Round 13, Day 1 (10th February 2007)
Allan Border Medal winner
As predicted last week, WPHC is now the home Club of our first Allan Border winner – Lisa Sthalekar, the Australian Women’s Vice Captain and a Junior with our Club from U10 to U16’s. Go Lisa. Well done Lisa, we are proud of you.
Kanga Dads game
The big game kicks off next weekend at Campbell Park – 10.00am. Seniors Teams are being arranged this week with the Kanga team already selected and in training. Will let you know how this goes, plus photo’s after the game.
Fees
With the season fast approaching a conclusion we still have some folks with fees outstanding. We are finalising the outstandings now but your assistance in paying your Captain if you are in this position would be appreciated. Fees are $230 for seniors and $180 for Schoolboys. If you started late in the season the cost is a simple pro-rata.
Girls update
The Girl’s restart their season next weekend.
Juniors
Competition started up again last Saturday after a long break over Christmas/New Year. While our teams have performed well there are no outstanding individual achievements from day 1 – let’s see if this changes this weekend.

U13 – Blue 3rd, White 4th, Red 8th
U12 – Gold 2nd, Blue 7th, White 9th, Green 13th
U11 – Blue 1st, Green 3rd, White 4th, Red 8th
No competition for U9 and U10s.
Seniors
A1 191 Vs ARL 3/47. A really good day 1 against the clear-out competition leaders. In the batting, Smokey Dawson was the star with 74 with Amir Marzouk 30 odd and Simon Smyth 29 also doing well. In the bowling, Amir has backed up again with 2/16. Great stuff fellas.
A2 170 Vs Kenthurst 2/100. An important game against 5th placed Kenthurst who are 6 points behind us. Chopper Boon top scored with 50 but not a lot after that. A bit of work to do here. As long as we win 1 of our last 2 games we are safely in the top 4.
Colts 0-26 Vs Kenthurst 165. A great effort by the boys to restrict 2nd place Kenthurst to 165-but it could have been better as we put down 5 catches. Rohan Dixit bowled an excellent spell 3-45 of 14 overs and Nick Bennett bowled a tight spell of off-spin 2-9 off 9 overs. A win here will book a spot into the Semi’s.
B1 Blue 233 Vs St Ives 5/66. With the boys out of Semi’s contention they found the answer to their batting consistency – reversed the batting order. Ryan Cherrie (our normal number 11) scored 47, Simon Joyce 43, and Glenn O’Connor 46. We then king hit St Ives with some great bowling from Alistair Rayment (2/15) and Andrew Joyce. Should be a comfortable win coming up – well done folks.
B1 Red 279 Vs Normanhurst – a welcome return to form after a few wobbles in recent games. Nathan Orton continues to deliver with 76. Peter Taylor (37) and Eric Junkkari put on the finishing touches with a 54, 9th wicket partnership. Well done fella’s.
B2 1/15 Vs Nth Wahroonga 268. A big score but well within reach of this team. Justin Paterson was our standout bowler with 5/61. A win here would all but set us up for a minor premiership.
C1 304 Vs Normanhurst 0/6. The roll continues with another powerhouse performance against a very good bowling side. Everyone contributed but with John Nesbitt (87), Nathan Farther (49), John Mitchell 34 doing a great job. We just have to keep winning to make up for an up and down start to the year. Still a show of coming 4th and if we make it watch us fly.
C2 204 Vs Kissing Point 3/24 – after a recent lean trot looks like the boys are firing back into contention. Great to see Des Carnerio with 88 scoring runs again. Roland Flanagan has been the destroyer with 3/8.
C3 2/57 Vs Glenhaven 262 – whilesomeway to go we have a good base to bring this one home.
D2 7/117 defeated Hornsby 59. A big game against 5th placed Hornsby who are just behind us. Batting first they only lasted 35 overs. In reply WPHC are 7 for 117 at stumps. Our day was made by two great performances: Geoff Starr, bowled 7 overs, taking 3 for 3 and then scored 33. Matt Thomas, bowled 6 overs, taking 4 for 8 and top scoring for us with a great innings of 36. This is a talented team that deserves the chance to play in the Semi’s – keep it going fella’s.
Representative stars
We have a number of players, at all levels, representing the Association – a fantastic achievement. Just to highlight some special achievements. Our Telegraph Shield (U23) team had a hard fought Semi final win over Sutherland last week. Matt Spalding (A1) with 4/72 and Nathan Orton (A2) with 5/57) were outstanding – well done fella’s, now for the big one.
Hollywood on a roll
Hollywood Leyshon (A2) is making a real play to push his credentials as ‘Personality of the Year’. During the week, Hollywood won a dinner for 2 (valued $300) after winning a Triple M phone in contest. He has already won and MP3 and Pearl Jam tickets. His response to the win: “Holy cow”. Next challenge is who to bring along to the dinner. Reckon we have found the person – none other than our own Bryce Morley who was overheard to comment that he thought the legendary Tony Hadley was a “very good looking man”.
A love story – Chopper Boon, the sequel
We have a rich history with love stories in WPHC – most have ended less than romantically. One of the enduring is Chopper Boon’s (A2 star) search. A brief background – when Chopper, was in Year 10 he found, at the time, the love of his life. He hired a helicopter ($210 is big money way back then for a 16 year old) filled it with red roses and when she came out to see the racket the roses were dropped on her. After recovering from multiple scratches and psychiatric support after having a helicopter hovering over the house the romance blossomed – for a while – hence the legend of Chopper.
The sequel
Like a developing Star Wars series - 'The Sequel'. Chopper has now gone national looking for Miss Right. Taking out an ad in ‘Who Weekly’ last week the big fella had a photograph of himself holding a sign “Vez, will you marry me” right next to the crossword so that she (we are assured that Vez is in fact a lady, had to ask the question, and very attractive at that) would find the photo. Despite great planning Vez apparently did not see the ad. So Chopper was a little bit unsubtle “just read page 43”. After ‘tears of joy’ Vez is reported to have asked “what does this mean”. To find out, the answer appears in next week’s edition of Who Weekly.
Other Love Stories include Simon Smyth’s (A1) former girlfriend riding to games on horseback to see her man.
They do exist
We have tried to make this a Tony Hadley and Bryce Morley free section for a while but they just keep delivering. So…to prove that these folks really do exist, just go to the Photo Gallery on the website and have a look at these evolving legends.
Bryce was at it again yesterday. Casting an eye over the very talented C1 top order Bryce made the considered comment “This is a very mature batting order. Tony Hadley is the baby and he is 38” Thanks Bryce, we think what you were saying is that they are a bunch of ‘old bastards’.
Points table
While the points table is available team by team through the DCA website http://www.cricketnsw.com.au/hkhdca/ the summary position follows:
