Seniors

A1 196 defeated Berowra 169. A very big result against one of the top batting sides. Last match we lost in the death with a big last wicket partnership. This one we set up with a record last wicket partnership between Simon Smyth and Peter Stott. We bowled well of a deck that offered just enough. Adam Walter took 3/36, Peter Stott 3/27 (18 overs) and Simon Smyth 1/25. We needed something special on Saturday and did it taking 8/68. Great performance by both Simon (200 career wickets) and Adam Walter (100) who achieved their personal milestones in style. A very important win to keep us in touch. Well done fellas.

A2 146 lost to Kenthurst 4/161. Not a great day. Kenthurst did this one relatively easily. Scott Henderson again bowled brilliant, being denied wickets with drop catches... the story of his bowling all season so far! Matt Jobbo also bowled well with 2/24 but just didn't have enough runs to play with!

Colts 3/296 defeated Berowra 286. An unbelievable result especially after bouncing back from an outright loss the week before! To make it even more interesting we were1/0 after 3 balls. How about this for records: Taylor Paton scored our 329th century and Nic Bennett’s 103* was our 330th ton. The 4th wicket partnership of 183 unbroken is a Club and Association record in Colts, it is also the 2nd best 4th wicket partnership for any Grade for our Club coming second only to the 223 scored by Glenn Percival and Simon Davies (A1) in 2002/03. Where do the superlatives end fella’s. .

B1 Blue 5/249 defeated Glenhaven 247. At last this powerful has stirred with a bang with a powerful batting exhibition. Dan Moye fired back into runs with 101* - our 328th century. Back this up with a typically rapid 73 from Iain Ryan and 41 from Andrew McKinnon and the result was ours. Another highlight was a 133 4th wicket partnership between Dan and Iain.

B1 Red 111 lost to Mt Colah 6/340 – we were belted by a team that is probably playing a couple of Grades below their ability. They batted on and got an imposing total. Marc Carnerio 3/67 was our most successful bowler. In the batting, Gav Hassett 23, and Alex Connell 23 were our best. This team will be there in the big end of season games but just a tough day at the office this match.

C1 White 250 defeated Galston-Glenorie 189. Back into the winners list after a blip last match. We always had this match in hand with wickets falling regularly. Despite having 2 bowlers out, John Steel stepped up to take 4/36. He was well supported with Ben McNamara 2/36, John Mitchell 2/41 and Kishore 2/27 contributing. Spare a thought for Kishore who is still sitting on 249 career wickets after a couple of missed chances.

C1 Red 140 and 4/113 defeated Kissing Point 137 and 5/140 declared. What a game – the 1st in C1 for this team promoted from C3. Needing another 22 to win at the start of play, we lost 2 quick wickets but a great last wicket partnership of 20 between Ben (23*) and Cam saw us scrape through - just. After blazing to 5/140dec we needed 138 to win. After losing both openers to goldens we staggered to 4/18. However, a wonderful 95 run partnership between Nigel Moore (12*) and Daniel Brain (71*) saw us home. Well done fella’s.

C2 6/199 and 1/23 defeated outright Kissing Point 79 and 141. Another comprehensive win to consolidate 1st place. Dave Gane 4/33 and Faisal 3/23 blasted through the batting and the runs needed to get outright points were achieved easily. This Team has a lot of self confidence and are going to be right up there in the big games.

D2 82 and 7/80 lost to Galston-Glenorie 274. An expected loss against a very strong opposition but still a morale boosting performance staving off the outright with a day of gritty defensive batting that payed off in the long run. Notable performances: Bruce Caldwell top scoring with 36 from two hours at the crease in our first innings, Roger Friend carrying his bat in an innings of almost three hours to be 15 not out, and Ben Pilipowski top scoring with 18 in our second innings. A lot of courage fella’s – well done.

One for the records
Not all the records we track are for cricket. How about this one. James Fiedler’s (A2) great grandfather (Chook Fraser) is a famous Rugby League player of generations past. Up until the recent Australia/New Zealand Test match he was the youngest ever Australia representative. When Isreal Folau took the field this wonderful record was broken.

Who is Ron Jeremy?
Not sure about Dave Meizis (C1) who commented that Ben McNamara was spending more time laying down (in the field) than Ron Jeremy. Again, not sure who Ron Jeremy is but we hope there is nothing personal building between Dave and Ben – I am sure they are ‘just good friends’ and nothing more.

Strange going’s on
In the D2 game at Fred Caterson No 4 not all the action was out in the middle. During the course of the afternoon some odd occurrences were observed on the sidelines: One WPHC player was overheard saying to another, "after the game I must show you my thigh, there's a really big swelling down there" (ahem!!). Another player old enough to remember that notorious incident involving Ian Chappell, was seen to drop his dacks not once but twice in sight of a group of attractive young female spectators. His explanation: he had never worn a thigh pad before and had discovered that he had put it on upside down (well, that's what he claimed anyway). Finally, another senior player was seen emerging from the Ladies amenities sporting a pair of dark glasses. When questioned about this afterwards he maintained that he had gone in there in search of a roll of toilet paper (a likely story!). Steady on, fellas!

Just on records
Simon Smyth (A1 Captain) is a quiet achiever. On the weekend, while A1 fought their way to 196 obsecured in this result was a 72 run last wicket record. Not only is this an A1, WPHC 10th wicket record but Simon now holds two A1 batting partnership records. The other one is the current Club A2 8th wicket record of 104 set in 2002/03 with Andrew Driscoll. Well done to one of our quiet achievers who also took his 200th career wicket!

From an ‘old’ friend
Got this email from Tim Connell (recently ‘retired’ B1 legend). As background, Tim recently got a plum job as a journalist for the Great Lakes Advocate. For the record, ‘Fat Head’ is Tim’s brother Alex and James Mielnik plays B1.

“At ten to five on Friday afternoon, the last thing on my wish-list was a visit from one of the Fairfax directors. I was introduced by the Manager of my newspaper (Great Lakes Advocate, www.forster.yourguide.com.au/home.asp) and the senior gentleman looked over gold glasses rims and down at me. I'm not so sure he was impressed

"Make sure you do a good job, young man. I started out on this paper myself."

"Um yes, of course. I mean, I'll do my best," I got out, squirming.

They had just left the room when my mobile phone rang, making me jump. "Hello," I squeaked. "Ah yes, is that Mr Connell?," said the voice down the other end. It was a neutral voice that suggested its source was a clerk in an office somewhere, bringing up records on a computer screen.

"I am from the Commonwealth Bank. It seems that, unfortunately, we have a problem with your account. Our records show that your account has been used to make a large number of transactions involving pornographic material."

"Really?" My mind was frantically scanning itself for any downloads that might have pushed me over some limit.

"Yes. And I'm afraid we've traced the source of the transactions to your work computer. Unfortunately we've already had to inform your employer."

Oh.

"Connell. It's Jim Mielnik, you dickhead. What's Fathead's number?"

I guess that even if you move three hours away, some things never change.”
