Round 14, Day 1 (24th February 2007)
Kanga Dads game
The match was played last Sunday and it was a fun day. The Report prepared by Ben Frawley follows:
“A great day was had by all involved with the West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club raising $700.00. This is the 3rd year the WPHC Kanga Dads (fathers of the U6 - U8 cricketers) have challenged the Seniors (regular Saturday players), and the 2nd year it has been in support of HeartKids. So far the honours had been evenly shared.
Kanga Dads got off to a great start with a wicket on the first ball of the day, but other than one of the Kanga Dads, Nigel Blow, being too fast for some players, they were not able to garner a win from any of the 4 games. The seniors had too much firepower this year with the closest game being decided by only 4 runs.
Congratulations to Nigel Blow, as all round cricketer of the day, and special mention to Daniel Anderson and Daniel Junkari, two young boys who have a fine future ahead. They acquitted themselves admirably against the adults. James McBrien was the highlight of the day with his brilliant diving outfield catch. The biggest six of the day was credited to Amir Marzouk - was aiming for the houses but just fell short.
Special thanks to George's Fine Meats of Cherrybrook and the cricket club providing beverages. West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club is proud to be involved with raising money for this excellent charity, HeartKids, and hope it continues into the future.”

Seniors
Weekend games Day 1, Round 14 was played on Saturday. Results were affected by storms and lightning of varied intensity around the Shire. Results are:
A1 155 Vs Normanhurst 0/0. This game was for fun – we will come 5th win lose or draw. After talking up his ability as an opening batsman tearaway quick Matt Spalding opened the batting with Michael McGregor (58) and scored 20 – a partnership of 50. Apart fro this highlight it was a shortened day due to rain and lightning.
A2 Vs Berowra 8/171. A Semi Final preview with the winner going into 2nd spot for another chance to play each other in the Semi’s next week. While a good result, nothing spectacular in the bowling with wickets well spread. Keep it going boys.
Colts 4/56 defeated Hornsby 46 – a devastating opening bowling performance by Mark Bonnichsen 5-20 and Dylan Brogan 3-18 tore the heart out of Hornsby as we dismissed them inside 90 minutes. In reply we are 4-56 before the weather closed in. A good tune up for the Semi`s.
B1 Blue Vs Kenthurst 9/79. A remarkable turnaround by the lads playing 1st placed Kenthurst. Don’t have any specific scores but some major damage has been done by the bowling.
B1 Red 130 Vs Kissing Point 0/15. One of those days with rain and lightning interruptions combined with an off day. This game is more about getting psychological advantage going into the Semi’s where these teams play again in 2 weeks. Eric Junkkari was the best batsman with 27 with young fill-in, Daniel Brain 24*. Let’s not read too much into this score.
B2 Vs ARL 141. We are very well placed wickets well spread. Justin Paterson and Ben Nolan both took 3 wickets but with the highlight being Tim Connell finally getting the wicket to bring up his career 200 – well done mate. We should win comfortably and guarantee a 1st place position.
C1 7/214 Vs Glenhaven. A big match for us against 2nd placed Glenhaven with us 1 point out of the top 4. Like most games we were rain and lightning affected but we stayed at a ground that had no cover and this was a very good decision. At the break we were 5/114 but then put on 100 for the loss of 2 wickets – a really important final session in light rain. With depth in the batting we lost John Nesbitt Kishore and Nathan for low scores (something unusual) but others chipped in – Tony Hadley was brilliant for his 59, Chris Collits smashed 36, John Mitchell 34, Bryce is 27* and Ross A 20 have put us in a position to bowl at a competitive target next week. As mentioned before, if we can get into the top 4 this team will give the comp a real shake.
C2 Vs Ku-ring-gai Chase – scores to come.
C3 53 lost to Galston-Glenorie 2/178 – not a good day at the office. Batting was slow with only 53 scored in 42 overs and then they got away to a flyer in 30 overs. Looks like a bit of work to do next Saturday to save an outright.
D2 Vs Normanhurst 5/115. This is yet another game that will be replayed in the Semi’s where we should come 2nd. Normanhurst won the toss and elected to bat, reaching 5 for 115 when bad weather stopped play at 3.15 p.m. Mark Bell was the best of our bowlers, taking 3 for 8 off six overs.
Dean Jones revisited
How about this story of toughness on Nick Bennett, relayed by Colts Captain Greg Fiedler:
“At the first drinks break during our run chase Nick was 50 n.o and was seen out the back of Kenthurst dressing rooms being very ill from heat exhaustion. While I suggested he retire, he insisted on batting on, and literally teed off in Dean Jones-“Calcutta fashion” moving from 50 to 97 in about 40 mins before unsuccessfully trying to bring up his maiden 100 with a six. What very few at the ground knew before Nick went out to bat is that the doctor diagnosed him with a chipped sternum during the week from a football incident and should not have played. When I asked what were the repercussions of playing he just said “avoid being hit in the chest or it will break”………-what young blokes will do to get on the field.”
Watch those blisters
Peter Westerberg (D2) is one of the ‘colourful cricketing identities’ in our great Club. At the weekend, Peter finally revealed a reason for a recent run of low scores – blisters – on the hands. Allegedly caused by rowing we think he might be boasting.
Sorry, for bowling
While on Peter Westerberg, he has now outdone Bryce Morley for “Sorry’s”. About to start his bowling in the Kanga dads game Vs Seniors, Peter apologised to the batsman, before he bowled a ball “I apologise for what is about to follow”. He had good reason to apologise, taking out Club Icon John Coulthard who stretched a back muscle trying to reach one of his deliveries.
Team Man of the Year
Tony Hadley gets lots of coverage simply because he is Tony ‘the walking headline’ Hadley. How about this one from yesterday. Tony had to leave the game at 5.00pm to travel back to Perth before returning again next week to play week 2. At the rain break Tony was a few not out with teams considering whether or not to stay or go - at a ground (Gilroy) with no cover. Tony made the decision easy, he got on the ‘phone and changed his flight to leave on Sunday morning despite there being no guarantee we would even get back on. Why? He didn’t want to let the team down and also give us every chance of winning. Tony went on to make 59, batting at the eventual resumption in light rain. You don’t have to look much further than Tony’s attitude to see why the C1 team is the form Team in the C1 competiton and with D2, the Club - inspirational stuff mate.
