West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club Est. 1930

Round 6, Day 1 (18th November 2006)

Bradman Oval match
As one of the ‘events’ to celebrate our 60th Anniversary coming up this season we have booked Bradman Oval for Sunday 3rd December as a Club Day. We are now going through an invitation selection list with the main criteria being those who have given service to our Club.

Girls update
Our Girls are also tracking very well. We have 2 teams this year (a B and C grade side). Round 3 is now complete. Scores will be updated when they come to hand.

Juniors
Round 5 day 1 result highlights are now to hand. Major achievements:
• Adam Hutchings continues his fantastic run in taking wickets with 5/17 in the U15’s
• Also in the U15’s Tim Starr scored 100* and Daniel Brain 91* in their massive score of 2-261 Vs the West Penno Reds. We are checking this out to see if there is a record partnership in here.
• In the U12’s Daniel Anderson took 5/8 with his leggies and followed this up with 53*.

Points table
As at the end of Round 5 the standings are:

U16 – WPHC White 1st, Blues 4th (equal)
U15 – White =3rd, Blue =3rd and Red 13th
U14 – Blue 3rd, Red 6th , White 10th
U13 – White 3rd, Blue 4th, Red 9th
U12 – Gold 1st, Blue 8th, White and Green = 12th
U11 – Green 3rd, Blue 4th, White =8th. Red 10th

No competition for U9 and U10s.

Seniors

Round 6 day 1 started on the weekend. Results are:

A1 198 Vs Berowra 1/50. Some good scores from Greg Fiedler 50, Peter Stott 50 and Amir Zouk with 36 wasn’t enough to get us over the 200 run mark. On a good Berowra track we need a bit of luck next week to get the next 9 wickets but we can do it.
Colts Vs Hornsby – a bye this match.
A2 7/240 Vs Beecroft. A solid performance but just not enough runs yet will probably mean we bat on. Leigh Van den Broeke with 60, Ranga with 41, Brad 40 odd are setting us up for a more than competitive score. The odds are swinging strongly our way in this game.
B1 Red 205 Vs St Ives 1/29. Another solid performance from this talented side. What about Dale van den Boogaard with 44, Nathan Orton 41 and Sausage Mielnik 35 made good contributions. After being 6/111 before a Dale and Eric partnership of 50 we were struggling. These boys have talent and great fighting spirit – they are able to defend anything. Highlight of the day was James Mielnik bringing up his 1,000 runs at 6.03pm – well done mate.
B1 Blue 303 Vs Normanhurst 4/51 – this team are the sleeping giants. Out of the top 4 but with fire power waiting to go off. We scored big runs, fast with Dan Moye hammering 93, Bruce Poehlsen 65, Rowan Keating 40 and Alistair Rayment 34. We have Normo struggling at 4 dwn with Iain Ryan getting 3/4 already. Let's finish this one off boys.
B2 248 Vs Nth Wahroonga 3/60. well placed after day 1. Andrew Percival with 50, Alex Connell continues his run scoring feast with 40 odd and Dom Burke 39 have built a more than competitive score. At 3/60 with a very good attack we are well placed. Well done to Ben Nolan with all 3 wickets.
C1 240 Vs Normanhurst. At last we have put on a good 1st innings score – normally they come in the 2nd innings. A good score with solid contributions and partnerships all the way through. Ross A with 40 helped set the platform up front. Matt Phipson from Colts got a classy 35, Matt Scoular 25. The highlight was birthday boy Andrew Watt who belted 59 with 4 sixers in a great partnership with Bryce who scored 35. If we catch well this will be more than enough with our good bowling attack.
C2 0/88 Vs Kissing Point 202 – with the help of some Colts the C2 boys just keep doing it. Phil Hando got his best figures for the Club with 6/54 to roll Point for a reasnable score. Enter James Fiedler from Colts who alraedy has 62* of the 88 total. we should add another 6 points to the war chest next Saturday.
C3 6/172 Vs Glenhaven – a slow days play but we are well placed. Chris Williamson was the star with 64* and will bat on next week. The challenge will be when to declare but this is a nice position to be in. Well done fella's.
D2 0/14 Vs Kenthurst 147. After having them 7/69 they got away a bit but we are chasing a score well within our capability. We need a win here to consolidate our top 4 position. The boys are going well.

What do you say?
Got to hand it to these tail-enders. Star C1 opening bowler Mark Twohig commented to the umpire about number 11 Pat Nesbitt coming into bat that “I don’t know what to say to him – I haven’t been in this situation before”.

Time warp
John Mitchell, C1 acting Captain couldn’t make it back to the Club last night. He had to go to a Pearl Jam concert – no doubt as a chaperone. If nothing else John would have raised the average age at the concert.

Read about it later
Got to hand it to Steve Quanborough (emerging A2 batting super star). Scotty Reid (Beecroft, obviously an avid reader of our great news updates) commented to Steve that he didn’t know he was such a good bowler to get a mention in our earlier report that Steve survived a ball against him last round. No Scott, it wasn’t your bowling but rather Steve’s rapidly evolving batting talent.

The legend returns
Just like a pair of old Levi’s, Greg Fiedler, Club icon and legend scored 50 in A1 Grade. Not that this is an unusual achievement for Greg. But….in the context of his Colts colleagues who claimed that Greg was having trouble hitting the ball off the square this season (rude bastards) this is a timely reminder that the great man is back!

Watch that moving ball
There is a player (no name to protect his character – but Bryce knows all about it) who apparently has trouble hitting a moving ball this season. This is a problem. Maybe the best advice we can give this bloke is to try golf – the ball is generally still when hit.

No idea
Got to handle it to Eric Junkkari (star B1 all-rounder). When asked back at the Club what happened in his game, Eric gave it a lot of thought and eventually replied that he had ‘no idea’. Must be getting to that age John, Bill, whatever your name is.

Bee swarm
Nothing like a day at Bannockburn Oval with the usual bee swarm stopping the game for a while. Added to this, Gav Taylor confirming to everyone that he is stung at least once whenever he plays there. This was all too much for Eric Junkkari. The fact that he is allergic to bee stings may have had something to do with it but Eric just took off, raced down to the local Pharmacy and in Eric’s words ‘held them up’. He came back to the ground some time later with anti histamines, sprays and pills. By this time the bees had arrived in Brisbane and the game was almost over.

Points table
While the points table is available team by team through the DCA website http://www.cricketnsw.com.au/hkhdca/ the summary position follows:

So far it is early days but of our 10 teams, 5 are in the top 4 with every team now back in the running.

Colts – 10 (5th)
