Round 6, Day 2 (24th Novemberv 2007)

Clubs Day
Cricket NSW is running its annual “Clubs Day’ for the Twenty/20 ‘Big Bash’ match between NSW and the Western Warriors at Telstra Stadium on the 10th January starting at 7.00 pm.

The promotion wants Junior Teams to turn up in Club colours in a ratio of 4:1 (12 kids to 3 adults) to be in the running for prizes.

If interested then please let your Manager know so that it can be passed on to Cricket NSW – we need to respond by 14th December.

Smash for Cash
Also in this game any one aged 16 to 18 years can participate in a ‘Smash for Cash’ competition at Telstra. So any big hitting, big kids’ in this age group then please get back Ross Anderson. Only those who register are eligible to participate. Even if you are not 140 Kg this is a chance to have a hit on the turf at Telstra – just get back to me.

WPH Sports Club Elections
Thanks to all those who voted at the Elections over the last couple of weeks.

We didn’t take a position on the Chairman, but Denis Montgomery was re-elected for another term. Denis is a supporter of our Club so congratulations mate.

Also congratulations to both Keith Robinson and Ray Peterkin who were re-elected to the Board – both of these blokes had our support.

Girls
Competition starts on Saturday 13th October running through to the 15th December. Games then re-commence on the 2nd February until 1st March with Semi Finals / Finals played over 8th and 15th March 2008. This gives us 14 weeks of competition plus finals.

Seniors
An overcast weekend but we got on. The results after Day 2 are:

A1 92 and 7/199 lost to Hornsby 189 and 5 dec. 106. A mighty comeback after being 5/20 overnight. In the first innings Gav Taylor showed what he has in top scoring with 42. Batting a second time we put them under pressure and had them 4/11 at one stage before finishing at the declaration score of 5/106. Well done to Amir Marzouk with 3 and simon Smyth 2 wickets. This gave us 31 overs to get 205 and just missed out by 5 runs – needing 12 off the last over – well done to Smokey Dawson with 57, Amir 42 and Michael Banner 36. A fabulous comeback that showed a lot of character.

A2 9/237 defeated CHRSL 179. A comfortable win in a game we always had under control. Our best bowlers were Nick Bennett with 4 and Steve Quanborough 2 wickets. We are now well placed to consolidate a spot in the top 4 – well done fellas.

Colts Vs 160 and 5/187defeated Hornsby 79 and 5/112 – Stars with the bat last week were Nick Bennett with 77* with Dylan Brogan 4/18 and Mark Bennett 3/22 tearing apart the Hornsby batting. Day 2 we tried but just missed out on the 10 points. Stars with the bat were Taylor Paton with 68* and Tim Scoular 32. Bowling honours went to Dylan Brogan 4/18 and mark Bennett 3/22.

B1 Blue 279 drew with Mt Colah 8/230. We did everything we could to win this one with Andrew Joyce 4/41, Ryan Cherrie 2/49 almost getting us there. One of those games where the best side probably didn’t win with ‘interesting’ umpiring decisions and some other issues that will be worked through with the Association. We may well win this one after the event but a good effort against the odds. A correction from last week also – Rowan Keating scored a very good 71 rather than Alistair Rayment – our star bowler.

B1 Red 151 and 75 lost to St Ives 7/164. Don't have a lot of details just yet other than Dom Bourke top scoring with 34 in the first innings and not a lot happening in the 2nd dig. In the bowling Marc Carnerio did the damage with 3/47.

C1 White 197 lost to CHRSL White 7/199. We were only going to lose this game with a team that could play in the air due to the slow outfield – this happened. While we took regular wickets they were always just in front. Super effort from John Steel with 2/47 from 17 overs, Geoff Starr and Sahil both with 2 wickets. With our full team returning next match we will back to full strength and should get back to the winning list. Super effort also from Kishore who took his 250th for our Club – a great effort mate – now to bring up the 4,000 runs.

C1 Red 232 defeated Galston-Glenorie 213. A game we made it much tougher to win than we should have. Fabulous bowling from Geoff Starr (3/46), James McBrien 2/26 and Mark Bell 2/26 got us home. After good batting and bowling with a slippery ball our fielding was not up to it today but this can be improved on. Despite the fielding and conditions we got the points – a sign of a very good side that will be up there at the end.

C2 7/194 defeated Mt Colah 190. After struggling to be 5/62 we were on the brink. Enter Peter Lees 39 and Isaac Malamel with 62* backed up by a good 20* by Dave Gane and we got there. These are the games that show what it takes to win a Premiership. Well done to the lads who have come back from the brink a couple of times to retain their 1st place. Super effort fella’s.

D2 145 and 1/70 lost to Hornsby 6/271. After having them 4/37 overnight our chances were snuffed out with 130 run 5th wicket partnership. Left with over 2 hours to bat through the day we put up one of our best efforts in the top order. Good work by Ben Pilipowski with 28* and Roger Friend 19 who showed what the lads are capable of doing.

With Friends like this
We are a well connected bunch. If you haven’t looked at the Photo Gallery section of the website recently have a look at the ‘Who’s Who’ of the Club and who they associate with outside cricket. The latest photo of John Mitchell (slide 1), Greg Fiedler (slides 2 and 3) and Raj Babla (U11 Coach) – slide 28 and 29.

Federal Election
With another election over and done with it is worth remembering that John Howard is a West Penno Player who played for us 1962/63 and 1969/70 – scoring 264 runs at 9.8 in A2 to C2 grades. One of the memorable incidents occurred in an A2 match where he “misjudged a high catch at Headen Park (Southern end) and ended up in a blackberry bush. He had to be extricated.”

A record double.
Last weekend Nick Bennett did a first in the Association. After rule changes this year allowed players to play in 2 grades on the same weekend (Saturday and Sunday games) Nick not only played for A2 but also Colts. On Saturday he scored 60* and 77* the next day. So Nick not only becomes our first player to back up but also became the first player in the Association to get back to back 50’s. Great effort mate.
