Round 4, Day 1 (21st October)

Bradman Oval match
As one of the ‘events’ to celebrate our 60th Anniversary coming up this season we have booked Bradman Oval for Sunday 3rd December as a Club Day. So stay tuned and we will keep you informed of next steps.

Girls update
Our Girls are also tracking very well. We will probably have 2 teams this year (a B and C grade side). The girls kick off on the 21st also. Looks like a good season coming up.

Coach required
Folks we still need 1 more coach for our juniors. This is for our Girls B Grade Team. The Girls are between 13 and 16 so if anyone is interested then please let Ross Anderson know.

Juniors
The Juniors are back on deck after the school holidays. Will update any major achievements once the scores come through.

Kanga update
Kanga kicked off on the 21st October. We have a capacity turnout with 112 children playing – all on Edward Bennett Oval. Unfortunately we have had to turn a number of children to Beecroft to give them a game but when the game is this popular at least the kids are playing.

We also had a fabulous volunteers update last week. How about this one – 65 volunteers our of 112 families – must be almost a world record!

Seniors

Round 4 started on the weekend and the results are:

A1 5/149 Vs St Ives at The Glade – says it all. A ground where the winning score has been 150 in the first 3 games added to a moist track with bad light. After being 5/62 we are in reasonable shape. What a great effort by Smokey Dawson with 46* and Troy Newman 38* before bad light stopped play at Tea. Young Troy Newman has scored more runs but this would probably be his best effort in difficult conditions. We will target 200 and take it from there – a reasonable position to be in overnight.
Colts Vs Hornsby – no play, wash out.
A2 6/314 Vs Kenthurst. The boys are on a role and will move comfortably into the top 4 after a likely win. Michael Banner scored a fabulous 103 to bring up our 316th ton. Voice Driscoll also continued his great form with 34 – before this match the Season’s top scorer – not bad for a bowler. Welcome to Ranga Ediriwickrama, Junior Player of the Year last season, who scored 57* playing his first match of the season. The boys are on a roll.
B1 Red Vs Kenthurst 9/203. After having Kenthurst 9/148 they had one of those annoying last wicket partnerships but we are still very well placed. Nathan Orton and James Mielnik each took 3 wickets. The star of the attack though was Eric Junkkari who took 3 wickets including his 300th wicket for West Penno – a fantastic achievement that now puts Eric at number 8 in the all time list of wicket takers.
B1 Blue 2/10 Vs CHRSL 198. A shaky finish in bad light but still very well placed against the 2nd placed team. No outstanding bowling achievements with wickets well spread. A win here will put us into the top 4 so fingers crossed.
B2 4/164 defeated Kissing Point 84. Well on our way to 10 points after this win with more to come. Tim Connell 4 wickets and Adam Walter with 4, demolished 4th placed Point. This is a powerful team that is already 9 points clear of 2nd spot. How about the big unit Gav Hassett with 57* - the big man is on a roll. A special mention to Ben Nolan who also took his 200th wicket for the Club. Well done mate.
C1 65 lost to Beecroft 1/90. One of those days against a team promoted from C2 this Round. Apart from Andrew Watt with 18 not a lot to report. There is always next week to turn this around. Disappointing after a big win last week.
C2 0/6 Vs Kenthurst 181– a solid day with the boys well placed to get first innings points. Best for us was Rolf Rassmussen who took 3/35.
C3 64 lost to Wahroonga 6/191 – C3's had a cold a miserable day. in blustery conditions with only Chris Williamson looking solid. It was after tea however, that our woes really took hold. Our bowlers bowled well in the tricky conditions and created a stream of opportunities but with cold hands and bodies it completely deserted us. The dropped catch count rose well into double figures before one was held to stop the rot.
D2 Vs Hornsby 8/245. After winning the toss and sending Hornsby in we were going well until a 4th wicket stand of 149. The lads are confident that we can clean up the tail quickly next week and deliver the goods.

A big last round
Tons
Last Round saw some fabulous achievements that need to be recognised. Here goes:
• Sean Doohan in B2 scored our 313th century with his 154* against Mt Colah
• Matt Phipson playing for Colts scored 116 – our 314th ton
• Bruce Poehlsen 137 in B1 Blue scored 137 – our 315th ton.

It is not too often that a team with a player who scores a ton is in a losing side but it happened in both B1 and Colts.

Records
After a good start to the season D2came back to earth with a thud when a record D2 grade 2nd wicket partnership of 280 was scored against our boys. There is always next round.

The talent line continues
We are privileged to have some of the truly outstanding Junior talent within NSW playing in our Club. 14 year old Gav Taylor is already a legend being a NSW Blue and scoring 80 in B1 last match. Now we have another emerging star.

How about Ryan Blaker. Just 13 years old, he played his first ever Seniors game in C1 last weekend. Opening the batting he top scored with 71 and held the innings together for a Goodwin. Great to see the young stars playing seniors, doing well and having fun in the process.

Friendly rivalry
Nothing like a bit of friendly rivalry between two of the Club’s greats. In the one corner we have James Makin in A2 making a come back after a few years away sitting on 321 wickets and the contender, Eric Junkkari who now has 301 and closing fast with his 300 on the weekend. These boys now sit at number 7 and 8 in the all time list. Given tat we only have 7 players who have over 300 career wickets we are privileged to have 2 going head to head.

Points table
While the points table is available team by team through the DCA website http://www.cricketnsw.com.au/hkhdca/ the summary position follows:

So far it is early days but of our 10 teams, 9 are in the top 4. Only A1 is outside the pack but they are a good side and will be there at the end.

A1 – 3 points (8th position) – 10 off 4th
A2 – 9 (4th)
Colts – 8 (4th)
B1 Red – 18 (1st)
B1 Blue – 8 (= 4th)
B2 – 22 (1st) – 9 points clear of 2nd!
C1 – 8 (=4th)
C2 – 13 (=2nd) 1 point off 1st place
C3 – 13 (=3rd )
D2 – 13 (=2nd)

Personal achievements
All teams now have updated scorecards so our personal achievements are up to date as at the end of Round 3.

We have now had 2 major milestones achieved over the last 2 weeks:
• Eric Junkkari’s 3 wickets leaves him on 300 career wickets and number 8 on the all time list
• Ben Nolan brought up his 200th wicket – a fantastic achievement that moves him into number 25 on the all time list
• Michael Banner’s 103 brought up his 3,000th run for the Club bringing him to number 25 on the all time list.

There are some big milestones coming up:
• Matt Spalding is just 1 wicket away from his 100 for the Club
