Tamworth trip
During the 1st week of January WPHC was invited to play in the T Cricket Carnival normally reserved for Representative teams from areas such as Tamworth/Quirindi, Coffs Harbour, Nambucca Heads and Gunnedah all games played on turf. We were invited because of our size and to initially make up the numbers after a Team withdrawal. The Team did so well we are now likely to be invited back again. A brief report on the tour by Andrew Fiedler follows:
"Suffice to say, we played Tamworth, Coffs Harbour, Tamworth/Quirindi, Nambucca & Gunnedah. All proved a bit strong for us, but we were competitive in each game. We shared the batting and bowling around quite evenly, so didn't put any emphasis on winning (well, except in 1 game!!). A number of boys also took turns in captaining a side for the first time, so gained some really valuable experience. As a whole, it was a hugely beneficial experience, with the kids going on a tour for the first time & playing on good turf wickets. Everyone I spoke to afterwards said what a wonderful time they had and most were quite keen on doing it again. Hopefully this will be the forerunner of a long relationship our club will have with country cricket carnivals."
Check out the photo gallery for some fabulous photos form the Tour.
Congratulations
Well done to 3 WPH Juniors who were selected in the combined Sydney Green Shield Team (U16):
Daniel Brain (representing Mosman - WPHC U16) an ex-Kanga
Harpreet Singh (Western Suburbs - WPHC U16)
Gavin Taylor (Northern Districts - WPHC A1) first reserve
Kanga
A few years ago our Kangas were used in a Milo advertisement. Our photo gallery has a record of this fabulous day. We have now been asked to support an updated ad that will be produced in early 2008 so looks like some of our Kangas will get their moment of stardom. Stay tuned.
Seniors
What we thought would be the 1st day of a 2-day game not to be for many teams who were rain affected. For those playing 1 day games matches start at 1.00 pm and go for 35 overs:
A1 Vs Hornsby washed out and will play a 1-dayer next week.
A2 4/16 Vs Kenthurst 137 after a bit of rain, we sent Kenthurst into bat. Really slow outfield, managed to get them all out for 137. Scott Henderson, Steve Quanborough and Ben Frawley all took 3 wickets each and bowled really well. With 16 overs or so to bat, we are 4/16, but its anyones game at this stage.
Colts Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee washed out today.
B1 Blue Vs Mt Colah no play 1-dayer next weekend.
B1 Red Vs Mt Colah 0/10 this game lasted only 30 minutes. Nothing spectacular in this game and will be played as a 1-dayer next week.
C1 White Vs C1 Red no play.
C2 Vs Hornsby no play
D2 128 Vs Galston Glenorie 2/74 not a good toss to lose, Galston-Glenorie taking advantage of a very slow, wet outfield to restrict our scoring on this small ground, yet seeming able to score readily themselves on a ground they know well. Batting for WPHC, an in form Claudio Van Blerk (32) and Ben Pilipowski (30) were the best, with a gutsy two-and-a-half hour effort from Claudio who carried an injury onto the field. Injury and bad luck also deprived us of some of our best batting early in the innings, with Alok Pradhan retired, hurt and Roger Friend unlucky to be dismissed for a duck, our 128 a respectable score under the circumstances.
In reply Galston-Glenorie made it look all too easy, rocketing to 74 with the loss of just two wickets in the 13 overs we bowled to them before stumps, both wickets falling to Shankar Ravi, including yet another stumping bringing the Caldwell-Ravi stumping tally for the season thus far to 8. It looks like a pretty tough haul from here to steal an improbable victory from looming defeat, but, with the ball just 13 overs old, two of their best batsmen back in the pavilion and Brannavan Ramachandran back with us again next week, we are not about to concede this one yet!
Fees
A final reminder for those folks who have not yet paid their fees, our large Association bill is now due for payment. Your Captains will be approaching anyone with fees still outstanding. For Seniors these are $250 and Juniors $190. The early payment discount incentive of $20 has now passed. After this coming match priority for selection will be given to financial players. Thanks for your help.
Fast scoring yet another record
Two weeks ago we reported on a record run scoring effort from Ronan Barrett (A2) by hitting 24 runs in an over with 6 successive 4s. This has now been outdone! Last Sunday Matt Scoular (Colts) hit a Club record of 34 off an over eight 4s (plus the 2 no balls)! Now this is special. The bowler bowled an eight ball over (2 no balls) and every ball was hit for a boundary. How about this for a record:
It is the highest number of runs ever scored in a single over by a West Penno player in 62 years
The previous record was 30 by Ian Paterson and Roger Friend in D1 in 2004
Previous records (Ronans aside) were sprinkled with 6s but not this one.
Spare a thought for the bowler - a check of the iSport scorecard shows the figures of 1 over, no maidens 0/34! Might be a short bowling career.
This is an amazing achievement the like of which we may never see again. Well done Matt.
Our most remarkable debut
An amazing biological event happened last Saturday (26th January) in the C1 White game against Pymble. Daniel Anderson (12 years of age) has the Association record for being the youngest player ever to play in this Association. On Saturday he made his debut as a Registered player when he played C1. Why is this special? He last played Seniors, 2 months before he was born (and prior to having a name) when his mother fielded 7 months pregnant in a B1 Semi Final filling in for a player who was absent. His debut 12 years later now concludes this remarkable double debut! He also top scored for the match with 22.
There was also an unsavoury comment at this match 12 years ago. Daniels father who was bowling had a catch go to deep square leg where the very pregnant Denise was fielding. When a catch went up and she was waddling to the ball this individual yelled out Dive. The response to an incredulous Umpire was I can always have another baby but this might be my last wicket. Choice!
Dont mention the war
Sorry Gav (Gavin Taylor (A1). A1 has a fine system that whenever Gavs name is mentioned on the website he is fined we think a few blokes wan to their name listed instead. But...the young fella has done it again being selected in the Combined Sydney Green Shield team squad. This is a fantastic achievement Gav well done.
