Weekend games
Round 9, our first game back in 2007 is all done and dusted this weekend. Results are:

A1 5/148 defeated St Ives 146. A good way to start 2007 with a win against higher placed St Ives that now puts us into 5th place. Peter Stott starred with the ball taking 4/31 against his old Club with big Matt Spalding 2/9 from 8 overs. Batting, we were struggling early at 4/40 but ended up cruising it in with Michael McGregor 53* and Smokey Dawson 42 doing the job. Still a way out of the top 4 but we are still a chance.
A2 61 lost to Kenthurst 7/154. No problem with the bowling with Sean Doohan 3 wickets and some good fielding kept 2nd placed Kenthurst to a gettable score. Batting after 40 overs in the heat was a struggle and we collapsed to be all out for 61. We were just out of the top 4 so will need to gain some ground next week.
Colts 5/251 defeated Hornsby 8/187. It finally all clicked with bat and ball. Batting first (winning the toss for the first time all year-well actually they lost the toss Scott Henderson batted superbly for 72, Matt Scoular blasted 50 at better than even time after Fiedler senior (35) and Fiedler junior (28) had put on 70 for the first wicket. It was always going to be too many for Hornsby who were reduced to 3-7 inside the first 3 overs after a fine opening burst by Mark Bonnichsen and Dylan Brogan. Everyone got a trundle as Hornsby limped to 8/187 after their 40 overs. A good result that consolidates us in the top 4.
B1 Red 2/138 defeated Berowra 137. Another powerful game from this talented side. James Mielnik and John Steele both took 3 wickets and left us a moderate score to get on a fast ground. We put on 90 for the first wicket with Nathan Orton and Scott Forbes cruising. James Mielnik then belted 50 with 11 fours. We scored 27 boundaries in the 138. This is probably enough to consolidate our position in the top 4.
B1 Blue 90 lost to St Ives 5/91. At 1/50 we were cruising with Simon Joyce 27 looking good. Then the collapse to be out for 90. They got there 5 down but with Alistair Rayment and Dan Moye both getting 2 wickets.
B2 – no scores through yet – to come.
C1 56 lost to Hornsby 127. Playing one of the top teams we bowled and fielded very well to keep Hornsby to a moderate score on an admittedly very slow Glenhaven. Kishore with 4 wickets starred but was well supported by all the bowlers. In the batting, take out Kishore with 28 and there wasn’t a lot. A combination of batting, very good fielding (the run-out on Tony Hadley was fabulous) and batting after a hot day in the field took its toll. Still a chance to make the top 4 but need to start the running now.
C2 150 (around) defeated Castle Hill RSL 90. A thumping result with good scores from Jeremy Foley and Nigel Blow 38, Phil Hando 29* and Craig Willmott 28 all contributing. In the batting they had no chance. Nigel, in his first game since 1991/92 took 6/15 and congratulations to Jeremy Foley who took 3/28 that included our 32nd Club hat-trick. Well done Jeremy. This win now ensures that we will be in the top 4.
C3 – scores to come.
D2 6/150 lost to Hornsby 8/160. A narrow loss despite a fine, fighting innings of 58 not out from Nigel Moore and a great effort from all of our bowlers, especially Michael Hobern (3 for 32), Geoff Starr (2 for 14) and George Petridis (2 for 27). We are still very well placed in the top 4 so on to next week.

Golden moment
Bill Peterkin, one of our great Clubman is currently the Development Manager for the Gold Coast Titans. Hearing that A1 needed a player with 3 days notice, just before the Christmas game, Bill drove the 900 Km from the Gold Coast to help out. No records on this one but BP could be the only person in Club history to drive 900km to make a golden duck! Well done anyway Bill.

We have records of other major travel commitments to play a game:
+ Greg Fiedler (A1 1987/88) was holidaying with his fiancée in Queensland. Putting the team high on the priority list, he drove down from Queensland on Friday night, played and then returned the next day. Greg eventually married (still is) and has three children
+ Mark Taylor (B1 1998/99) was holidaying on an island off New Caledonia. To play in the Final he caught a charter plane to New Caledonia, flew to Sydney, arriving back on Friday night and played in the semi (scoring 50 runs). After the match he then flew to London
+ Tony Hadley (B2 2005-06) – despite living in Perth with his side definite candidates to make the B2 Final and having only 10 qualified players, the big fella booked a flight, arriving just before the game and then going back to Perth after the game. He did this once before when he arrived from China (to play cricket), arrived at the ground from the airport and then saved the team with 50 runs.

Returning Greats
During the SCG Test we saw 3 of our Test Greats retire. This week we see the return of our own Mark Taylor who sort of retired in 2003-04. Tubs is back and playing Colts to help out during the New Year break. Tubs has scored 5,268 runs (3rd on the all time list) and taken 458 wickets (4th on the all time list) so it will be great to see the stats ticking over once again.

The Man strikes again
Try as we might to make this a Tony Hadley freezone it obviously can’t happen. The Man played this week in C1. Tony had to attend his mothers wedding in Perth on Friday and left the Reception (at the Lonely Shag Restaurant of all places) at 11.30pm. When asked by his mum why he was leaving he explained that he had to play a game of cricket, "in Sydney”. Tony was up at 4.15am, caught the 5.50am flight (after the flight had been closed) and made it by cab from the Airport to Glenhaven 5 minutes before the start. He has already made the effort to get from China in time for a big game. All that and he was run-out brilliantly after 4 balls.

Character building
Craig Willmott showed his Captaincy material in the C2 game on the weekend and Jeremy Foley is very grateful. After being hammered for 21 (a record number of runs scored off an over by a WPHC C2 grade bowler) Craig said to keep bowling as it “was character building”. Jeremy then bowled the next over and took a hat-trick in the next over – our 32nd in Club history.

One of those conversations
Knowing that Eric Junkkari is an avid reader of our weekly reports had to include some comments from the aspiring Club great over a few beers: Going to the Test cricket during the week Eric was sitting side-on and commented that he “couldn’t see Brett Lee’s balls” but had no problem seeing Shane Warne’s – like many people.

Game against the SpeedBlitz Blues
Cricket NSW is offering a Club team to play a game against the SpeedBlitz Blues at the Sydney Cricket ground. The Roads and traffic Authority (RTA) is inviting all Clubs to play an online game at www.speedblitz.com . All you need to do is go online and get batting. Up to 12 people can play in a game. The ‘Play as a team’ page has all the information you need to form a team and enter the competition.
