West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club Est. 1930

Round 1, 16th September 2007

News from Round 1 follows after our delayed start to the season.

AFL Recreational Football Comp
A long time ago, Aussie Rules was started to keep cricketers fit during winter. There is now an AFL Recreational Comp played during summer to get people even fitter. Games are non contact, played mid week, are non contact and teams are mixed.

Think about getting a West Penno team or two together to give this a go. Sounds like a lot of fun so if you want to know more – just give Simon Smyth a call on 0401 932 535.

Level 1 Training
More detailed information is below but if you are interested in becoming a fully qualified Coach, Cricket NSW is running a fully accredited programme at Edward Bennett Oval on the 11th and 25th November. If you are coaching a WPH side or intend to coach we will cover the $120 cost. There are only 8 spots left (15 already registered) so if interested then think about moving quickly or you might miss out. More details are below.

Kanga’s
So far we have registered just on 100 children – another excellent turnout. We have a ground capacity of 120 and these spots will fill up quickly so if you are thinking of playing then please let us know – contacts are on the Website under ‘Contacts’.

Girls
Competition starts on Saturday 13th October running through to the 15th December. Games then recommence on the 2nd February until 1st March with Semi Finals / Finals played over 8th and 15th March 2008. This gives us 14 weeks of competition plus finals.

Junior boys
All games were played as 1-dayers. Results are not yet to hand but highlights will be updated when they are to hand.

Seniors
It is always good to see the start of the season – the sun shining, Tony Hadley making the traditional trip across from Perth to play and some good wins - 6 out of 7 games! Here we go with the results – all 35 over games after last week’s washout:

A1 Vs Hornsby – starts 22/9

A2 4/192 defeated Berowra 86. A fantastic start to the season from last year’s Premiers. James Makin starred with 84 but got good support from Ronan Barratt (50) and Tim Rae (20). In the bowling, we demolished them with Matt Jobbo taking 3/18 and Brad Hingle 2/10. A powerful start for a team after a back to back Premiership. Keep a watch on this Makin fell a- he is now only 95 runs off 3,000 career runs and 18 off 350 wickets – wow!

Colts Vs Hornsby – starts 22/9

B1 Blue 4/96 defeated Mt Colah 9/95. Another big win with Nathan Orton 40 and Scott Jobson 31. The bowling is where we did the real damage with Rowan Keating 3/7 and Andrew Joyce 3/13 were outstanding.

B1 Red 7/162 defeated St Ives 9/151. Another close one set up by some great batting by Peter Taylor 74*. We had to bowl well against St Ives and we did. Tim Connell did the job as he always does with 4 wickets and was backed up by Marc Carnerio with 2 and Chris Collits 2/23. Well done fella’s.

C1 3/176 defeated Hornsby 7/168. While the score looked close we were always in control of this game. In the batting Ross A scored a good 61* with very good backup from Tony Hadley 42* and John Steel 20. We also bowled well with wickets well spread between Andrew Watt (2/16), Ben McNamarra (2/36), Senthu Paramaguru (2/14) and Kishore (1/14). This team will go a long way with good depth and good fielding.

C2 6/244 defeated Hornsby 232 – 476 runs scored in 70 overs – almost 20/20 stuff. Batting first we belted a big score with Peter Heidegger 55, Steve Baker 40 and Peter Lees 36* setting a good platform. In what should have been an imposing target we had a few shocks. Jacques Visser was the star bowler with 2 wickest bringing up his career 50 - wel done mate. A good start to the season from a side with fantastic batting strength.

C3 9/208 defeated Hornsby 8/123. A powerful win by our D2 Premiers from last season. Well done to Geoff Starr for his 104* (our 325th Club Century and first of the season) – well done mate. Good work from David Creais 24 in his first match for the Seniors. Our bowlers were outstanding with Tim Starr 3 wickets with the others spread. These boys will give the Premiership a real shake.

D2 98 lost to Hornsby 8/106. The one that got away from us. Defending a low score we had them 8/64 until a couple of dropped catches and a later order charge. Ben Pilipowski got has career best score of 31 with Peter Lees making a well anticipated comeback with 20. Our bowlers did well Bran Ramachandran 3/38, Kedar Ballurkar 2 and Brad Close 2 wickets all but getting us across the line.

A special moment
How about Peter Westerberg – long term player in D2 who on Saturday scaled his own mountain. Not only did he hit a career highest score of 9* but…he hit his first ever 6. Peter Lees relieves the moment: “He didn't realise (too busy running) & wondered why I was cheering so hard. His response: "oh you must be kidding!” ”.
What Peter didn’t say was that Peter W also took out the batsman (Shankar) at the other end in his excitement while charging down the track. Well done Peter.

Sorry Hadley
In one of those on-field discussions in which names are not mentioned (what happens on the field stays on the field), a senior player recalled a match last year when Tony left his Mothers wedding reception in Perth early to be able to get up early to fly to Sydney and managed to get the name of the restaurant mixed up by calling it the Lonely Hag (the name is actually The Lonely Shag)– apologies Sir Richard –nothing against your dear mum – I think.

The Penny drops
Got to handle it to Alec Connell (B1 Red). After smashing a 4 first ball he was bowled the next ball. Thirty minutes later he comes out with a quotable quote –‘I didn’t move my feet’ – the penny had dropped.
