Re-gradings
After a lot of running around this week saw the Association decide to drop the recently promoted B1 side back to B2. A really good decision.

Seniors
A1 137 lost to CHRSL 153 – we lost but a lot of positives from this game. After being 1/90 overnight we were looking down the barrel. Our bowlers had a different view. Matt dawson was simply superb taking 8/38. This is only the 36th time a WPHC player has taken 8 wickes or better in an innings and the best bowling performance in A1 since Ken Donaldson took took 16 wickets in a match 1978/79. So this is a once in a generation bowling performance. Great stuff Matt.
A2 8/273 defeated Kenthurst 121 – a huge win against last year’s Premiers. This is a hot team in both batting and bowling with the bowlers doing the job this week. Matt Jobbo continues to star taking 4/24 (14 overs) but got great backup from Rowan Dixit 4/59 and Hendo with 1/13. This win consolidates at the top of the table.
Colts Red 87 lost to Berowra 5/92 – another tuough game plaed on a wet turf ground (The Glade). No outstanding individual performances - hopefully some dry tracks next week.
Colts Blue 70 lost to Kenthurst 92 – a Turramurra Oval game - enough said. Not much to report in the batting but in the bowling Dylan Brogan with 3/5 and Tim Anderson 3/21 starred. The pitch was its usual Turramurra self, 7 LBW's sums up the 2 innings and really the pitch determined the result, shame we lost the toss. The boys played well and fought hard but the pitch was the winner with only 2 scores above 11 for the match.
B1 Blue 9/331 defeated outright St Ives 123 and 164 – this talented side just continues to perform. This week we bowled and got 20 wickets to get ten points for the match. Andrew Joyce took 4/11 (7 overs) and got great support from Chris Thorndyke with 3/16 and Paul Tilley with two. This demolition took 29 overs over the 4th placed side. Batting a second time we rolled them for 164 with Paul Tilley taking 3/25, Michael McDowell 2/17 and the consistent Chris Thorndyke 2/47.
B1 Red 150 and 157 lost outright Glenhaven 291 – following the incorrect decision to promote the lads to B1 from B2 we played a very strong Glenhaven and were thumped – as expected. Despite this the guys showed some fight with Ben Nolan getting his highest score with 70 and Justin Paterson 33. The Association has sensibly regrade the team back to B2 where they will be competitive.
B2 6/261 defeated Hornsby 254 – a very good win against one of the top sides. After just being promoted from C1 this was a very pleasing win. Runs were very well spread with Nathan Fathers just continuing to score runs with 69, David Luland 66, Gamini 34, Kishore 24 and Ross A 21. Missing our star bat Gus through work commitments the spread of run scoring was especially pleasing.
C2 7/212 defeated St Ives 188 – resuming on 3/93 chasing 188 against the top team St Ives, we were rarely troubled. Geoff Richards was run out early on for 58, but Nick Starr batted superbly to guide us to the total, only to be dismissed after we had won. He finally exited for 85....not bad for a 14 year old batting in his 2nd game in seniors. Only other notable score was Andrew Fiedler with 29*. We finished 7/212 when it bucketed down just before tea....so we called stumps.
C3 116 and 3/100 defeated outright Glenhaven 93 and 107 – a very important win to get this talented side off the bottom of the table and back into top 4 consideration. Having already won on the 1st innings last week we did the job again with the ball. Jacques Visser this time took over from Chris Williamson with 5/44. Our batting then finished the job with Peter Heidegger scoring 39* and Chris Williamson finishing with 25* to see us across the line with a 52 partnership. Well done to Steve Baker in scoring his 1,000th Club run and ending our own 'Gone with the Wind' saga – well done mate.
D1 135 and 6/117 lost to ARL 258 – out played by a team moved down from a higher grade. Marco Delgado salvaged some honour in defeat, taking 7-61. – 126th time. Faisal Shamsi top scoring in our second innings with 44 & Chris Milojevic back in form, 36 not out.
D2 126 and 4/227 126 defeated St Ives 80 and 7/141 – a very pleasing win, just falling short of the outright. At 2-20 after 8 overs, our game plan of setting very small targets and defending them looked a strong possibility. Enter Sid Vish(nu) and our game plan was turned on its head. After a 136 partnership(V. Ratnam & R. Smith), we definitely got the low score monkey off our backs. We declared at 4/227 after 41 overs. This gave us 31 overs to roll them over, a feat achieved in the 1st innings. We came very close having them at 7/141 at stumps. Special mentions to Mikey "Everywhere" Fitzpatrick who took 1-14 in a wizard like spell, Andy "Hot Potato" Duff and Pat "Where Is He?" Douglas both taking a classic catch each.
Eventually
The ongoing saga about Steve Baker (C3) getting his 1,000 runs finally came to a conclusion when he scored 19 against Glenhaven. This one has been going since early last year but the monkey is now well off Steve’s back. Bring on the next 1,000!
The Bruise brothers
Another Tilley moment
Last week’s Report was dedicated to our English import – B1 star Paul Tilley. The lad had a match off last week and the human headline has done it again. PT played in a Telegraph Shield match last Sunday, and scored 54! After copping couple of hits to the body in that innings he proudly displayed his bruises (badges of honour) to his B1 team mates before play. At tea, he was still busy showing his bruises, to anyone who may have missed it earlier. With less than an hour to play, and the opposition desperately trying to avoid an outright loss PT was seen on the boundary pulling his pants up and showing his bruises to a spectator.
Ben Nolan
Got to hand it to opening bowler Ben Nolan (B1) who batted against a fearsome attack. Ben top scored with 70 – beating his previous best of 50, way back in 1996/97. What makes this special is that he has more bruises than runs in one of the gutsiest displays this season.
Enter Eric Junkkari
Not to be outdone, the great Eric Junkkari was enjoying a well earned beer after an outright loss. Not to be outdone Eric then showed his bruise – a beauty. It was obtained while fielding at mid off where the rebound off his shin apparently went a further 20 metres. Sounds like maybe he should have used his hands instead.
Rep stars
Seniors
Well done to Paul Tilley (PT) who scored 54 in Telegraph Shield and Chris Thorndyke with 3/35 (11) – great stuff fella’s.

Seniors
A1 137 Vs CHRSL 1/90 – one of those days against the top side. We simply were out bowled and out bated on the day. Best with the bat for us was Amir Marzouk with 29 and Bill Peterkin 26, Smokey Dawson and Simon Smyth with 19 each. The positive is that every good side has an off day – this is ours hopefully for the season.
A2 8/273 Vs Kenthurst – a very solid score against the Team that beat us in the Final last season. Leigh Van den Broeke did the job again with 62 and got good support from Ben Frawley 55, Sujith 40 and James Fiedler 37 – good scores from a number of players. There is still work to do against a good batting side but with our attack that is in form the runs on the board.
Colts Red 30 and 3/101 defeated outright after losing on the first innings Kissing Point 67 and 5 dec 59. A very difficult day on a substandard wicket but the result is a reflection and testament of the courage and commitment of the team. Our bowling and fielding in Kissing Point’s first innings was excellent. Isaac Malamel was fantastic in claiming 6/21. In response we struggled against bowling that made good use of the tricky deck and we fell well short of the total. At this stage we assumed that the match would be ending but the opposition sensed an opportunity to achieve outright points. They added a quick 59 (with Isaac getting a further 3 wickets) and seemed to expect to run through us. This was an error in judgement as rather than defending for a 2nd innings draw we accepted the challenge and comfortably won outright. In particular, Shane Campbell (24), Patrick Bertoldo (22no) and Parneet Bhatia (23no) batted both positively and sensibly to reach the target with more than 3 overs remaining. Great effort fella’s.
Colts Blue 7/147 defeated Berowra 3/146 –what a game with a last ball win to the Blues who chased. Our innings started well with a solid opening partnership of 52 between Sam Klienhans and James McBrien before James was out shortly after drinks. Sam then went on to have a number of partnerships before being out with the score on 139 with just 8 runs needed for victory and 8 balls left in the innings. We just got home with 1 ball to spare. Batting for us saw Sam Klienhans top score with 51, James McBrien 33. In the bowling not much to report other than we did enough to get over the line.
B1 Blue 9/326 Vs St Ives – an imposing score against equal 2nd placed St Ives. Dom Bourke top scored with 74 and got very good support from Matt Thorndyke 38, Andrew Joyce 36, Chris Thorndyke 32, Andrew Mills35 and Michael McDowell his usual 20 odd. How about Rowan Keating – with 1 run the only batsman to get less than 20 runs.
B1 Red Vs Glenhaven – scores to come.
B2 0/4 Vs Hornsby 254 – after having them 7/124 at Tea they got away but overall Campbell Park has a par score of around 300 as it is the best batting deck in the comp with fast boundaries and short boundaries. Wickets were well spread with John Steel doing it again with 3wickets, Craig Hutchinson, Andrew watt and Kishore each taking 2 wickets. With a good batting line-up to come this is well within our range. Congratulations to Craig Hutchinson who took his 100th career wicket for us.
C2 3/98 Vs St Ives 188 – a good comeback after a wobble last week. Wickets were shared, with Lachlan McBrien 3, James Creais, Geoff Richards & Nick Starr 2 each. We had 26 overs to bat and finished at 3/98. Geoff R is 58 no. We're at Shore 2, which is small, so we reckon we're in the drivers seat here.
C3 116 defeated Glenhaven 91 – a fabulous day-1 result against the competition leaders. Chris Williamson was the destroyer with 6/27. We then approached the run chase positively and have a lead of 25 on the 1st innings. Best for us were Rolf Rassmussen 35 and Mark Bell 31. This is looking like an outright result but so far so good.
D1 135 Vs ARL 3/92 – an under-strength WPHC struggled with the bat to be dismissed for 135 despite our best start of the season (50 for the first wicket, thanks to a solid 25 from Ben Pilipowski). Bruce Caldwell top scored with 35 while stand-in batsman Peter Quinlivan impressed with a dashing 27 before being run out standing still! Bowling for us, Marco Delgado took early wickets to finish on 3-26. With two of our big guns back on deck next week expect a spirited fight back but whether we can still pull this one out of the fire remains to be seen.
D2 126 defeated St Ives 80 – playing the team that was moved down from D1 we turned it on. Probably not much to report on the batting but the bowlers defended our low total very well. Ten points from this game would put us comfortably into the top 4. WPHCCC won the toss and elected to bat. We had an amazing batting performance, whereby we made an incredible 126 runs after 33 over’s. Second highest score was E Xtras on 37 and highest score was Arun Kumar who was caught & bowled on 40 runs, with Mike Fitzpatrick the only player behind Arun who made double figures on 13 runs. And then the fun started again. We were able to wrap them up in 30 over’s for a total of 80 runs. Man of the day was Arun who got 4/13 runs, followed by Vishnu 2/10; Jonathan 2/14 and Sekhar 2/21.
All ten
In one of those rare events the recently promoted B2 side (up from C1) took all 10 wickets through catches. With 4 catches also dropped it was almost a team and a half in dismissals. On the Campbell Park deck it is difficult to bowl anyone it is so good to bat on. Well done fella’s.
Quotes from an emerging star
This note is all about Paul Tilley (B1 Blue), an emerging star/character in the B1 Blue team. Recently arrived from England, Tilley is a leg spinning bowler, opening batsman, and part time keeper. Here are a few Tilley moments:
• Round 1- off his own bowling, Tilley dropped a straight forward catch. 2 balls later, a difficult catch was dropped on the boundary. PT asked the Captain if the boundary fieldsman could be replaced by someone who can catch.
• Round 2 – while keeping to Rohan Keating, PT commented that his hands were hurting due to the pace. While feeling some pain after a couple of fast deliveries PT said "I'm not stopping any leg side crap bowling, Rohan bowls too hard !" . a few balls later, 4 byes were let through. In the words of our ‘source’ “Who said the English are soft”?
• Round 4 – on a day where wickets were tough to get. Fielding at mid on,PT provided some insight to the bowler (Ryan Cherrie) – "Bowl it on the stumps, and you will get him out." A couple of balls later, Ryan clean bowled the batsman with a yorker. Ryan went on to finish with 4 wickets for the day, and attributes his performance to the insightful coaching of PT.
• PT sat out week 1 of round 5, but is back next week for a full day in the field, and should provide some more classic moments for the lads.

Seniors
A1 193 lost to ARL 8/222 – a case of just not enough runs in this tight competition. Wickets were pretty well spread with Amir and Simon both getting 2 but about 40 short of what we needed.
A2 135 defeated ARL 115 – the boys pulled a big win, taking 5/30 today to knock ARL over for 115, after being 5/85 overnight (chasing 136 to win). Darren Morrow came in as a week two and took 4/9, Henderson 4/40 off 20. We then went on to bat again, got to 1/84 at tea and called it off. Robertson 42 in the 2nd dig.
Colts Red 6/134 defeated Kenthurst 133 – after Kenthurst got away to a very solid start the boys hung in and were rewarded by limiting the run chase to a manageable 133. After a really tidy display of wicketkeeping in the first 20 overs, Tom Blissenden cleaned up the tail with 3/10 with one of those wickets being the first father son combination of the season (Caught M. Blissenden - Bowled T. Blissenden). Parneet Bhatia and Adam Hutchings claimed 2 wickets each. There were a few anxious moments in the run chase but Hiran Nagahawatta showed class in providing the foundation of the innings. Along with Patrick Bertoldo, who added to his recent great form with a 43 no, the pair ensured that the match was safely ours.
Colts Blue 5/35 defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee 22 – not a lot to be said about this one other than it was played on a minefield at Turramurra oval. The stats for both teams tell the story. 15 wickets in 29.3 overs for just 57 runs. Even allowing for the pitch the bowlers had to put the ball in the right place and Tim Scoular 6.3 overs 6 for 9 and Dylan Brogan 7 overs 4 for 10 did just that to take the wickets. We didn't need to use any other bowlers on the day. Our batsmen survived the conditions slightly better although we only had a top score of 7.
B1 226 lost to Berowra 6/235 – disappointing day.Day 1 we got 226, and had them 1/53. Didn’t get an early break through and they were 1/120-130, before our first wicket. Fought back through Ryan Cherrie who ended up with 4/47, and bowled really well but wasn’t enough. Bowled 4 good balls an over, and the rest were 4 balls that just let off the pressure early. We will bounce back though
B2 160 lost to CHRSL 5/164 – while putting up a good effort we didn’t have enough runs or enough firepower to make an impact this match. With this side going up to B1 next round we will approach the Association to see what can be done to keep them in B2 where they will be competitive.
C1 244 defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee 186 – another strong performance that has seen us move into 2nd spot. John Seel capped off a great batting display in the first innings with 5/32 – all bowled to finish off the game early. Next match the boys move to B2 and should be competitive.
C2 211 lost to Hornsby 267 – after passing us they put us back in for 47 overs or so & we shook our batting order up a bit to give a few of the kids a bat. We managed to hold out at 9/156 (or thereabouts). Taki top-scored with 30-odd. And Andrew Fiedler scored 28 not out to bring up his 4,000 Club runs – a fantastic achievement.
C3 237 lost to Normanhurst-Warrawee 9/238 – after posting a respectable score in week one and despite removing the other opener in the first over of the day to have them 2 for 12, we were inflicted with a case of the dropsies and numerous near misses. To the teams credit we fought back from 4/194 and had them 8/216 but we couldn't pull of the miracle. Outstanding bowling performance from Nikunj Patel with 5 / 58 from 22 overs and Mark Bell 2 / 21 from 10 overs.
D1 232 lost to Kissing Point 280 – another great game of cricket and a defeat that felt more like a victory. Chasing 281 to win, we took the fight right up to Kissing Point, batting all day, scoring well in excess of two hundred runs for the third time in as many matches. The batting depth of this team can be seen in the fact that no less than six of us scored 20 runs and above, honourable mention going to: Brendan Harkin, settling seamlessly into the opener's spot and top-scoring with 63; an injured Faisal Shamsi, overcoming the pain barrier to make a gutsy 37; the surprise package of our team, the modest Sam Thariani punishing the wayward bowlers in a lightning 22, all but two in boundaries on this big field.
D2 91 defeated Galston-Glenorie 74 – a fabulous comebcak to take first innings points. Come the 2nd innings - we crashed to be out for 79. Battijng a 2nd time, Galston-Glenorie either an outright win or a close miss - the problem is the not uncommon problem of scorebooks not balancing. Looks like we might have to wait alittle while to see how this pans out.

Seniors
A1 190 Vs ARL 3/20 – the heavyweight clash between our boys (1st) and ARL (5th). We struggled to a reasonable score against good bowling with Peter Stott (40 odd), Peter Whitehead (40) and Gav Taylor 30 were the backbone on the innings. A highlight was also the 80 run opening partnership between Peter W and Gav. At stumps we have fought back well an early breakthrough next week putting this game right into the frame.
A2 135 Vs ARL 5/85 – another big match with 5 (us) Vs 1. After being 5/25 enter Scott Henderson who yet again got runs when needed with 39. There is still a lot of cricket in this one with the match evenly balanced. Scott again has done the damage with 5/29 (14 overs) and Matt Jobbo with 2/14 (8) overs. All up, there were 15 wickets falling for 220 runs showing the quality of these two good attacks.
Colts Red Vs Kenthurst – no play during the HSC. The guys start up again on the 2nd November.
Colts Blue Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee – HSC break until the 1st November.
B1 226 Vs Berowra 1/53 – another showdown between the top two teams. The Matt Thorndyke show returned to town with a top score of 65. Michael McDowell chipped in again with his usual 30. Andrew Joyce continues his outstanding all-round performances with 40. We finished up with a good solid, defendable score. At 1/53 in reply (Andrew Joyce again doing the damage) we will need early wickets to get back on the front foot.
B2 160 Vs CHRSL 4/49 – thanks to Justin Paterson (41) and Alex Connell (39) we battled to a competitive score. The damage has been dome with our bowling with Ben McNamara taking all 4 wickets to also bring up his 100 career wickets – well done mate. With Castle Hill’s strength in their batting we are well placed in this game albeit with a fine margin for error.
C1 244 Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee 3/72 – our 3rd consecutive score of 250 (or thereabouts) or more. John Steel was brilliant again, smashing his way to 103 – our 334th Club century – well done mate. John Mitchell playing his first game was also outstanding with 41 – seeing off the new ball. With 13 overs to bowl they went for it but have lost 3 important wickets. Wickets have been spread but Andrew Watt, Jaskaran and Kishore all bowling well. Next week with 4 spinners back we like our chances.
C2 211 Vs Hornsby 2/161 – a bit of work to do in this game. Well done to James Creais (59), Geoff Starr 41*) and Geoff Richards with 53 who were the foundation of this solid score. Our turn to bowl and they smashed the runs in 22 overs. It is always going to be tough restricting a good batting side with bowlers operating under over restrictions. Next weekend is another day so we will see what happens.
C3 237 Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee 1/12 – an important game to consolidate our position in the top 4 and we are on track to do it. Greg Harris got his best score for us with 54 with Amesh de Silva continuing his good form with 49. Great to see Chris Williamson back and firing with 21. Mark Bell has done the early damage with ¼ in an important breakthrough.
D1 0/19 Vs Kissing Point 280 – these scores keep getting bigger! Not our best day in the field: quite a few chances went to ground and injuries taking their toll. In the bowling, Shankar Ravi finally hit form, taking 4-60 including another stumping by Bruce Caldwel. Chris Milojevic (2-47), Roger Friend (2-65) and Nick Grima (1-14) were the other successful bowlers. Bruce Caldwell had a good day behind the stumps, taking two catches and the stumping, Chris Milojevic also making himself useful in the field with two catches. We are a strong batting side and we know we can make the runs: next week will really put us to the test.
D2 91 Vs Galston-Glenorie 8/66 – a cliff hanger underway. After just batting badly we had a team and strategizing, in other words “we did not know what to do, other than go out there and defend our great score” It worked. Sekhar Vardhan was on fire and he got himself 5 wickets for 12 runs, Claudio Van Blerk took 2 for 7 runs and Russell Smith took1/10. As Johnathan van Blerk commented “it was great being out there in the field with these guys as it felt like we are still on the soccer field with the way we were using our feet to stop the ball”.
Welcome back ‘sorry’
It is always good to have old friends return. Bryce Morley (C1) in this case. Bryce has the Club record for saying sorry the most recorded times in our history – to batsman, fielders, bowlers, batting partners and also to Umpires for appealing. He was at it again yesterday – after almost being involved in a run-out with his batting partner (John Mitchell) there were 6 ‘sorry’s’ in one sentence. Great to have you back playing Bryce.
Floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee
Got to hand it to the wonderfully talented Gavin Taylor (A1) – our youngest ever A1 Grader. To put this in context, Gav goes to The Kings School and the only way he gets out of playing cricket for the School (so he can play for us) is to do swimming. Unfortunately just before the game, he had to swim 4 kilometres in squad training. While opening the batting (he scored a courageous 30 in an 80 partnership) he started getting bad cramps. To make things worse he was then stung by a bee on the shoulder. While amusing, from a distance, he ended up dropping the bat after every shot due to the pain. Gutsy effort Gav and the type of commitment that will get this close A1 Team into the big games at the end.
Footy on the street
Got to hand it to ‘The Entertainer’ Dom Bourke (B1). At 2.00 am on Thursday night, after a more than a few beers the boys thought it would be a good idea to play street football – as one does. Dom did a flying dive and landed face first on the road – his face shows what happens when you take a road on. Apart from improving his looks, all he knows is that it happened somewhere in Sydney.
It’s too dark
Got to hand it to Jaskaran Singh (C1). After being fired for a 1st ball LBW the explanation was brilliant, “it was too dark”. Problem was that it was sunny, not a cloud in the sky – not even a magpie’s shadow over the pitch. Then it became clearer – the ball was too dark. Now we understand. After John Steel smashed 103 the ball must have been badly bruised.
Tony Hadley update
We can’t let the great Tony Hadley escape from our News updates even though he is living in WA. The big fella is now expecting his 3rd child. Everyone is waiting to see the new bub to see if it looks anything like Tony. The boys are waiting to see who the father is – it can’t be him.

They play a few games and also watch the Brisbane Test Match. The cost is $825 that includes accommodation and entrance to the first 2 days of the Test. If you are interested than give Ross Anderson a call on 9476-0595.
Seniors
A1 295 defeated Berowra 107 & 2/30 – a comprehensive win against a team that will be in the top 4. Like the batting, one of the major positives coming from is the spread of performances. Simon Smyth is in a golden run taking 5/25 from 16 straight overs) but got fabulous backup from Amir Marzouk with the rest spread. Well done to Sujith who took his first wicket in A1.
A2 9/282 defeated Galston Glenorie 253 – another good win against one of the top teams. Strength again came from the spread of performances. Newcomer Darren Morrow backed up his 28 with the bat to take 4/62, Matt Jobbo 3/46 (18 overs) and Scott Henderson 2/39 were outstanding. After a loss and a draw in the first 2 games this is an important win for this Team who wants to win back the Premiership trophy they lost last year.
Colts Red Vs Kenthurst – no play during the HSC. The guys start up again on the 2nd November.
Colts Blue Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee – HSC break until the 1st November.
B1 207 defeated Kenthurst 125 and 7/134 – what was shaping as an annihilation of top 4 Kenthurst (they were 8/29 overnight) this turned out to be a comfortable win. In the 1st innings Andrew Joyce continued his great run with 6/21 and continues to get tremendous backup from Rowan Keating with 3/28. With strength in the batting and bowling these boys will take a lot of stopping this season.
B2 8/369 drew Pymble – what a shame. After scoring a massive 369 on a new pitch at Campbell it was vandalised and Council called the match a draw. You don’t lose too many games with this score but it ‘is as it is’. Bring on next week.
C1 284 defeated outright Hornsby 106 and 165 – a very strong result across the paddock. Backing up a strong batting line up is bowling depth that will give other sides a shudder – this includes 5 genuine spinners – 3 of whom are wicket taking leggies. In the first innings, Craig Hutchinson took 4/20 but got great backup from Daniel Anderson (DA) with 3/14 and John Steel 2/13. In the 2nd innings wickets this time being taken by DA with 2/5 (4 overs), Chris Sharkey 2/26, Gus Grima 2/32 and Jaskaran 1/30 who bowled well without luck. There is not a weakness in this team with strong batting to no 11 and awesome bowling depth. Well done boys.
C2 181 defeated Mt Colah 7/185 – another good result from a talented side but anchored by tough bowling restrictions – both age based and imposed but they can’t do much more than win 2 on the trot. Geoff Richards was the star with 66* and 36 from Geoff Starr, down from Colts during their HSC break. The boys are on a roll.
C3 187 and 3/126 lost to Berowra 8/390 – we gave ourselves a good chance at 0/77 after 15 overs but the big chase was just too much. In the first innings, Mark Bell scored 44 with fellow opener Amesh Da Silva scoring 29. Asked to follow-on the 2nd innings showed what might have been. Peter Heidegger cut loose with 87 that included 5 sixers. Bring on next week.
D1 268 defeated Hornsby 70 and 6/204. Another very good performance by this good side. Star of the bowling was Chris Milosevic who took 5/9 from 10 overs – fantastic effort. In the second innings, Chris did it again, this time taking 4/32. If Chris took just one more wicket he would have been only the 45th player in our long history to take 10 wickets in a match. Well done Chris and D1.
D2 200 defeated Normanhurst / Warrawee 126 – a very strong win from this ‘surprise packet’ team. Normo will be one of the finalist this year and were confident, even more so at 3/91 on a field that had been cut after we struggled on ankle depth grass the week before. According to our Captain Johnathan Van Blerk:
“And the day started, the wicketkeeper (Jono) dropped 2 catches. Sekhar went on to get 3 wickets for 12 runs in 9 over’s, Vishnu aka (Sid Vicious) got himself 2 for 16 in 7 over’s, leaving both Ian and Claudio with a wicket each. Before we wiped the @#$% out of our eyes, we had them all out for 126 runs after bowling 21 over’s today and we had only given them another 3 extras”
“The birds and the bees”
Got to hand it to Jaskaran Singh (C1). After making a name for himself as someone petrified by magpies last season this year it is bees. The bee swarm that is well know at Bannockburn Oval this time made an appearance at Karuah Oval fom about an hour. Unfortunately, the bees seemed to like Jaskaran. Just to show his commitment and sheer courage he bowled with his shirt pulled over his head. An interesting tactic that was sure to batsman off but also makes it difficult to see the wicket. So far we have magpies, bees and maybe next week – killer butterflies. Good on you Jas.
The Groin strain – the beginning of another saga
Bill Peterkin (A1 Grade Superstar) is rapidly taking over from the Human Headline – Tony Hadley. Bill has set a new standard in athleticism. After his fantastic catch last week, he pulled a groin muscle moving from gully to 2nd slip. Really sad Bill. Showing his toughness though he should be back next week – fielding in the gully with no 2nd slip moves.
Is he a left hander?
Chris Sharkey (C1 leg spinner) is the observant type. With a left and right hander batting you would expect the thoughtful spinner to be bowling to a well thought out plan. Not our Chris. It took him 3 balls to realise that there was even a left and right hander batting. Well done mate.
The run chase
Two of our batting greats – Kishore Rampersad C1 (3,916 runs) and Andrew Fiedler C2 (3,936 runs) are in a ‘dog fight’ to see who reaches 4,000 runs first. This will put them both in the top 10 run scorers of all time. But....don’t hold your breath. The boys are taking their time and seem to be playing the gentleman’s game of letting the other get there first so it might take some time.
Photo of the Month
October is fast coming to an end. At the end of this month, the WPH Sports Club will be offering a Dinner for 4 people (to the value of $100) to the person who takes our Photo of the Month. The judge will be the Chef! All you need to do take photo's of your games – action photo's, human interest photo's or whatever. The photo judged to the best for the month will get the dinner. This is open to everyone from Kanga, Junior Boys and Girls and Seniors. Apart from being a possible winner the photo will go on to WPH Sports Club internal TV for the month. All photo's submitted will also go onto the website.
