West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club Est. 1930

Round 2, Day 1 (23rd September)

WPH Public School Nets opening
The new nets have been opened and now being used by our children in practice. The Official opening went off well. Apart from representatives of the School and Sports Club we had Lisa Sthalekar, the current Australian Vice Captain as a special guest. Lisa played all her junior cricket with West Penno. Have a look at the photos on the website Photo Gallery when you get a chance.

Bradman Oval match
As one of the ‘events’ to celebrate our 60th Anniversary coming up this season we have booked Bradman Oval for Sunday 3rd December as a Club Day. So stay tuned and we will keep you informed of next steps.

Dominic is back
After a very successful spell in England Dominic is back playing for Northern Districts. Follow his performances and give some support wherever you can when the big man plays at Waitara Oval.

Congratulations
Well done our players who have been selected to play for ND’s this year:
• Luke Quinlivan selected in 3rd Grade
• Stuart Newman, Brendan Ham and Charith Mayadunne playing in 4th’s
• Gavin Taylor, our 14 year old prodigy playing B1 selected in ND’s Green Shield (U16) team plus his selection in the Emerging Blues.

Well done to everyone.

Juniors
Results will be updated as they come through.

Seniors

Day 1 of Round 2 is underway. Summary results are:

A1 – 132 lost to ARL 179. Keeping ARL to a respectable score after 35 overs we struggled to make an impact. Welcome back to Matt Spalding with 2/21 and Peter Stott 2/19. In the batting, Lalin top scored with Michael McGregor 33 were our best. These boys will be there at the end – just a scratchy start.
A2 – 187 Vs ARL 0/1. A solid platform with some good bowling needed next week. Best for us was Scott Jobson with 55.
Colts – start this Sunday.
B1 Blue – WPHCCC 7/265 Vs St Ives. After being sent into bat, we made a very solid start thanks to a marvellous 90 by Dan Moye and 33 from Lachlan Gill. The middle order carried on the good work with Bruce Poelhson making 48 and Rowan Keating 35. We have built a very solid foundation to win this one next week..
B1 Red – 264 Vs Berowra 2/10. A dominant overnight position after some fabulous batting. Our 14 year old dynamo, Gavin Taylor scored a fabulous 79 and John Steel with 69 were brilliant. Other scores were well spread. We should put this one to bed early next week.
B2 – 3/175 defeated Hornsby 59 and 3/21. The boys are on fire. Sean Doohan was our best bowler with 5 wickets but how about Tim Connell who took a double hat-trick with 4 for. We slammed the runs in 25 overs with Alec Connell with 75, Gav Hassett 49 and Sean 30. More about Tim’s hat-trick follows.
C1 – 0/5 Vs Ku-ring-gai Chase 5/275. A game of fielding or more precisely catching. We dropped around 6 catches that allowed them to get momentum. Once we took some good ones the game swung back to us. Get this right and with Andrew Watt back to add strike power it will be a different game. In the bowling, Taylor Payton from the U16’s was our best bowler with 2/20 from 6 overs. A lot of work to do next week but this is a fast ground with short straight boundaries.
C2 – 89 Vs Beecroft 0/82. After a spectacular win last week we came back to earth. Only Rolf Rasmussen made an impact with the bat with 20 odd. The talent is there we just need to value our wickets a bit more. Let’s see how week 2 pans out.
C3 – 112 Vs 2/115. After the Round 1 bye this was our first hit-out. Chris Williamson with 20 odd batted well without much support. Playing at Cliff, this is a small ground in fact we hit 2 sixers before we got a 4. This match may be gone but we were rusty and there is enough to suggest that the boys will develop nicely.
D2 – 5/46 Vs Kissing Point 154. Nothing wrong with the bowling with Nigel Moore 2/15 and Ben Pilipowski 2/16 doing especially well. The batting stumbled but as we showed last week there is depth so you never know. As Peter Westerberg says – don’t write us off yet.

The tradition continues
One of the many good things that Simon Smyth has introduced as A1 Captain is the formal handing out of Club Caps to new A1 graded players. This is a great tradition following in the tradition of the Australian Baggy. Congratulations to Ben Frawley, Lalin Da Silva, Peter Stott and Michael McGregor.

Keep them on Matt
Big A1 strike bowler Matt Spalding just couldn’t keep his pants on – not a pretty sight. Coming into bowl the first over big Spider managed to snap the cord in his pants. It got worse with his pants falling down around his ankles coming into bowl. It got even worse when the only pair of replacement pants came up to his shins. Add some football socks to cover the legs and it was a sight to behold. Well done Spider.

Double hat-trick
B2 workhorse Tim Connell has achieved yet another career milestone. He took 4 wickets in 4 balls to get a rare double hat-trick. This is the 30th hat-trick in our history. He made no mistake about it by bowling 3 and having 1 caught. We don’t have any records of doubles but of the 30 hat-tricks in our 60 years he would probably be in the Grand Final for this achievement. Well done Tim.

Sorry mate
C1 all-rounder Bryce Morley has done it again. Bryce must be the nicest fast bowler to have played the game – smiling at batsmen and apologising the umpires for appealing – that sort of stuff – completely unacceptable for a medium pacer. It happened again. After bowling a friendly full toss at the batsman, Bryce aplogised not once but 3 times. Then after dropping a catch he recovered very well to run the batsman out – followed by another stream of apologies. Maybe a bit of raw meat before a game will bring out that lurking animal.

Pocket dynamo
Well done Gav Taylor. After being selected in the Northern Districts Green Shield team (U16s), added to his Emerging NSW Blues selection, Gav compiled a very good 79 in B1. Not a bad effort but when considering he has only recently turned 14 this is a special effort. Well done Gav.
