West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club Est. 1930

Round 3, Day 1, 11th October 200808

Junior highlights
· In a rich vein of form from the U16 Red’s, Alex Rashleigh again starred in the game against Mt Colah @ Mt Ku-ring-gai scoring 79. Shashankh Thirumeni also scored 53 in another imposing total of 268
· L Vile scored our 3rd Junior ton of the year with 106* against another WPHC side – the Reds
· W Lee also scored a century – 100* against Hornsby
· To cap off a fabulous weekend the U15 Blue scored 5/305 which is the highest recorded score (records are a bit rough prior to 1970) but this would be up there with the best.

U15 Rep players
Congratulations to our Weblin Shield players: Alex Rashleigh, Anjan Oberai. Also to our IDCA players: Taki Manolelis and Ashane DeSilva.

Green Shield:
Alex Rashleigh is also the 2nd of our West Penno players to be selected in Green Shield. Well done Alex – a fantastic achievement.

Seniors
A1 295 Vs Berowra 2/16 – another impressive effort form this imposing team. Even better is that the highest individual score was ‘only’ 40 meaning the performances are well spread. Bill Peterkin top scored with 41, James Makin 40, Gav Taylor 36, Sujith 27, Adam Walter 25 and Amir Marzouk 26. In reply Amir Marzouk has the 2 wickets to fall. Well done fella’s.

A2 9/282 Vs Galston Glenorie 2/2 – a very good score from another of our talented sides. Alex Robertson was the star with 66, Matt Jobbo scored 44, Lalin 37 and Darren Morrison got 28 in his first appearance for the Club. To cap off a fantastic day, Scott Henderson took 2/2 in 2 overs to have us well on top.

Colts Red 7/134 lost to Normanhurst/Warrawee 2/137 – a case of not enough runs to put pressure on the opposition batsmen. Probably another 40 runs would have meant that Normanhurst would have had to approach the run chase in a different manner. With a few one dayers coming up we should learn from this one. Hiran Nagahawatta with 33 runs, Patrick Bertoldo and Ben Lyttle with 25 each were best with the bat. Thanks also to Giyan Dharmadasa and Damon Steer from the Under 16's for filling in this week.

Colts Blue 5/129 defeated Kissing Point 128. Strange game in that Kissing Point only had 7 players to bat. The guys bowled reasonably well but need to improve their catching as both of the Kissing Point players who scored runs were dropped early in their innings. Had the catches been taken it might have been a very early day. The last Kissing Point wicket fell in the 32nd over. In our innings, James McBrien 43 and Tim Starr with 33 were the best. We got the final runs in the 30th over so we will take the points with another solid performance.

B1 207 Vs Kenthurst 8/29 – unbelievable! The Thorndyke’s are again making a statement about their ability. Matt T scored 57, Chris T 36 with Macca McDowell chipping in with 35. Overall a comfortable total that we could defend. Then the fireworks. After 5 overs, a strong Kenthurst side were 0/12. In the next 7 overs they lost 8/17! The highly talented Andrew Joyce took 5/17 including a hat-trick and a further 2 wickets in 2 balls and just miss another hat-trick. Rowan Keating with 3/10 was also superb. Andrew’s hat-trick is the 33rd in our long history.

Something to aim for – the lowest Opposition B1 Grade score in our history is 15 (Vs Glenorie 1958/59). The 2nd lowest is 35 Vs Kenthurst at Kenthurst in 2001. Let’s make a new record fella’s.

B2 8/369 Vs Pymble – yet another massive score by a West Penno team. Tim Millington scored our 333rd Club ton with a wonderful 117 with 20 boundaries! (well done mate) but how about the back up. Sahil Kahana got 58, Eric Junkkari scored 52 (12 fours and only 3 singles!) and Ashane De Silva 31. Just like our other teams the runs were spread which is a very good sign for the future. Champion effort fella’s.

C1 284 Vs Hornsby 4/46 – what a back-up to the 353 scored last match. This total was scored in only 42 overs! John Steel was a powerhouse with 93 but like each of our other teams everyone else scored 20’s and 30’s. Gus Grima was next best with 31. One of those days where gaps were found and the ball was hit with power all innings. Enter the bowlers for 20 overs before stumps. In another show of depth 4 bowlers all took one wicket – John Steel, Jaskaran, DA and Craig Hutchinson. This team is developing rapidly into an imposing group.

C2 Vs Mt Colah 179 – playing another fathers / sons / daughter team with wickets shared evenly. Given the bowling restrictions we think that in the words of Andrew Fiedler "10 wicket keepers probably had a bowl....and were pretty successful at it !" Looking good for next week.

C3 Vs Berowra 8/390 – we had “one of those long days at the office”. After winning the toss and putting Berowra in to bat we had them 4/58 before two big partnership of 157 was followed by another of 161 when our catching let us down on a few occasions. Mark Bell (3/79) and Amesh DeSilva (3/51) were our stand out bowlers. The very short square boundaries at Holland Road have a few of our batsmen drooling over the thought of batting next week. Although it is a daunting total we should be competitive if we apply ourselves.

D1 268 Vs Hornsby 0/28 – another big total posted by us despite a middle order batting collapse. Our batting heroes came in pairs: Brendan Harkin (87) and Faisal Shamsi (49) putting on 108 for the second wicket while Marco Delgado (43) and Luke Christensen (25) added 65 for the eighth wicket to help us to a competitive total to bowl to next week. A close finish expected against this keen, young Hornsby side.

D2 Vs Normanhurst / Warrawee – results to come.

Ugly dog that one
Got to hand it to one of our C1 players who is old enough to know better. While on the sideline a genuinely ugly dog was hanging around the lads. This player made a comment that “I would like to see the owner as they reckon dogs look like their owners”. You guessed it, just in ear shot was the owner who quickly volunteered this fact. The quick reply was ‘handsome dog’.

Top catch – number 1
John Steel (C1) showed achieved another first on the weekend. While on his way to 93 and obviously seeing the ball well the opening bowler bowled a full head high toss. John just did what just comes naturally, he threw up a hand and caught the ball – as one does. Haven’t seen this happen before and nor had the Opposition who said nothing – probably in surprise.

Not to be outdone with that. He then also showed his ability in catching a further 2 throws coming in from fieldsmen – while he was batting.

Top catch – number 2
The great Bill Peterkin backed up his top score in A1 with, from all reports a brilliant catch at Gully. The reports vary – he was either 3 metres in the air, parallel to the ground with an extended arm, fell over trying to reach a ball that was past him or simply was 1 metre parallel to the ground. The stories are getting better as the post match beers flow but it sounded like a beauty.

Smelly cap
In true A1 spirit Bill Peterkin had one of those ‘moments’ going out to bat. Wearing the famous WPHC baggy blue with the reverence it deserves, Bill realised he could smell something. It was in fact stale beer that remained in his cap after it was used as a drinking glass last week. It must have worked as he top scored with 41.

Body Science Compression sports gear
BSC are Club sponsors. They provide compression sporting clothing to major sporting stars. Many NRL Clubs use BSC in preference to Skins. For every purchase, BSC rebate 10% back to our Club that is then used for development - training improvements, coaching and so on.

This product is especially useful for any player who gets niggles during or after games. It is also a very good idea for for Junior and Senior Rep players who have to back up on Saturday's/Sundays plus added training requirements.

If you are thinking about buying compression sports clothing then look no further than BSC - they are superior to Skins and the Club gets a benefit that goes back to our players.

The gear is available in black or white. If you need more information then please go to the BSC website on http://www.bodyscience.com.au/. The website also has a more complete listing of the compression gear product range and also sizing charts to help you work out the right size.

How do I get this gear
Bill Peterkin has kindly offered to be the link between our Club and BSC. All you need to do is to work out what you would like and let Bill know your requirements.
