Cricket NSW Volunteer of the Year Award
Some great news to share with you. Our Club Chairperson, Barry McDonald, has been nominated by CNSW as one of only 3 Sydney North Volunteers of the Year. Barry has to attend a function on 12th January at which the one Sydney North Volunteer and Cricket NSW Volunteer of the Year will be announced.

What makes this extraordinary is that another person from our Club won it last year and to have Barry, also from WPHC nominated is amazing when you think of the number of wonderful volunteers across Sydney North - let alone our own great Club. If the decision is based on achievements then he is a lay down certainity.

Seniors
A1 9/159lost to Berowra 7/162 – after finally getting onto the field after a month of wet weather we just missed out. James Making with 58 was the backbone of the innings. No update on the bowling yet but just not enough.

A2 8/164 lost to Kenthurst 8/170 – batting first against the 1st placed team we got a competitive score at Dural Park. After losing early wickets Sujith got a very good 43* with great support from Darren Morrow with 33. We had them on the ropes at 5/45 but they got them in the last over with 4 balls to go. Super bowling from Matt Jobbo with 3/31 and Scott Henderson 2/5. After leading the Comp we have now lost our last 4 games – most in close contests so after the Christmas break there is still an opportunity for a turnaround for this talented side.

Colts Red 87 tied with Kenthurst 87 – what a game! This week's lottery at Turramurra Oval saw us bat first and struggling our way to 87 with Tom Blissenden top scoring with 23. In reply, Kenthurst looked comfortable at 1/35 but the game was turned around with Adam Hutchings claiming the next 7 wickets for just 7 runs in 8 overs. In what seemed to be a just outcome, Isaac Malamel took a solid catch off Parneet's bowling to secure the tie. Adam’s bowling performance is a special performance. He is now the top wicket taker in Colts with 16 and this is the 129th time a WPH player has taken 7 wickets or better in a match in our 78 year history. Well done mate.

Colts Blue 8/160 defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee 121 – another very solid performance that consolidates this team at the top of the table. The Kleinhan’s brothers Joshua (54*) and Sam (28) starred in a solid tem performance. In the bowling Dylan Brogan continues to impress with 3/20 to take his season tally to 11 wickets at 8.4 in a rain affected season. Very good momentum has now been built going into the business end of the season.

B1 90 lost to Glenhaven 9/162 – what was looming as a big game saw a big loss to our main competitor for the Title this season. Not a lot to report other than we fell short of their big first innings total. Next time.

B2 Red 6/211 defeated Kissing Point 210 – what a game – a 1-run win on the last ball of the day with a run-out from the outfield. Batting first we set a formidable score with Alex Connell again leading the way with 80 after his last up ton and Tim Millington making a welcome return with44. Our turn to bowl. Detailed figures are not yet to hand but the game got down to the last ball and we did it. What makes this even better is that this puts us right back into calculation for a top 4 spot.

B2 White Vs Bye – an easy 6 points putting the feet up and waiting for the next game.

C2 5/139 lost to CHRSL 8/140 – Geoff Richards again was in great form with 42 retired. Paul Mullinger made a fine return with 29* at the end. We were probably 15 runs short. CH passed us in the 39th over 8 wickets down. Some poor fielding let them out of jail. Best bowlers were Geoff Riochards, Paul Mullinger & James Creais each with 2 wickets.

C3 8/153 lost to Normanhurst-Warrawee 6/154 – batting first lost 4 wickets for 40 before Rolf Rasmussen 50 and Steve Baker 35 put on 90 for the 5th wicket to get us to a respectable total. Despite some controlled bowling with Chris taking 2 for 23 and Steve Baker 2 for 25 a few missed opportunities was the difference between the win and we went down with only 6 balls remaining. This would have been a handy win against the last placed team but we still have time to finish the new year with a kick.

D1 179 lost to Kissing Point 8/194 – another close match against this strong team and, once again, our fielding rather than the opposition, proved to be our undoing, Kissing Point putting on 73 runs for their last ten overs. In spite of this our batsmen did a great job chasing down their daunting total of 194, and got to just fifteen runs short when our last wicket fell in the final over. The backbone of our innings was an inspiring 91 run partnership for the fourth wicket by Brendan Harkin (39) and a rejuvenated Bruce Caldwell (47), both playing one-day cricket like a pair of pros, running superbly between the wickets until both eventually ran out of puff, and were run out, in quick succession. The highlight of our bowling was Chris Grima's 4-23. Chris nearly missed the match due to an ear infection: I'll never let him take a day off sick again! That's twice we have played this team and twice our shortcomings in the field have proven the only significant difference: we know what we have to do before we meet them again.

D2 1/112 defeated Kenthurst 9/110 – batting first we had Kenthurst at 7/37 after 13 overs, but they managed to add another 73 runs before we got them all out. Ian Nichol got 3/4 and was our best bowler. The target was reasonable, but up came young Daniel Anderson who opened the batting and started the run chase in fine form. Daniel was a pleasure to watch in action and managed to score 81* in what was one of our best run chases so far this season. A mighty fine support role from Andy Duff in an opening partnership of 56, followed by another 56 partnership between Daniel and Russell Smith. This win cements D2s position at the top of the ladder as we enter the new-year. Thanks for helping out Daniel, you are welcome to join the D2s any time your available. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Standings
After 7 Rounds we have:
1. 5 teams coming 1st
2. 0 coming 2nd
3. 1 coming 3rd
4. 2 coming 4th
5. 2 in 5th spot (all in striking distance)

Late bloomer
Roger Friend (D1 Captain) has taken 102 wickets since making his debut way back in 1997/98 at an average of 9 wickets / year. This year he has gone ‘feral’ taking 20 wickets after only 7 games and lives in ‘fear’ of a re-grading as he is 2nd on the wicket taking list for D1. Just goes to show that the older you get the smarter you become as a bowler. Keep them coming Roger.

THE run chase
The Peter Westerberg (D2) run chase in bringing up his career 100 runs is starting to get increasing focus around the Club. The interest is whether he will notch up 100 innings before he scores 100 runs. 'The Man' is doing it in style with another forceful 6 runs yesterday. So....only 16 runs short and still 27 innings to get there! In Peter’s own words “at this rate, just another three inning should do it!

Running feast
We had the opportunity of watching the D2 side at close range on Saturday. Apart from being a good team, they really look forward to the change in innings. Over the years I haven’t see a better spread of food that was devoured throughout the innings. Everything from home baked cakes, Subway, fresh fruit, sausage rolls, chips, sandwiches – the list goes on. No wonder the boys were keen to see a big opening partnership – there was too much food to be put down by having to bat.

Three times ‘lucky’
Spare a thought for our talented B2 Red side who seem to find ways to miss out completing games they have set-up to win. Already they have had a vandalised pitch after scoring 360 runs. Follow this up with the only non-turf game washed out last round after posting 330 runs and this weekend they rock up to Greenway Oval only to find in Eric’s words “a stage set-up on the ground as big as an elephant". This time they found another Oval and won on the last ball by 1-run.

The West Penno curse
Spare a thought for Kissing point B2 (just a little one). They are coming 3rd but have now played our B2 White and Red side. On each occasion they have lost by 1 run with yesterday’s effort also on the last ball of the day. More of it!

Club record
Our latest Club record was achieved at Holland Road Oval in the D2 game Vs Kenthurst. Daniel Anderson (who is 13) scored 81* of a winning innings total of 1/112 which is 72.3% of the total. This effort passed the previous record set by Club great Greg Fiedler in C1 (23/10/2004) who scored 95 out of 146 (65.1% of the total). Well done DA.

Personal Milestone achievements
As at the end of Round 8 standings are:

Body Science Compression sports gear
BSC are Club sponsors. They provide compression sporting clothing to major sporting stars. Many NRL Clubs use BSC in preference to Skins. For every purchase, BSC rebate 10% back to our Club that is then used for development - training improvements, coaching and so on.

This product is especially useful for any player who gets niggles during or after games. It is also a very good idea for for Junior and Senior Rep players who have to back up on Saturday's/Sundays plus added training requirements.

If you are thinking about buying compression sports clothing then look no further than BSC - they are superior to Skins and the Club gets a benefit that goes back to our players.

The gear is available in black or white. If you need more information then please go to the BSC website on http://www.bodyscience.com.au/. The website also has a more complete listing of the compression gear product range and also sizing charts to help you work out the right size.

How do I get this gear
Bill Peterkin has kindly offered to be the link between our Club and BSC. All you need to do is to work out what you would like and let Bill know your requirements.
