West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club Est. 1930
West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club was formed in 1930 and played in the Parramatta District Junior Cricket Association. After a break during the War years we reformed in 1946 as part of the Hornsby Kuring-gai Cricket Association. We are located in north-west Sydney, NSW, Australia. WPHCCC is one of the largest cricket Clubs in NSW with over 60 teams across all grades, including junior boys, girls (both 9 to 16 years) and non-competition Kanga cricket for under-8's. There are also many teams in the All age Men's competition playing from A1 to D2 Grades. [Kanga kick-off - Saturday 17th October 2009 at Edward Bennett Oval. 120 Kanga’s plus dads, mums and grandparents.]

Club News: Round 14, Day 2 (6th March 2010)

Our latest International success
Added to our International playing roster of Lisa Stahalker and Denise Annetts (Australian Women stars) John Howard, former Prime Minister (1996-2007), was appointed as Vice President of the International Cricket Council in March 2010 and will become the ICC President in 2012.

John is a West Penno player from way back. He played between 1962-63 and 1973-74. In 31 innings he scored 264 runs at 9.78 in B1 and C2 Grades. Bowling stats aren’t that complete – we only have 1 over recorded for 19 runs back in 1968-69.

In a C Grade game in the early 1960’s John was playing at Oakleigh Oval (Goodland’s Road Thornleigh). John was not out at the end of the first Saturday. However, he arrived at the ground late on the second Saturday – he forgot how to get to the ground he had played on the week before arrived late and ended up being out ’retired’.

His brother, Wally, was an outstanding player who played 139 innings for 1,408 runs @ 12.24 and took an amazing 342 wickets @ 16.52 between 1960/61 and 1974/75. So our relationship with the Howard connection goes back many years and we now have the soon to be world leader of cricket as one of ours.

In another story on John’s playing days, he was playing at Headen Park, before they did it up and the blackberry patch at the Thornleigh end. Apparently, the ball went hard and high towards the boundary, where the future Prime Minister was fielding. He had some trouble seeing the ball at most times, and was groping myopically at it as he edged back.

Finally, the ball landed, just as John went over the edge. When the others arrived to see where he was, he was impaled in crucifix formation in the blackberries. One old wag commented years later, "We had a discussion about whether to pull him out or leave him there" - ofcourse the right decision was made to remove him - eventually.

Kanga achievement
Our Kanga program finished on Saturday – another outstanding success. One of the many highlights was the handing out of 73 Graduation Certificates for our players of the future to move into U9’s next year. We should get 70% of these kids playing U9s next season which means about 50 kids will play next season which is equivalent to 5 U9 teams before a ball is bowled next season. Of these players 60% will still be playing in U16’s and 50%-60% will be playing Seniors in 9 years time. This wonderful program is one of the major sources of our growth so well done to everyone involved in the great Program.

U11’s

Seniors
Day 2 of the last round of Competition games was played on Saturday. The results are:

A1 6/128 defeated Hornsby 124 – a comfortable win that moves us into 3rd spot. Matt Dawson played a Captain’s innings for 41* and was well supported by Peter Whitehead with 25 and a few 20’s spread. The highlight though was the 20by Simon Davies that allowed him to score his 5,000th run for West Penno that places him at number 4 in the all-time run scorers list – a wonderful achievement. Well done Simon.

A2 160 lost to Glenhaven 167 – details to follow. Difficult to take too much from this game as it was played at Caterson. We have a team of batsmen who hit the ball along the ground. Teams with players who tonk the ball get value for shots on this very slow ground. The fact that we got to 160 is a fantastic achievement. Tim Leyshon was out best and almost pulled off a win with a super 38 but just not enough. We finished 3rd and play on real ground next week so confidence is high.

Colts
Red 115 defeated WPHC Blue 68 and 0/5 – unfortunately no play was possible so our Reds go through to the Semi Finals and our Blues just miss out.

B1 7/396 defeated Kenthurst 153 – a great warm-up for the semi's with a big win against Kenthurst. With 396 runs on the board in week 1, it was a good opportunity to give our bowlers a solid hit-out in preparation for next week. We comfortably took the points, with Kenthurst unable to get anywhere near our massive total. Best with the ball were Andrew Joyce taking 2/12 off 11 overs, Paul Tilley 2/12 and Ryan Rhino Cherrie 2/29. We finish in 2nd place, most likely playing Normanhurst in our semi final. I'll send the player points through early in the week.

B2 250 defeated Beecroft 198 – a very tough day in the field as we faced up against a determined Beecroft side. In the still and humid conditions, our under-strength bowling attack struggled to make the first breakthrough, although some good disciplined bowling was able to restrict the run rate to a snail’s pace at just over 2 an over. Finally, after 47 overs, we got the first wicket with Simon Roche (2/17) the man to do it on the eve of his return home to the motherland. From there, we kept working hard and wickets fell regularly until they were all out for 199 in 85 overs. Ben Nolan (2/11 from 13 overs) was the only other multiple wicket taker, with 1 each to Mark Bennett, Tim Starr, and Nick Starr, along with 2 catches to James McBrien. A big game in the semis now, and one we are confident of winning if we play near our potential.

C1 182 lost to Kenthurst 7/186 – a close game where we fought extremely well to defend a below par score that should have been 230+ after the start we got. As we finished 2nd irrespective of the result of the game there was a lack of intensity on the first day. We made up for this on Saturday with outstanding bowling and fielding by everyone. Craig Hutchinson was outstanding taking 4/20 odd off 15 overs and got great support from John Steel, Daniel Anderson (at one stage had 1 / 2 off 6 overs) and Jas Singh. Anyway on the Semi Final next week and hopefully the cob-webs will be blown away.

C2 8/84 lost to Mt Colah 229 – this one's short and sweet. Enough said. We face Mt Colah again next week in the semis, hopefully with a different outcome.

C3
White 258 defeated Kissing Point 165 – we continued our winning ways to finish the season as Minor Premiers with a 93-run defeat of Kissing Point. KP resumed on 1/12 chasing a sizeable but getable score on batsman-friendly Mimosa Oval. The intention for the day was to give the key bowlers a good hit-out before the semi's and that is what they got. Whilst KP's top 2 batsmen held us up during an 80-run partnership in the middle overs, we were never really troubled, even though we were a bowler down, and only allowed paceman Riley Miedler to bowl spin to freshen him up for his U16s Final the following day. Best of the bowlers was Riley (3/48), Luke Herzog (2/43) and Chris Creais (2/19). Now for the semis.

Blue 4/350 defeated Kenthurst – the Blues defeated Kenthurst on forfeit soon after we batted on and then declared. The highlight was Claudio van Blerk who scored 150* - our 352nd ton. Well done Claudio.

D1 7/234 defeated ARL 211 – in a 2 Vs 5 playoff we commenced play at 0/24 chasing 211 on slow ankle high grass that resembled a chase of 235/240 against good line and length bowling. We’re extremely pleased with our performance today and will go into the finals next week feeling well prepared and ready. Notable performances with the bat were from Julian Raffel for a gutsy well earned 101* (our 353rd century – well done Julian) and Faisal Shamsi 46. With the ball, Marco Delgado 3/31, Roger Friend 3/27 and David Behelevanas did most of the damage but were very well supported by all the other bowlers.

D2 14 lost to Kenthurst 124 – day 2 is a Sunday game.

Player of the Year
The regular updates have now been closed off for the season with the winner announced at the Presentation Night.

Eric’s day
Eric Junkkari, Club legend and C1 super star had one of those days yesterday that has to be recorded for posterity. Here is just a sample of Eric’s contribution:

Cover your eyes
With a fieldsman on the boundary looking into the sun Eric gave some wonderful advice on how to take a skied catch: ‘Cover your eyes’. Interesting to see how someone could a catch with their eyes covered Eric.

Oh Sh..
Normally when a ball goes up for a catch the response from the fielding side is something like ‘catch-it’. Not Eric. A reasonably easy catch went up to one of our ‘experienced’ fieldsman but right into the setting sun. Eric’s response, loud enough that it could be heard in the next suburb said; ‘Oh Sh..’ and it that’s the way it turned out.

Anatomy of a Low score
Spare a thought for the D2 boys from last weekend. With a weakened team they were playing the now top placed Kenthurst and were rolled for 14. There was no lack of effort but just one of those days and a number of records were set. Here goes:
• The lowest WPHC score in D2 Grade – ‘beating the 30’ we scored in 2005/06 Vs Galston-Glenorie at Northholm
• 2nd lowest score in our Club – much better than the 4 runs we were dismissed for in the 1967/68 B1 Final Vs Perseverance at Campbell Park
• After being 0/9 we lost 4/0 and then scored 2 runs and then lost another 4/0

The boys will look back on this one in time and have a few good stories to share.

Don’t be late
Our D2’s, with an undermanned side last week were rolled for 14 – our lowest D2 score and 2nd lowest score ever. Peter Westerberg, the thinking person’s Captain was on the ball. Being aware that one of our player’s had to play a footy trial on the central coast that finished at mid-day it would take about an hour to get back to Headen Park for a game starting at noon. Peter’s comments were along the lines that ‘while I am confident we can survive the day, don’t be too late getting back’. With the drive back from the Central Coast only an hour hopefully we will last a bit longer this time.

Padded up and ready
The signs were not good before last Saturday’s D2 effort before a ball was bowled. When the number 11 is padded up with helmet ready before the opener’s face a ball is often not a good omen – 15 overs later and 14 runs on the board he was probably proved right.

Hold on to it mate
Got to hand it to A2 ‘keeper, Tim Leyshon who was playing on the pathetically slow Caterson 2. With the boys struggling to hit the ball off the square Tim smashed a quick 38 to almost win the game. In the process he forgot to hold the bat for one shot with the bat flying to deep square leg and the ball, well, it was still on the pitch.

Seniors
Day 1 of the final round before the Semi Finals in 2 weeks.

The results are:

A1 4/76 Vs Hornsby 124 – this is turning out to a huge game for us given that 3rd placed Kenthurst looks like losing and a win here will put us in 3rd spot and a easier semi game next week. Just a very solid bowling effort from everyone. All 6 bowlers took wickets. Spaldo's first spell was a highlight - 41 dot balls before they finally scored off him. A couple of stutters in the batting but we'll get the runs

A2 Vs Glenhaven – details to follow. It was Jobbo’s21st last night so we might get the scores through if he is sober enough later in the day.

Colts
Red 115 defeated WPHC Blue 68 and 0/5 – although it had been a relatively fine week The Glade still managed to be spongy and proved challenging for the batting of both WPHC teams. The Blue team had first go at it and managed 68 with accurate bowling from Parneet Bhatia and Isaac Malamel returning them 4/9 each. Darshan Pandya battled strongly and top scored with an excellent 30 which provided a total to defend. The Red teams batting suffered the same difficulties early in the innings and were looking precarious at 5/33. Parneet Bhatia complemented his fine bowling display with a patient and timely 27 and Daniel Brain's aggressive 33 saw the total reach 118, a 50 run lead.

B1 7/396 Vs Kenthurst – a warm-up for the semi's with 2nd place secured and no chance of claiming the minor premiership. We started the game 16 minutes late with Kenthurst looking uninterested and unorganised -they even took the field without a keeper before a player return to put some pads on.

We started slowly but solidly with Matt Thorndyke and Paul Tilley taking the score to 52 in the 18th over before Matt fell for 34. Tim Millington arrived at the crease and looked in great touch from ball one. He and Paul took the score to 125 before Paul departed for a season-high 41. Tim continued to dominate belting the Kenthurst attack all over the park racing to 50 including ten boundaries. He gave no opportunities and kept the runs coming bringing up his hundred with a lofted drive down the ground. Tim wasn't finished here and continued to build his total with Kenthurst tiring in the field. He brought up his 150 (our 351st century) during an over which include five consecutive boundaries before finally falling for 180, a very memorable innings and a best for any batsman in B-grade this season. More about this innings below.

Good knocks from James Mielnik (24) and Josh Kleinhans (38) supported Tim before Scott Jobson and Chris Thorndyke took 30 runs off the last two overs of the day to leave us just shy of 400. With a strong bowling attack next week we are very confident of an outright win.

B2 250 Vs Beecroft 0/25 – in a 1 Vs 7 game it ended up being quite a good day, however it was looking far less promising early. Alex Connell (25) and Duncan Moore (24) got us away well early, but there were plenty of wickets falling at regular intervals, and when Ben McNamara (22) and Ben Nolan (22) both fell, we were on the back foot at 8/128. However, this brought the brothers to the crease together for the first time this season, and Lachlan (46*) and James McBrien (67) put on a great stand of 94 for the 9th wicket to really turn the game back in our favour. We went out and bowled 11 overs, and despite not taking a wicket, we should be able to defend this score next week against the bottom placed side if we play anywhere near our best. The 9th wicket partnership was a good one but just a little off the record B2 9th wicket club record of 145* between Anthony Wilson and Simon Smyth on 18/1/2004.

C1 182 Vs Kenthurst 2/41 – while our 2nd spot in the Comp is assured we wanted to go into the Semi’s with good momentum. Batting first we started very well with Kishore Rampersad (20) and Eric Junkkari (30). Then Daniel Anderson scored 52 runs to have us well placed at 3 down for around 110. John Steel also hammered the bowling to score 30 in 5 scoring shots and we were looking at 250 with a strong batting order to follow. We failed to capitalise and posted a score well below par for Annangrove. In the 21 overs we had left we had them 2/41 and with a couple of early wickets on a wicket that offers the bowlers a bit of encouragement we are still in the contest. Well done to DA whose 52 brought up his 800th run and 32 wickets for the season in Association games this season in U15s, C1 and Weblin Shield.

C2 4/56 Vs Mt Colah 229 – just to maintain the pattern we once again lost the toss and were asked to bowl on a ideal batting day by Mt Colah. This is a 2 (us) Vs 3 match-up, so is of interest for the semis in 2 weeks time. We bowled with a less than full strength attack and managed to get them all out for 229 in the 50th over. Bowling was shared between 8 bowlers with the wickets shared amongst the bowlers. Our run chase did not start well and we ended the day at 4/56 with Chris Williamson and Glen O'Conner at the crease.

C3
White 258 Vs Kissing Point 1/12 – given the score, a disappointing end to the day, given we had KP by the throat but let them off the hook. After an excellent start courtesy of Pratah Sinnetamby (a solid 49), Brendan Harkin (a magnificent 81) and Riley Miedler (a quick fire 33), we were looking great at 3/203 after 47 overs. However, we lost 5/13 with some very lackadaisical batting. A last wicket partnership of 21 between Brett Hawkins (24) and Chris Creais (8 not out) allowed us to finish with a bit of momentum. We had 13 overs to bowl, and created some tense moments for the Kissing Point openers, but we managed to take a vital wicket on the last ball of the day to have them at 1/12. On a small oval, we have our work cut-out for us next week....with momentum needed before the Semi Finals.

Blue 4/340 Vs Kenthurst – we lost the toss and were put into bat on a very hot day on a very slow outfield at Glenhaven, Chetan and Vishnu Ratnam opened the batting & got off to a steady start. Vishnu was looking good, but was eventually bowled on 61 runs. Claudio van Blerk went in his usual position & showed the rest of us how to play cricket with a straight bat, with Russell Smith supporting him they both took advantage of anything that deserved to be hit. After a great knock, Russell was caught & finished with 50 runs. Even though the outfield was slow, Claudio decided he would take the direct route, with 4x6’s & 11x4’s. Claudio is currently on 140 (our 352nd century) & Michael on 28 both will be out there to start next week.

D1 0/24 Vs ARL 211 – in a 2 Vs 5 playoff Montview Oval seems to be our bogey ground because the last time we played there we dropped 7 catches. Well, this week we went one better by dropping 9 catches which in the end is the reason that we are chasing 211 instead of about 120. Whilst our catching was not up to standard there were other areas of play that were impressive and we fancy our chances of chasing down 211. Our best bowlers today were Roger Friend 3/27, Marco Delgado 3/31, David Behelevanas 2/31 and Graham Auld 2/53

D2 14 lost to Kenthurst 124 –what a day. Playing with a weakened team against 2nd placed Kenthurst we were in early trouble and it went downhill from there. After being 0/9 we were all out for 14 – the lowest D2 score in our history, beating the previous record of 30 set back in 2005 at Northholm. More about this week. When we bowled we didn’t give in and rolled them for 120 with almost every bowler used taking a wicket. Best were Arkit Grover 2/19, Aparajit Roy 2/5, John Anderson 2/11. It will take a huge effort to win from here but we will try and have fun in the process.

The Fiedler Miedler Finals Family affair
How about this for a family Finals commitment. Our esteemed Seniors Director, Andrew Fiedler will be Captaining our C3 Minor Premiers in the Major Semi in 2 weeks. There will be 4 Fiedler’s who take to the field in Semi Finals (Juniors this weekend and Seniors next weekend) and will play in a cumulative 5 Semi Finals.

Andrew Miedler is our Director Coaching and has the same family members who are playing in the same Finals games:

The Fiedler’s
C3 Grade Semi: Andrew (dad) and Daniel
U16: Daniel
U14: Stuart
U12: Michael

The Miedler’s
C3 Grade Semi: Andrew (dad) and Riley
U16: Riley
U14: Harrison
U12s: Bailey

On the WPHC and Berowra Fiedler’s (they are really WPHC stock)
Colts: Greg (dad) and Will (Berowra)
A2: James (playing with WPHC)
B2 : Brad (Berowra)
U15: Brad (Berowra)

The Ides of March
After this Round we will have 10 and possibly 11 Teams in the Seniors Semi Finals. In 2005/06 we had 7 Teams in the Semi’s and everyone was beaten so we ended up with no teams in the Finals. The lesson is that while this is our most successful season ever with 10 Teams as a minimum in the Semi it is no foregone conclusion about the next step. So play hard but beware the Ides of March.

Anatomy of a big innings
How about Tim Millington’s 180 on Saturday in B1 Grade. This innings included:
o 29 x 4 and 1 X 6 – 120 runs in boundaries
o batted for 52 overs
o The first hundred was chanceless, with no opporunities until around 120
o In one over he took the first five balls for boundaries.

It is also the 7th highest score in our history. The 2nd and 3rd highest were also scored this season by Russel Ingram when he score 211 and 223.

C3 turnaround – from famine to flood
The C3 Comp was started in 2001/02and we have never played in a Final let alone won a C3 Premiership. Maybe this year. We have by far the best 2 teams in the Com (Andrew Fiedler’s White Team and Jonathan van Blerk’s Blue Team) who will finish 1 and 2. If they play to form they are both big chances of playing each other in the Final and ensuring we get a Club Premier for the first time. Good luck on the weekend fella’s.

Quote of the Round
It had to come from Chris Williamson (C2) who attributed the blame for a miss-field to a problem we all experience at some time:
“My fingers got caught in his shoelaces"

Ofcourse they did Chris.

Arithmetic progression
John Steel (C1) is never one to sit back and score slowly. On Saturday he score 30 runs in 5 scoring shots. The sequence, in order was: 3, 4, 5, 6, 6, 6

Kookaburra sits on the old.....middle stump
In a U15 Kimbo Cup game yesterday a kookaburra flew onto middle stump and just perched there as the bowler was coming into bowl and didn’t want to move. Despite efforts to gently push it with a bat it wasn’t moving. It was not until it was picked up and put on the ground that it decided to fly away.

Seniors
The end of Round 13 and the final round coming up before the Semi Finals in 2 weeks. The results are:

A1 132 lost to ARL 152 – we went down today…Bowling first against the top team we got off to a great start. Matt Spalding (0/17) and Simon Smyth (3/22) restricted them to 2/28 off the first 13 overs on a good batting deck. ARL recovered during the middle overs, then the breaks were put on again at the end by Peter Stott (3/27). ARL were all out for 152 in the 39th over.

Leigh Van den Brooke and Gav Taylor (50) got us off to a solid start. This was converted to 2 for 82 in the 25th over, but then things started to go wrong. A steady run of wickets saw us bowled out in the 39th over for 132. It was a typically tough low scoring game against the champions of the last four years. We can’t miss the top 4 but would like to beat 6th placed Hornsby next week.

A2 195 lost to St Ives 3/198 – match report to follow but a big loss to St Ives that will see us move to 3rd spot in the table.

Colts
Red 8/172 lost to Vs Hornsby – certainly one that got away. In a really solid batting display we set the foundations for a victory with a good score. Rob Aitken continued his great form with 52, Tom Blissenden contributed with 26 and Daniel Brain 18. Hornsby attacked from the beginning. However, work commitments and fortunate AC/DC ticketholders meant that we defended with only 9 fielders for most of the innings. Notwithstanding victory still looked probable but a dubious rejection of a stumping appeal proved decisive. It's been a disrupted season but if we can build momentum leading into the Finals we might cause some damage. Finally, thanks to Taki Manolelis for helping us out. He was a dynamo in the field, covering enormous territory for our numerically depleted team, executed an excellent direct hit run out and took two wickets.

Blue 126 lost to Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee 9/156 – details to come.

B1 138 lost to Berowra 9/139 – an important match for us to stay in contention for the minor premiership. Chris won his first toss in five attempts this season and elected to bat. It was our first hit in a month and it showed. We struggled to build any partnerships and gave our wickets away too easily. We eventually fell for a disappointing 138 in the 39th over, our worst batting performance of the season. Best with the bat were Tim Millington (37), Matt Scoular (25) and Scott Jobson (20).

Missing key bowlers again we had it all to do in the field. We fought hard and only just came up short with Berowra passing our total with one wicket in hand. Best with the ball were Chris Thorndyke (3/34), Matt Thorndyke (2/20) and James Kealy (2/26). It was promising to be far from our best and almost come away with the points. We have second place secured, but will need some results go our way to sneak into first place.

B2 8/188 lost to Berowra 211 – playing a one dayer this week because of no play being possible last week due to the wet weather, we probably put up our worst performance of the year in the field. The bowling was way too short, we dropped 6 or 7 catches and were just generally flat in all aspects. Best of our bowlers was Geoff Richards with 2/18 with Pete Flook and James McBrien (both 2/44) the only other multiple wicket takers.

Chasing down 211 in 35 overs was always going to be a huge ask, and our fortunate position well clear on top of the ladder allowed us the luxury of experimenting with the order before the finals. As a consequence however, this resulted in us needing around 140 from the last 16 overs, but we went out there gave it a shake. Geoff Richards scored 32 up the top before Lachlan McBrien (25) and Adam Walter (26) belted a 50 partnership in just 5 overs, but when they were both dismissed with consecutive balls, our task became that much harder. The changing of the order almost worked when James McBrien came in and smashed 37* in the last 5 overs, but it was too little too late. If there is one silver lining, it is how close we did get in a game that we never deserved to win, giving us confidence that our best cricket will beat these guys in a likely semi final showdown. The boys now know that nearing the business end of the season, we can’t just turn up and expect to win, and will be raring to go next week to get back in the winner’s circle before the finals.

C1 4/120 defeated Castle Hill RSL 117 – a big game for us to consolidate a place in the Finals and we did it in style. Playing on a slow Northholm runs were only going to be scored with lofted shots and we did this better than Castle hill. In the bowling John Steel took 2/12, Chris Ireland 2/21 and Andrew Watt 2/22 with other wickets spread. The good bowling was matched by generally very good fielding that took almost everything hit in the air – none better thjan Eric Junkkari who was brilliant. Our turn to bat and we cruised past them with 5 overs to go. Eric (46*) and Andrew Ireland (40) dominated in every aspect to deliver one of our more comprehensive wins of the season against a team that needed to win grab a spot in the top 4.

C2 84 and 2/47 defeated Kissing Point 48 and 160 – after winning on first innings last week we were trying for an outright. We continued batting from last week, and were dismissed in our first innings for 84 – a 36 run lead. We had Kissing Point on the ropes at 6/36 but then took the foot off the pedal and were punished with a 90 run 7th wicket partnership. We finally dismissed Kissing Point for 160 on a perfect batting day. Best bowling was by Jacques Visser with 4/28 in 18 overs and Chris Williamson with 3/32 in 12 overs. With only 9 overs available to chase down a 124 run lead we decided to get some batting practice, in the lead up to the semis, and managed to score 2/47 (P. Heidegger 38 no) before wrapping up the day.

C3
White 3/106 defeated St Ives 97 – St Ives - in a match we had to win to ensure the minor premiership, we were obliged by an understrength St Ives side who would only be able to have 9 players for the day (4 of whom would be 45 mins late). So we obliged them - won the toss & sent them in. After a few early problems with their top order, Chris Creais bowled superbly to block up one end (1/2 off 5 overs). He was well supported by Kramer Richards who after taking some early stick, came back strongly to finish with 4/36. We took some excellent catches to dismiss St Ives for 97. We were never troubled in our run chase, with all the top 5 making double-figures. Best as usual was Brendan Harkin with 33 not out, taking his season aggregate to over 400 runs. We passed them with 13 overs and 7 wickets up our sleeve.

Blue 301 defeated Berowra – we picked up where we left off last week, with Gary Robinson once again supporting the batsmen in the middle with him. We were able to add onto last weeks score & ended the day on 301. Gary finished with another not out on 27 & Jon van Blerk on 43. The bowling got off to a great start with Vishnu diving to take a great catch. Arun Kumar was in devastating form today by bagging the first 4 wickets. We had some spectacular catches by, Vikas, Claudio, Nat & Chetan, but at the same time we dropped quite a few catches as well. Ian was not going to be out done & took the next 3 wickets. Arun finished with 4/27, Ian on 3/47, followed by Vikas & Nat finishing with a wicket each.

D1 89 and 3/149 lost to St Ives 96 and 8/181 dec – we got close today but it was always going to be miracle, chasing 186 to win outright in 24 overs. We lost first innings after suffering 2 injuries, which in the end could have been the difference between a win and the 6 runs needed. A top class effort by Allan Raffel 94 and Lachlan Vile 27 with the bat and with the ball, Manod Wickramasinghe 2/6 and Lachlan Vile 2/44 were the pick of the bowlers. We are up against 6th placed team next week and will hope to put this game behind us and look to build some momentum heading into the finals.

D2 79 and 40 lost outright to Kissing Point –8/336 dec – match report to follow but a comprehensive loss to one of the top teams.

Player of the Year
The regular updates have now been closed off for the season with the winner announced at the Presentation Night.

So long, farewell and thanks a million
Our Club is fortunate to have very many special people who contribute so much to making the Club what it is today. A standout is Geoff Starr (B2 and U16 Red Coach) and one of the 'good guys' in our Club. At the end of this season Geoff will hang up his coach’s hat for the last time.

This will bring to an end a very long standing commitment to our Club. Geoff has been coaching since his oldest son Tim started playing Kanga back in 1998-1999 season. He has coached both his boys’ teams continuously since then to now, that’s 12 years! Most of the time coaching two teams! A better achievement still is that all the boys in the Team’s he coaches keep coming back year after year – a far more important result than looking at win/loss ratio’s.

A very special effort Geoff.

The joys of Managing a Colts Team
Spare a thought for Evan Hutchings who manages our Colts Red team. Faced with a must win game we ended up fielding with 9 players due to a combination of work and AC/DC commitments that saw the opposition run down our competitive score. That’s the way it goes.

Club News: Round 13, Day 2 (13th February 2010)

Wet Weather line
There appears to be an old wet weather 'phone number floating around that is causing some grief to an elderly couple who were inundated with calls on the weekend.

It would be appreciated if everyone sued the following number only:

Weather line number is 8230 0144

Greenway update
If you want to see a wet pitch then have a look at Greenway taken on Saturday after the Friday night deluge. It is worth seeing. Anyway the result of this is that after the current photo on the website was shown to Council they have they have agreed to relay the pitch to make it higher and re-astro turf it in time for next season.

Net repairs
The nets at the WPH Sports Club are being repaired next week. We are having the torn surface where the batter takes guard replaced in all 3 nets. And having the wire surrounds either replaced or repaired. Not sure if the astro has already been done but given fine weather it will be completed.

Senior Competition Survey
The Senior Competition is running a Survey of all Registered players to get input into the way the Competition is run next season. Al Senior players will get the survey by email this week and need to respond to Steve Wilson by Sunday 26th February. We encourage everyone to spend a few minutes filling out the survey as it is our chance to determine what the Comp will look like next season.

One for the diaries:
• When: Sunday 14th March
• Where: Campbell Park (Cherrybrook Community Centre is the wet weather fallback)

Another one for the diaries:

• Where: Castle Hill RSL (Sovereign Room)
• Time: 7.30 pm kickoff

This is one of the highlights of the year and every year it just gets better. Players, families and friends are most welcome. One of the good things also is the large number of partners and parents who turn up with the younger players especially. More info will follow on this one so stay tuned.

Juniors
A great bowling effort by Vineet Suri (U13 Green) two weeks ago saw him take 6/0 off 4 overs against our Red side at Glenhaven. While not the best bowling performance in our Juniors history it is an outstanding effort – well done Vineet.

The season has started again but were also washed out on the weekend. The standing of our Teams follows with 1 Round to go before the Semi-Finals:

• U16’s: 1st (White), 5th (Red) and 6th (Blue)
• U15’s - 4th (Blue), 7th (White), 11th (Green)
• U14’s - 3rd (Blue), 4th (Red), 5th (Green) and 11th (White)
• U13’s 1st (Gold), 4th (Green), 9th (red), 11th (Blue), 14th (White)
• U12’s - 3rd (Red), 4th (Blue), 10th (Green), 11th (Gold)
• U11’s - 2nd (Gold), 4th (Blue), 8th (Green), 14th (Red)

U10 and U9’s play a non competition game.

Seniors
After a weekend of heavy rain most games were called off with a one-dayer to be played next weekend. The results are:

A1 Vs ARL – A1 was always going to be cancelled after Friday’s night’s rain. Fingers crossed that this 3 Vs 1 match gets underway next weekend.

A2 Vs St Ives – another blockbuster washed out. This time a 3 Vs 2 match with the winner going to 2nd place. By the way, have a look at the photo gallery to see the state of Greenway Park after the rain.

Colts
Red Vs Hornsby – another washout in a 3 Vs =4 game. Maybe next weekend.

Blue Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee – another washout. This time a =4 Vs 1 match. This is an important one with only one game to go for the Semi’s – probably the most important game for us this round in terms of the Semi’s.

B1 Vs Berowra – game washed out at Warrina Street Oval in a 2 Vs 4 shootout.

B2 Vs Berowra – a further washout in a big game – a 2 Vs 4 match-up.

C1 Vs Castle Hill RSL – washed out with a 1-dayer next weekend. This is a2 Vs 6 game.

C2 9/80 defeated Kissing Point 48 – for the second week in a row we have were scheduled to play on a field which was wrongly allocated. On arrival at Holland reserve we were faced with a “fields are closed” sign and had to hastily search for an alternative venue.

We found Kenthurst 2 field and managed to get the game under way an hour late. We won the toss and sent Kissing Point in to bat in humid, overcast conditions. Once again we bowled well, with Fergus Waterson picking up 5/7 of 7 overs and Jacques Visser with 3/14 off 7, to have Kissing Point all out for 48 in 26 overs. When we started out batting innings the overhead conditions which had helped us earlier now made things difficult and we were struggling at 39/8 before a 9th wicket partnership between Peter Lees (29*) and Mark Bell (10) got us across the line to win the match on first innings. We will continue batting next week on 9/80 with a real chance of getting an outright for this one.

C3
White Vs St Ives – a 1 Vs 6 match-up played on Sunday.

Blue 8/251 Vs Berowra – well, after a team bonding session in the Central Coast, we got to Berowra and won the toss & decided to bat. Chetan & Mike Fitzpatrick pushed the ball around in the wet out field, followed by Vikas. Claudio came in & was just getting settled before he had to walk back to the sheds. Vishnu & Michael were looking good, when Vishnu was caught. Michael supported both Rahul and Arun, before leaving the pitch on a great 75. Gary & Jonathan were able to bat the day out, so we will be back next week to try and complete what we have started.

D1 8/71 Vs St Ives 96 – this is a game we have to win in a 1 Vs 7 game. Playing on a slow Glenhaven track in ankle high grass, we started off reasonably well and managed to restrict St Ives to 96 all out, but picked up a few injuries to key players along the way which forced us to shuffle the batting order, and in the end we find ourselves in a spot of bother. We are still in it given that our regular number 3 batsmen (Allan Raffel) is due in next so hopefully we can hold in there to chase down the remaining runs. Key performances from Matt Dick with 4-14 and David Behelavanas 2-14.

D2 76 lost to Kissing Point –4/221 – Kissing Point won toss & bowled. Not our best day. Sent in to bat on the greasiest of wickets we were in trouble from the first ball, losing both openers without scoring and, in the circumstances, doing well to post a total of 76, Sam Thariani top scoring with 23. In reply Kissing Point made short work of plundering our bowlers, the short boundaries of this little field providing a bonus for batsmen prepared to hit over the top. Striving to stem the tide, Nikhil Suresh (2-46) and Ankit Grover (1-27) did a great job in difficult conditions, assisted by a good spell from Aparajit Bithiroy (1-36), claiming his first wicket for the club. Ben Pilipowski excelled in the field with two good catches at mid-on and mid-off.

With our semi-final hopes put to rest, our challenge next week will be to deny Kissing Point the outright they so badly want: a great opportunity to rediscover the disciplined and purposeful batting we know we are capable of.

Player of the Year
The regular updates have now been closed off for the season with the winner announced at the Presentation Night.

Low scoring wins
The C2 game against Kenthurst was in the running for the lowest scoring result in our history. At 8/39 chasing 48 this was looking good until we skipped away. For the records, the lowest scoring result was on the 1/12/2000 when our A1 side Vs Castle Hill were rolled for 31 and then came out and rolled CHRSL for 53.

This game did make the record books though as it is the 3rd lowest score that we have dismissed a C2 side for in our history. The lower scores are 12 Vs Arcadia in 1967 and Kenthurst @ Kenthurst in the 2005 Final (19/3/2005).

Thinking of Premierships
For the 11 of our 12 Teams still in the running to play in the Semi Finals the following list shows our last Teams to take out a premiership. Good luck this season:

• A1 – 2002/03 season (Chris Thomas was the Captain)
• A2 – 2008-09 (Matt Jobson)
• Colts – 2007-08 (Nick Bennett)
• B1 – 2006-07 (Dale van den Boogaard)
• B2 – 2000-01 (Mark Taylor)
• C1 – 2003-04 (Dale van den Boogaard)
• C2 – 2008-09 (Andrew Fiedler)

Congratulations
For the 1st time, our Association is playing in a representative game between the HK&HDCA Vs the Sydney Morning Cricket Association on Sunday 28th February. The match is being played at Jubilee Oval Glebe. It is an Open Age Representative fixture in which the best players presently not playing A1 (the top grade) are selected from both Teams. Being the inaugural fixture is good enough but to be selected in this group is outstanding. The selections are the best young talent in the Association who are well on the pathway to significant cricket achievement. The West Penno players playing are:
• Daniel Brain (Colts)
• Sujith Dissanayake (A2)
• Amir Marzouk (A2) – was chosen but is unavailable

Well done fella’s.

Wet grounds
Have a look at the Photo gallery to see Greenway in all its flooded glory on Saturday. Apart from being a good snapshot of the weekend round we are using it as a justification for a new pitch that is actually placed above the level of the surrounding ground.

Net repairs
The nets at the WPH Sports Club are being repaired next week. We are having the torn surface where the batter takes guard replaced in all 3 nets. This will now happen on Tuesday 9th February so the nets will be out of action all day Tuesday – given fine weather.

• U11’s - 2nd (Gold), 4th (Blue), 8th (Green), 14th (Red)

U10 and U9’s play a non competition game.

Seniors
After a weekend of heavy rain most games were draws except D1 where they actually got underway and won. The results are:

A1 9/297 drew with Kenthurst – no play on the turf was possible. While still established in the top 4 the fact that every other game got a result last weekend is a pain making next weekend’s big match-up against ARL who are the 4 season in a row premier a big game for us.

A2 179 drew with Kenthurst 2/33 – no play possible at Dural Park. Next week’s game is against St Ives in a 3 Vs 2 game that will go a long way to determine the make-up of the top 4.

Colts
Red defeated on forfeit Kissing Point – next weekend we play Hornsby in a 3 Vs 5 game.

Blue drew with Berowra – a Sunday game but most unlikely that we play. Next game is against the top team Normanhurst-Warrawee in a 4 Vs 1 match.

B1 drew with Kissing Point 9/234 – another washout so a real shame against the top team and in a game that we rated our chances. Next week we play Berowra in a 2 Vs 4 shootout.

B2 180 drew with Castle Hill RSL 1/12 – another washout. Next week we our game is against Berowra in a 2 Vs 4 game.

C1 226 drew with Kissing Point – another washout in a very tight competition. A real shame as we were playing the last placed Team. Next week is another big game against Castle Hill in a 2 Vs 6 game.

C2 130 defeated Castle Hill RSL 116 – after a delay of 1 hr to get the pitch dry we resumed bowling against Castle Hill who were on 0/17 from last week. We kept the bowling tight and managed to dismiss them in the 53rd over for 116. A great display of swing bowling from Jacques Visser, who bowled 16 consecutive overs from one end, to post figures of 7/45. This is the 131st time in our history that 7 wickets or better has been taken in an innings – well done Jacques. He was well supported by Nik Patel (1/31 off 14) and Chris Williamson (1/30 off 14). A good win for us leading into the back end of the season.

C3
White 8/343 drew with Mt Colah – in what was looming as a crushing victory no play was possible. Next week we play St Ives in a 1 Vs 6 match-up.

Blue drew with Kissing Point 112 – no play this week. Next week we play Berowra in a 2 Vs 5 game.

D1 7/248 defeated outright Kissing Point 113 & 106 – we were keen to collect maximum points against bottom placed kissing point, hence endured a stop start affair in the field in the rain. In the end, mission accomplished as we collected 10 points which now puts us joint first. It was not easy bowling with a ball that resembled a block of soap so we brought on the slower bowlers aka Perry Waldron, (the pick of the bowlers), to break a crucial partnership and finish with 3/9. Whilst this win puts us joint first, we hope to maintain our winning streak and improve our run rate in the 2 remaining games. Next week we play St Ives in a 1 Vs 7 match.

D2 181 drew with Normanhurst-Warrawee 0/2 – no play. Next week we play Kissing Point in a 7 Vs 3 match.

Player of the Year
The regular updates have now been closed off for the season with the winner announced at the Presentation Night.

T20 it is not
Spare a thought for Peter Heidegger’s C2 Team who had the misfortune to play at Glenhaven on Sunday. With Caterson 2 it is the slowest ground in the Comp. Anyway, our boys batted last week and scored 130 in 61 overs. This was positively rapid scoring on the same ground for the Saturday game between our Blue side and Kissing Point who scored 112 in 70 overs and this included 3 sixers!

Winning friends
Peter Westerberg (D2 Captain) had to front the Association on Tuesday night to resolve a Protest over the result – was it a tie, win or loss – brought about by the Opposition who claimed a win. But no one ever wins an argument about score books when Peter is concerned.

The result of the appeal was a tie – a win for us. But to quote Peter:
“Shook hands with opposite number as you would expect & disappointed committee members who were hoping to see a brawl.

As Shakespeare put it:

Rightly to be great
Is not to stir without great argument,
But greatly to find quarrel in a straw
When honour's at the stake.

The club's honour is safe.”
