Round 1- day 1 (17th September)
WPH Public School Nets opening
Everyone who lives in the WPH/Cherrybrook knows that we have a critical shortage of grounds and training facilities – not just in cricket but all sports. Well, we have done something about it. Together with our Local Member (Michael Richardson) and WPH Sports Club we raised just on $25,000 to completely remake the nets at West Pennant Hills Public School. They were officially opened on Friday with a star studded team – including Lisa Sthalekar (Vice Captain of the Australian Women’s cricket Team and ex WPH Junior) plus the Local member and many other dignitaries. Photos will appear on the website shortly.
The last time anything was done on these nets was 40 years ago! An interesting piece of rivia is that these are the first nets that Lisa ever practiced in.
Keep a look out in the local media this week – we had a good turnout from the press.
All the info you need
Just a final reminder that you can track at any time all the info you need to know about how your team is performing throughout the season – both Juniors and Seniors.
This site has everything you need to find out what is happening throughout the season:
• Competition tables
• Draw
• Comparative results – how other teams are going and who has starred in these teams
• Cumulative batting and bowling
The site URL is http://www.cricketnsw.com.au/hkhdca/. and then just log into WPHC.
Match reports
From next week we will start the Team Match Report (Seniors and Juniors) sections on the website up again. This was very popular last year. If anyone is interested in doing this for their own team then juts let your Captain know. It is genuinely easy with my 8 year old doing the Reports for his team. Stay tuned.
Juniors
Results will be updated as they come through.
Seniors
Thanks
As we all take the field this weekend let's just get a thought to those folk who make it happen. Our Captains are our season hero's who make the saeson run. The really big effort though is at the beginning of the season. The efforts of Matt Nolan and Craig Willmott have been simply amazing this season so when you seen them around just say thanks - they deserve it!
Colts team
After a lot of discussions with the Association and working through numbers we have entered another team for this season – a Colts team for our U19 players. This brings us up to 10 teams this year so will put a stretch on numbers at holiday time but we should get there. Colts play on turf and is a great intro to senior cricket.
Weekend results
At last, after a wet start last weekend we got on with a one-dayer. Results are:
A1 – the lads start next week once the turf is available
A2 – 115 lost to Beecroft 157. Always a bit tough in the first game but this side will do well this year. Star for us was Brad Hingle who top scored with 37 and took 2 wickets. Mark Bonnichsen took 3 wickets and what about Steve Quanborough was 0* after facing 1 ball. These boys will be up there at the end.
Colts – start next weekend.
B1 Blue – 157 defeated Berowra 118. Don’t have any specific scores apart from Bruce Poehlsen starring with the bat.
B1 Red – 127 defeated CHRSL 9/125. What a thriller with a win, 9 down on the second last ball of the game. Another of our new players, John Steel made his mark with 29 and 3/24. Dave Matthews with 3/14 bowled really well.
B2 – 5/198 defeated St Ives 7/83. Where do you start with this one – a thumping win win Alex Connell up from C2 last season hammering 57 and Millsy 43. Chandana with 48* and Andrew Fiedler 25 all performed with the bat. The bowling honours were well spread.
C1 – 5/112 lost to St Ives 6/181. A slow start but with some good performances. Bowling first they got away to a flyer and this was always going to be hard to peg back. Chris Collits (3/31) and Mark Twohig (3/28) bowled very well. In the batting, Nick Bennetts was all class for 55 and Kishore continued on from last year with 22.
C2 – 168 defeated Thornleigh 167. Yet another thriller with a last ball win to Craig’s boys. After getting a respectable 129. Star of the bowlers was Craig ‘The Man’ himself who took 3/2 off 3 overs! Let’s not worry about his 4th over (21uns) but a mighty bowling effort. Our turn to bat Matt Scoular scored 70 and Rolf Rasmussen 30. A fabulous effort.
C3 – bye this round.
D2 – 174 defeated Kenthurst 6/155. A good win for our fathers and son team. Star was James McBrien who scored 77 and Nigel Moore with 50. The win was even more noteworthy as we had one of our players come down ill and fielded with 9 players at one stage. A good start to the season.
Thrillers
Last season was our best for a long time with 7 teams in the Semi’s but we lost al 7 games. This is now ancient history with a real turnaround – 5 wins, 2 losses and 1 result to follow. How about the wins – 2 games down to the last 2 balls but 2 wins.
The ‘Once Big Man’ strikes back
What about Craig Willmott’s bowling performance. In the team for his batting and Captaincy Craig bowled one (less than memorable) over last season. As Craig said after that over “I gave it away for the season”. This match, another season, he put the demons of the past away and took 3/2 from 3 overs – his best bowling performance in17 years with the mighty Blues. Let’s forget the last over – 21 runs gave the record number of runs off an over (30) a shake but who cares with a 3 for.
Shirts, caps and things
Shirts
A few of our new players do not yet have Club Shirts or Caps. As part of the season’s fees everyone who joins our Club gets a Club Shirt. If you don’t have one then just ask your Captain and it will be arranged.
Caps
Just a reminder that everyone should wear a Club cap rather than the old favourite. We have the baseball type available for $10 each and the more traditional baggy for $30. Again, just let your Captain know and this can be arranged easily.
Fees
Our Treasurer, Gavan Hassett will be pulling a list together of folks who need to pay. Just a reminder that if you haven’t paid yet please bring the money along next week to your Captain.
Girls
Registrations can continue to be received right up to the season start and in some case beyond. Practice will also be arranged at a specific time and place closer to the start of the season.
