 years. This is a tremendous achievement and helps to explain why our Seniors are also very strong.

Seniors
Congratulations also to our Seniors who won the Club Championship for a record 6 times in succession. More details on this below.

Seniors
Semi Final results follow. Once the Draw for the Finals is released the website will be updated early next week.

A2 121 and 60 defeated Kenthurst 100 and 0/3 – a brilliant result against Minor premier Kenthurst. After getting 121 on a very slow outfield we were always a chance if we bowled well and held our catches. Our bowlers were superb. Scott Henderson took 4/26 from 22 overs and got fabulous backup from Darren Morrow 3/29 (20 overs) and Matt Jobbo with his 3/22 (12). We battled to suck up overs at the end and left them 3 overs at the end to bat. This puts us into the Final for our 3rd consecutive time with the Team on a roll.

Colts Red 75 lost to Kissing Point 329 and 4/14 – this was a case where the match was determined by the toss. Although the run chase was going to be very tough the midweek rain changed Storey Park from a batting paradise into a minefield. Disappointingly, once we were dismissed by Kissing Point and conceding the victory to them they announced that they were going to have a second innings to get some "batting practice". By the time the lunch break had arrived they decided that they had endured enough of this type of practice with their score at 4/14. The season was a fantastic one for this team and reaching the semi finals in their first year of Colts is an achievement each player should be proud of.

Colts Blue 113 and 72 lost to (tieing first innings) Berowra 113 and 2/41 – an unbelievably close game. Scores were tied on first innings at 113 a piece. With Berowra needing one run to tie or two to win a no ball for height was called by the black and white. The ball bowled the batsman and the non striker was running down the pitch. James McBrien who was wicket keeping picked up the ball and threw down the stumps at the bowlers end which resulted in the last Berowra wicket going down but the one for the no ball meant scores were tied Lots of examination over the score books which were eventually signed off by the umpire

As Berowra finished higher on the ladder we needed now to try for the outright. We went in to try and score quick runs and were all out for 72 in 18 overs. We had 33 overs left in the day and although the guys tried hard we just could not take the wickets needed. A fantastic season and a match the guys will remember for a long time.

B2 White 98 lost to Pymble 188 – at first glance this was a comprehensive loss. However, take out a 123* effort by a ‘ring-in’ they would have struggled to get close to our score. Our bowlers again proved that we are able to defend any score around 180/200. John Steel bowled beautifully to take 4/22 with good backup from Jas Singh 2/35 and John Mitchell 2/9 (3 overs). How about Nathan Fathers who in 7 years with us has only bowled 3 overs *(way back in A2 2002/03) who took 2/5 from 1 over – obviously grossly under-bowled over many years.

C2 8/223 defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee 122 – Normo resumed at 0/11, and by the first drinks break after 21 overs today, we hadn't taken a wicket. Chris Creais made the first 2 breakthroughs after drinks (8 overs, 2/9). 3 more wickets before tea, and we were in a good position (5/95). The end came quickly after tea with both Geoff's Richards & Starr applying plenty of pressure to see us home. Stars with teh ball were the ‘old stagers’ – Geoff Richards with 5/42 and Geoff Starr 3/16. We go on to play 1st placed-St Ives, who we've beaten twice already this season, so we are in with a good show.

C3 116 lost to Berowra 300 – after having them 5 down for 90 they passed our score in the 35th over of the day. They decided to continue batting and we persisted to finally dismiss them for just over 300. Berowra then wanted to call it a day but since we had toiled away in the field with good humour decided that we would have some fun with the bat for the remaining 13 overs. Partially reversing the batting order saw us 5 down when play finally ended in semi-darkness following some lusty batting from Russel Ingram and Jacques Visser, who smashed a scintillating 6 over the point boundary (the shot he had been dreaming about since he can remember). Another season is behind us – hopefully the winter is long enough for aching bodies to recover and allow enough time for Jacques to get the smile off his face!!

D1 117 lost to Vs Berowra 8 dec 188 – a disappointing result for a team that has played so well all season and really deserved to go further. Batting today for us, Chris Milojevic top scored, fighting it out for three hours at the crease for 48, while Bruce Caldwell put in a heroic effort, batting for two hours for his 19, most of it with a pulled thigh muscle and the services of a runner – a draw would have got us into the Final. We may have fallen at the second last hurdle but this team has had a great season and just can't wait for September to roll around so we can pick up where we left off.

D2 168 and 2/60 defeated St Ives 135 – defending a challenging total of 168 at Greenway (normally a 300+ oval), we resumed the 2nd day's play with St Ives at 0/44 after 14 overs. Step up Ian Nichol who cleaned bowled one of their danger men in the very first over which set the momentum for the rest of the day. We ended up getting St Ives all out for 135 which is a fantastic effort on this oval. Vish Ratnam (4/31 off 9 overs) & Ian Nichol (4/38 off 15 overs) were the pick of the bowlers who did all the damage, not to mention a great team effort in the field. St Ives put us back with the hope of an outright, but we saw this challenge off, finishing 2/60 after 28 overs. Claudio Van Blerk top scored with 34*. So for a bunch of "normal" soccer nuts who decided to play cricket for a bit of fun (most players haven't played cricket in 25 years).

Last Premiership
We have a long history of success in Finals in all Grades. For those Teams making the Finals our last Premierships were:
• A2 – 2006/07 (runners up 2007/08) – James Makin (Captain)
• C2 – 2004/05 (runners up 2007/08) – Craig Willmott
• D2 – 2006/07 (Rob McBrien)

Club Championship
We have now won the Club Championship for a record 6th year in succession. This is a fantastic achievement given the difficulty of putting 11 strong teams on the field. The Final standings are:
WPHC 1806
Kenthurst 1625
Berowra 1462
St Ives 1452
Kissing Point 1437
Normanhurst-Warrawee 1384
Asquith Rugby League 1183
Castle Hill RSL 1167
Hornsby District 1156

Presentation Night
One for the diary. Our Presentation Night is on as follows:
