Congratulations to Jack Goggin (U14 Red) who has won a gift voucher for $204.25 – the full value of his purchase.

Girls
Competition starts on Saturday 13th October running through to the 15th December. Games then re-commence on the 2nd February until 1st March with Semi Finals / Finals played over 8th and 15th March 2008. This gives us 14 weeks of competition plus finals.

Junior boys
Day 1 of Round 3 resumed on Saturday - major scores will be updated as they come to hand.

Seniors
A1 244 lost to Normanhurst-Warrawee 9/249. One of those games – we had them on the ropes at 9/205 but they got away with it. Our fielding is usually very good but when 8 chances are missed (7 catches) this goes a long way to explaining why we missed out. In the bowling Adam Walter with 4, Peter Stott 3 wickets were the best. Amir and Smokey Dawson with one each also contributed.

A2 4/230 defeated Kissing Point 225. Three out of three wins and the boys are doing it comfortably. James Makin was in the runs yet again with 70 (retired hurt), James Fiedler 53* and Ronan Barrett 41 did the job without fuss. Fingers crossed for James who copped a knock on the fingers while batting – he has already scored 179 runs in 3 digs! Well done fellas.

Colts 138 lost outright to Kenthurst 212. We got smashed.... after wasting a good opportunity last week on a hard suface, to be bowled out for 138. Fridays rain made batting far more difficult yesterday, and Kenthurst wobbled their way to 212 - we gave them 50 extras!! Subsequently we were bolwed out for just 68 runs. A huge defeat - marred by too many extras and too many missed opportunities. Back to Storey next week to turn it around!

B1 Blue 206 defeated St Ives 125. Enter the U16’s who filled in and starred with the bat. In their debut seniors matches Sam Croft (41), Daniel Brain (32) and Steve Muller (14) were fantastic. We finished the job off with our bowling – Alistair Rayment 4/14 from 6 overs, Andrew Joyce (2/23) and Rowan Keating 1/25 were outstanding. Good to see this talented team get back into winning mode.

B1 Red 225 lost to Normanhurst-Warrawee 7/229. The one that got away. We had them on the ropes at 7/153 but just couldn’t finish it off. James Mielnik bowled a marathon 21 overs to take 2/58 from 21, Tim Connell in his last game took 2/68, and Dom Burke 1/19. We will bounce back from this one easily.

C1 189 and 2/83 lost to Ku-ring-gai Chase 258. A much better day compared to the latter half of last week. Resuming at 3/120 we cleaned them up for a score we should have exceeded with our batting last week. Kishore yet again got the wickets (3/52) with 1 each to Andrew Watt, Ben McNamara, Senthu and John Mitchell. In our 2nd Innings John Mitchell 30*, Michael McDowell 23 and Ross A 17 did well against some hostile opening bowling. While not a good result this is nothing more than a blip.

C2 262 defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee 228. They never looked like reaching the target and went into defensive mode from the time lost their 3rd wicket – even ignoring easy singles. We managed to get to the new ball with 6 overs remaining. An inspired spell of bowling with the 2nd new ball by Isaac Malamel saw the last 3 wickets falling in 2 overs with the last wicket being captured with the 5th last ball of the game. The standout bowling performers were Chris Williamson (4/25) and Isaac M (4/42) with good support by the other bowlers. Let’s not forget Richie Cuskelly with 51* in the first innings. This is a talented team which is already making an impact.

C3 2/68 Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee 157 – day 2 results to follow but a likely win.

D2 139 lost to Normanhurst-Warrawee 198 and 3/114. A disappointing ending to a match that looked to have some life in it at stumps with us 2/71. After the loss of Jon Van Blerk for 45, we struggled. Roger showed real determination for his 22 but just not enough. A major event happened in the 2nd innings for Normo – P K Westerberg claimed his first wicket in club cricket – his 76th match – a great result from one of our fabulous Clubmen. Well done mate!!!!

Farewell?
It is always sad to see any of our West Penno ‘family’ leave the Club or retire but this week we have 3 very special people pull stumps:

Greg Fiedler (A2)
Due to heavy work and kids sporting commitments in Greg’s words he has “...put the cue in the rack". Greg first played in 1981/82, made his debut in A1 Grade and stayed there for the next 21 years becoming our most capped A1 Grader, most capped A Grade Captain and one of the top 2 run scorers in our Club’s history with over 6,000 runs – one of our undisputed Greats. Once external commitments ease off we may well see the ‘old fella’ return as the old saying goes “you are a long time retired”. In the meantime big fella, ‘thanks for the memories’.

Tim Connell
Tim (B1) is leaving us to take up a job as a journalist with The Great Lakes Advocate. This is a great job in a fabulous area. Tim made his debut in 2000/01 and has since taken over 200 wickets and scored over 1,000 runs. One of the good guys in our Club and a great Team man. Another ‘retiree’ who may well find his way back after a few years.

Phil Hando (C2 last year)
Phil Hando is a relative newcomer who starting playing Seniors in 2005-06 but he was involved heavily with the Kanga’s as a parent but even more importantly as a Volunteer. Phil goes to South Africa for 3 years with his employer and our best wishes are with you.

The big one
James Makin (A2 Captain) just quietly achieved a huge personal milestone on the weekend – scoring his 3,000th run for West Penno. This puts him in 27th position and closing on some may big names in the Club’s history – great effort mate. He is also only 15 wickets of 350 wickets!

Merv returns
Dale ‘Merv’ Armstrong is a genuine legend in West Penno. The big fella (retired in 2000/01) now lives in Tasmania is a dead-set double to Merv Hughes. He has even been mistaken for Merv by the real Merv's ex-Victorian team mates (Darren Berry) at a match in Tasmania and has done it again. He was with Greg Fiedler (just good friends) in the West Indies earlier this year to see the World Cup. Along comes former West Indies great Desmond Haynes who comes up to Merv to talk about old times. Keep it going Merv.

Peter Westerberg – on fire
How about Peter Westerberg – D2 star. After hitting his first ever 6 earlier this year he backs it up with his first ever wicket. After 76 matches, and 9 overs he now has an average – won’t mention what it is to protect the innocent. Some facts about this achievement:
• Peter dismissed the Opener and & top scorer, Henry Liang for 39
• According to Peter ‘In fairness to the batsman, he had only recently returned to the crease, having suffered a concussion and was probably not batting at all well at the time’
• When coming on to bowl P.K.W. was heard to warn the scorers to sharpen their pencils - timely advice, as it proved!).

Was he there?
Got to hand it to Gav Taylor (A1 emerging super star) who we think played in the A1 game on the weekend. When asked about the result Gav replied “I don’t know any details. I’m oblivious. We just got done’ the scorebook says he played but don’t know what this King’s school education is achieving Peter (his dad).

Attack of the birds
Jaskaran ‘Magpie’ Singh (C2) is starting to make a play for a ‘headline grabber’ with his latest effort. The young fella doesn’t like birds – Magpies in fact. Fielding near to a placid feathered friend he asked Captain Peter Lees to move him to the other side of the field and have some else field near this fearsome predator. Somehow we think ‘Magpie’ might stick as a nickname.

What you do in your private life
Another C2 classic – this time from Richie Cuskelly. While trying to encourage the opening bowler to get back on track out came the quote "Find your rhythm mate, just like you did last night" This follows the pair doing intimate synchronised stretches on the ground next to each other before a ball was bowled. We are sure it must have been a memorable experience last night fella’s.

Probably worth locking this into your favourites and checking after each game for the standings.
