West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club Est. 1930

Round 7, Day 2 (9th December 2006)

Bradman Oval match
What a shame – wet weather has caused the rescheduling of the game but it will now happen early in 2007. Stay tuned. The next big event will be our Kanga Dads game on the 18th Feb. More info will follow on this one.

Girls update
Our Girls continue to do well. The latest results are:
• WPHC 2/112 (J Ridley 26, A Shah 25, T) lost to CHRSL Green 5/113 with A Shah taking 2/7.
• WPHC 2/47 defeated CHRSL White 43.

Juniors
Round 6 day 2 result highlights are now to hand. Major achievements:
• E Kramer (U15 White) belted 155 against Castle Hill White. This is the highest score since Michael Friedrich’s effort of 170 in 1999/2000. Our highest Club score is 182 by Steve Cass 1992/92 in the U12’s
• Our U12 blue side is making a habit of playing close game s. They had another close one on the weekend winning 93 to 92 with the opposition (another WPHC team) losing their last wicket 9 down. What makes this amazing is that this is the 4th game in 2 years with a similar result – the lads winning 3 and losing 1 of these tight games. Well done fellas.

Points table
As at the end of Round 6 the standings are:

U16 – WPHC White 2nd,, Blues 3rd
U15 – Blue 2nd, White =4th, Red 13th
U14 – Blue 2nd, Red 5th, White 9th
U13 – White 2nd, Blue 4th, Red =8th
U12 – Gold 4th, Blue 7th, White 9th , Green 13th
U11 – Blue 3rd, Green 5th, White 6th, Red 10th

No competition for U9 and U10s.

Seniors
Round 7 day 2 started on the weekend. All matches were rain affected so there should be an opportunity to get some points next week with the probability of a lot of draws. Results are:

A1 8/181 defeated Hornsby 178. After having Hornsby 5/158 overnight we stepped up a gear and took the next 5 wickets for 20 runs. Big Matt Spalding starred with 4 wickets. After stumbling a bit with the bat we put on a 73 run 7th wicket partnership between Troy Newman and Peter Stott with 46 got us a cross the line.
Colts 6/161 drew with Normanhurst 175 – Rohan Dixit in his first match back took 5-50 and set the scene. We were given 40 overs to chase this on the Glade(batting 2nd which is always a challenge) and nearly got our first win finishing 14 runs short 6-161. Scott Henderson batted really well for 56 and the Legend got 49 - it is starting to come together for the boys.
A2 210 lost to ARL 5/215 – not a lot of the detail about this match but one we would like to have won against a lower placed side.
B1 Red 3/170 lost to Kissing Point – it had to happen with the boys losing their first game of the season. The boys aren’t used to losing and with a strong play to be in the Grand Final of ‘Sharp as a bowling ball’ the lads who came back to the Club had no idea of the scores. Virtually eliminated from the memory banks.
B1 Blue 180 lost to Kenthurst – a win here against 2nd placed Kenthurst would have been handy with the start of a new round about to get underway. Rowan Keating was our best with 66.
B2 8/238 defeated ARL 159. Another powerful win with Tim Connell doing it yet again with 5/44 taking his season tally to 30 at the halfway mark! The lads are already 15 points clear in 1st place and just keep doing it.
C1 191 lost to Glenhaven 8/265 – playing equal 4th placed Glenhaven this was an important one but just missed out, losing our last wicket with only 2 and a bit overs to go. Wickets were well spread with Dave Consalvi, Pat Nesbitt, Andrew Watt all getting some action. In the batting, stars were Andrew Watt who played another magic innings of hitting with 47 and Shane Campbell up from the U16’s with 36.
C2 4/45 defeated Ku-ring-gai Chase 18 – scores to follow. Fingers crossed that this ended up as an outright.
C3 WPHC 4/108 Vs Galston Glenorie – scores to follow.
D2 125 lost to Kissing Point 135 – a close one against point who are just behind us on the table. Best for us in the bowling department was Matt Thomas 3 for 25, Geoff Starr 3 for 26 & George Petridis 3 for 34. In the batting, we just fell short but good performances from James McBrien 42, Geoff Starr 26 & Duncan Moore, batting down the order, (13 not out) nearly got us across the line. In the words of Peter Westerberg “Kissing Point deserving winners in this close contest now take second place on the table, but we have their measure & look forward to our next meeting.”

Sharp as a bowling ball – 3 “Doing a great job”
A couple of strong candidates here. The B1 Red boys are standouts. But….C1 Captain Kishore Rampersad is the winner. After getting out and spending time scoring, Kish remarked that Pat was doing a great job umpiring. He probably was but was it was all happening from square leg – both ends and didn’t have any decisions to make.

The Man returns
The Man is back – Tony Hadley. Tony has been in China for the last 12 months or so and is back in Sydney for 6 months so why not grab a game. Why the interest in Tony – simply because he is the most reported player in our history. Apart from having a record 29 runs belted off an over he is famous for some wonderful achievements – just to name a few:
o Turned up to a ground at 6.00am to look at the ground before we played that day
o Has practice sessions with his daughters in the hall before matches
o Runs out star players and then shouts then dinners
o Abuses slightly unfit players (Boney) by calling them “gross”
o Brings an oversized hammock and sets it up (Galston Oval) to a ground with the smallest spectator area
o Arriving at a wet Storey Park turf track at 6.00am making ‘phone calls to get the covers on the wicket with the comment “I don’t want to go down this way” – problem was that the wicket was already a mud heap.
o The B1 game against St Ives was highly charged with the opposition having ‘the odd word to say’. To block out the constant talk Tony applied his own “anti-sledger’. He went out to bat wearing a helmet and head band. Nothing unusual so far but he also had a CD player in his pocket and was wired up to jungle music (his words) at full bore. He was playing this for the first 20 overs and didn’t hear a word on the field (surprising). He just happened to score 59* and set a 3rd wicket B1 record partnership.
o Despite living in Perth with his side definite candidates to make the B2 2005-06 Final and his B2 team only having 10 players, the big fella booked a flight, arriving just before the game and then going back to Perth after the game. He did this once before when he arrived from China (to play cricket), arrived at the ground from the airport and then saved the team with 50 runs.
