Round 7, Day 1 (2nd December 2006)

Bradman Oval match
What a shame – wet weather has caused the rescheduling of the game but it will now happen early in 2007. Stay tuned. The next big event will be our Kanga Dads game on the 18th Feb. More info will follow on this one.

Seniors
Round 7 day 1 started on the weekend. All matches were rain affected so there should be an opportunity to get some points next week with the probability of a lot of draws. Results are:

A1 Vs Hornsby 5/152. After having Hornsby 2/140 we came back strongly to be in a good position before rain came. Matt Spalding got 2 wickets to be the main wickets taker – a solid position.
Colts Vs Normanhurst 5/80 – a solid position before the rain came. With a bit of luck we are in the running for 6 points.
A2 5/171 Vs ARL – another game affected by a storm that finished after 31 overs. But….just a enough time for a Booney special with the big fella getting 118, our 322nd ton and 4th for the Club – more about this later. We will set the agenda next week with a declaration at some stage. So overall a good position.
B1 Red 3/170 Vs Kissing Point – Nathan Orton starred in this shortened game with his first ton – 101* (number 323 for the Club and 11th this season). Well supported by James Mielnik with 31 and another of our outstanding juniors, Daniel Brain with 35* have us well placed to set the agenda next week. A highlight was Nathan getting his ton with a run the last ball before the rain came.
B1 Blue Vs Kenthurst 5/118– another rain affected game. A few wicket early next week will set this up nicely so fingers crossed. Alistair Rayment has done the damage so far with 2 wickets.
B2 5/160 Vs ARL – another good start before the rain. Peter Arnold with 43 and Gav Hassett 44 have done the tough work. An early declaration will give us good shot at taking 1st innings points.
C1 Vs Glenhaven 5/157 – always a big game for us. Just entering the top 4 and playing a team who has scored 350+ in their last 2 games. Once again the bowlers are performing – Andrew Watt, Mark Twohig, Chris Collits and Patrick all getting wickets. We should be able to control the game batting second.
C2 4/45 defeated Ku-ring-gai Chase 18 – playing against a mob with 8 players they folded with super bowling by form bowler Phil Hando with 4 wickets and Sethu with 3 wickets. The record lowest score for a c2 team against a WPH C2 team is 12 by Arcadia way back in 1966/67 so this is a fabulous achievement. Let’s hope the weather hasn’t removed an outright opportunity.
C3 4/108 Vs Galston Glenorie – no clear advantage here with either quick wickets or a declaration on the cards.
D2 Vs Kissing Point 6/78 – an important game for us with Kissing Point, following their outright against Normanhurst last week, sitting just behind us in a very close third place. We got off to a good start today, having them 6 for 27 at one stage. The break in play should favour us. George Petridis, Geoff Starr and Matt Thomas all took two wickets apiece, Ben Pilipowski took two good catches, while all the lads made a great effort in the field.

The storm before the storm
Booney (A2) didn’t have much sleep last night and delivered a Booney special at Greenway. Too tired to do much running he smashed 118 in the A2 game against ARL. Booney hit 7 sixers and 13 fours (94 in boundaries). He had a 100 run partnership with Ranga who scored 12 of them and he brought up his 100 with a 6 to move from 97 to 103. The big fella also took 24 off an over – a record by a WPHC A2 player. Once the big fella scored his ton he remarked “I’m getting tired and will smack them around a bit now’.

Just to finish off a great day, the big fella then accepted $10 from the boys to get the stumps and markers in pouring rain. Welcome back big fella.

Just on fast scoring
We missed a big effort in Round 3 with big scoring by Bruce Poehlsen. Just to match (maybe even outdo Booney) Bruce scored 137 with 8 sixers and 19 fours – 124 in boundaries. Bruce had a 98 run partnership with Dan Moye (no slouch with the bat) and got 90 of them. At one stage we were 5/157 after 19 overs and Bruce had 138 on the runs – amazing hitting.

Sharp as a bowling ball – 3
Got to hand it to Dave Consalvi (Colts and C1). With the storm coming Dave made the incredibly observant comment “It’s getting dark – the traffic lights are on’. Good one Dave – the observation skills are first class.

Gold Coast junket
Nathan Fathers was up in Brisbane last week watching the Test match and tried to get some time to have a beer with Bill Peterkin who is now on the Gold Coast with the Titans. All sorts of reasons were given about Bill’s commitments but we reckon it might have a bit to do with Schoolies week. Good one Bill.
