West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club Est. 1930
West Pennant Hills Cherrybrook Cricket Club was formed in 1930 and played in the Parramatta District Junior Cricket Association. After a break during the War years we reformed in 1946 as part of the Hornsby Kuring-gai Cricket Association. We are located in north-west Sydney, NSW, Australia. WPHCCC is one of the largest cricket Clubs in NSW with over 60 teams across all grades, including junior boys, girls (both 9 to 16 years) and non-competition Kanga cricket for under-8's. There are also many teams in the All age Men's competition playing from A1 to D2 Grades. [John Steel, hitting a 2nd ball six Vs Castle Hill @ Headen Park 4th October 2008. ]

Club News: Round 12, Day 2 (7th February 2010)

Wet Weather line
There appears to be an old wet weather 'phone number floating around that is causing some grief to an elderly couple who were inundated with calls on the weekend.

It would be appreciated if everyone used the following number only:

Weather line number is 8230 0144

Congratulations
For the 1st time, our Association is playing in a representative game between the HK&HDCA Vs the Sydney Morning Cricket Association on Sunday 28th February. The match is being played at Jubilee Oval Glebe. It is an Open Age Representative fixture in which the best players presently not playing A1 (the top grade) are selected from both Teams. Being the inaugural fixture is good enough but to be selected in this group is outstanding. The selections are the best young talent in the Association who are well on the pathway to significant cricket achievement. The West Penno players playing are:
• Daniel Brain (Colts)
• Sujith Dissanayake (A2)
• Amir Marzouk (A2) – was chosen but is unavailable

Well done fella’s.

Wet grounds
Have a look at the Photo gallery to see Greenway in all its flooded glory on Saturday. Apart from being a good snapshot of the weekend round we are using it as a justification for a new pitch that is actually placed above the level of the surrounding ground.

Net repairs
The nets at the WPH Sports Club are being repaired next week. We are having the torn surface where the batter takes guard replaced in all 3 nets. This will now happen on Tuesday 9th February so the nets will be out of action all day Tuesday – given fine weather.

Senior Competition Survey
The Senior Competition is running a Survey of all Registered players to get input into the way the Competition is run next season. Al Senior players will get the survey by email this week and need to respond to Steve Wilson by Sunday 26th February. We encourage everyone to spend a few minutes filling out the survey as it is our chance to determine what the Comp will look like next season.

Presentation days
Juniors
One for the diaries:
• When: Sunday 14th March
• Where: Campbell Park (Cherrybrook Community Centre is the wet weather fallback)
• Time: 11.00 am or 2.00 pm at Cherrybrook if it is wet

This is a big day with upwards of 600 people coming along with free drinks, sausage sizzle and entertainment for the kids. More details will come from your Team Manager so stay tuned.

Seniors
Another one for the diaries:
• When: Friday 7th May
• Where: Castle Hill RSL (Sovereign Room)
• Time: 7.30 pm kickoff

This is one of the highlights of the year and every year it just gets better. Players, families and friends are most welcome. One of the good things also is the large number of partners and parents who turn up with the younger players especially. More info will follow on this one so stay tuned.

Juniors
The season has started again but were also washed out on the weekend. The standing of our Teams follows:

• U16’s: 1st (White), 5th (red) and 6th (Blue)
• U15’s - 4th (Blue), 7th (White), 11th (Green)
• U14’s - 3rd (Blue), 4th (Red), 5th (Green) and 11th (White)
• U13’s 1st (Gold), 4th (Green), 9th (red), 11th (Blue), 14th (White)
• U12’s - 3rd (Red), 4th (Blue), 10th (Green), 11th (Gold)
• U11’s - 2nd (Gold), 4th (Blue), 8th (Green), 14th (Red)

U10 and U9’s play a non competition game.

Seniors
After a weekend of heavy rain most games were draws except D1 where they actually got underway and won. The results are:

A1 9/297 drew with Kenthurst – no play on the turf was possible. While still established in the top 4 the fact that every other game got a result last weekend is a pain making next weekend’s big match-up against ARL who are the 4 season in a row premier a big game for us.

A2 179 drew with Kenthurst 2/33 – no play possible at Dural Park. Next week’s game is against St Ives in a 3 Vs 2 game that will go a long way to determine the make-up of the top 4.

Colts
Red defeated on forfeit Kissing Point – next weekend we play Hornsby in a 3 Vs 5 game.

Blue drew with Berowra – a Sunday game but most unlikely that we play. Next game is against the top team Normanhurst-Warrawee in a 4 Vs 1 match.

B1 drew with Kissing Point 9/234 – another washout so a real shame against the top team and in a game that we rated our chances. Next week we play Berowra in a 2 Vs 4 shootout.

B2 180 drew with Castle Hill RSL 1/12 – another washout. Next week we our game is against Berowra in a 2 Vs 4 game.

C1 226 drew with Kissing Point – another washout in a very tight competition. A real shame as we were playing the last placed Team. Next week is another big game against Castle Hill in a 2 Vs 6 game.

C2 130 defeated Castle Hill RSL 116 – after a delay of 1 hr to get the pitch dry we resumed bowling against Castle Hill who were on 0/17 from last week. We kept the bowling tight and managed to dismiss them in the 53rd over for 116. A great display of swing bowling from Jacques Visser, who bowled 16 consecutive overs from one end, to post figures of 7/45. This is the 131st time in our history that 7 wickets or better has been taken in an innings – well done Jacques. He was well supported by Nik Patel (1/31 off 14) and Chris Williamson (1/30 off 14). A good win for us leading into the back end of the season.

C3
White 8/343 drew with Mt Colah – in what was looming as a crushing victory no play was possible. Next week we play St Ives in a 1 Vs 6 match-up.

Blue drew with Kissing Point 112 – no play this week. Next week we play Berowra in a 2 Vs 5 game.

D1 7/248 defeated outright Kissing Point 113 & 106 – we were keen to collect maximum points against bottom placed kissing point, hence endured a stop start affair in the field in the rain. In the end, mission accomplished as we collected 10 points which now puts us joint first. It was not easy bowling with a ball that resembled a block of soap so we brought on the slower bowlers aka Perry Waldron, (the pick of the bowlers), to break a crucial partnership and finish with 3/9. Whilst this win puts us joint first, we hope to maintain our winning streak and improve our run rate in the 2 remaining games. Next week we play St Ives in a 1 Vs 7 match.

D2 181 drew with Normanhurst-Warrawee 0/2 – no play. Next week we play Kissing Point in a 7 Vs 3 match.

Player of the Year
The regular updates have now been closed off for the season with the winner announced at the Presentation Night.

T20 it is not
Spare a thought for Peter Heidegger’s C2 Team who had the misfortune to play at Glenhaven on Sunday. With Caterson 2 it is the slowest ground in the Comp. Anyway, our boys batted last week and scored 130 in 61 overs. This was positively rapid scoring on the same ground for the Saturday game between our Blue side and Kissing Point who scored 112 in 70 overs and this included 3 sixers!

Winning friends
Peter Westerberg (D2 Captain) had to front the Association on Tuesday night to resolve a Protest over the result – was it a tie, win or loss – brought about by the Opposition who claimed a win. But no one ever wins an argument about score books when Peter is concerned.

The result of the appeal was a tie – a win for us. But to quote Peter:
“Shook hands with opposite number as you would expect & disappointed committee members who were hoping to see a brawl.

As Shakespeare put it:

Rightly to be great
Is not to stir without great argument,
But greatly to find quarrel in a straw
When honour's at the stake.

The club's honour is safe.”

Thinking of Premierships
For the 11 of our 12 Teams still in the running to play in the Semi Finals the following list shows our last Teams to take out a premiership. Good luck this season:

• A1 – 2002/03 season (Chris Thomas was the Captain)
• A2 – 2008-09 (Matt Jobson)
• Colts – 2007-08 (Nick Bennett)
• B1 – 2006-07 (Dale van den Boogaard)
• B2 – 2000-01 (Mark Taylor)
• C1 – 2003-04 (Dale van den Boogaard)
• C2 – 2008-09 (Andrew Fiedler)
• C3 – No Premierships – comp started 5 years ago
• D1 – 2003-04 (Roger Friend)
• D2 – 2006-07 (Rob McBrien)

Club News: Round 12 (30th January 2010)

Congratulations
The AW Green Shield is the elite U16 Grade Cricket Representative competition in Metropolitan Sydney, rated by Wikipedia as being the best U16 competition in the world. We had the following Junior players playing in this competition over the Christmas / New Year period and performing well:
• Daniel Anderson (Northern District) – U15 Blue
• James Madden(Northern District) - U15 Blue
• Bhavya Nanda (Gordon) – U15 White
• Alex Rashleigh (Sydney) – U16 Blue.

To be selected in the combined Green Shield Representative team to play the NSW Country champions is something really special. Congratulations to Alex Rashleigh who was selected in the 1st XII – the best of the best! This is outstanding and an achievement we are all very proud of Alex achieving.

Net repairs
The nets at the WPH Sports Club are being repaired next week. We are having the torn surface where the batter takes guard replaced in all 3 nets. This will happen on Wednesday 3rd February so the nets will be out of action all day Wednesday.

Thank you
A big acknowledgement to the Commonwealth Bank who has provided us with a $1,500 sponsorship to assist with the repairs to the nets. This is part of their ‘Grass Roots’ cricket program. We are very appreciative of this support and this has allowed us to repair the nets. Thanks CBA.

Juniors
The season starts again on Saturday 30/1/2010 when school resumes.

Seniors
The weekend Round results follow:

A1 9/297 Vs Kenthurst – batting first we wanted to get a big score against 4th placed St Ives. At 3/16b we were looking down the barrel as we have relied heavily on the top order to score so far this season. In a good workout for the Semi’s we powered to an impressive 1st innings total. Smokey Dawson was superb with 79, Peter Whitehead got his best score of the season and Nick Bennett is starting to deliver on his great potential with 60. Added to this a 33* from in-form all-rounder Simon Smyth we turned the game around. While the result is important the batting depth is more so with the big games coming up.

A2 179 Vs Kenthurst 2/33 – after a series of good games we had an off day against 1st placed Kenthurst but it could have been a lot worse. At 9/110 we were struggling. Apart for the 47 from Tim Rae who opened 6 players scored a combined 12 runs in aggregate. Well done Leigh van denBroeke who turned the corner with his batting with 20 in tough circumstances. Then enter Daniel Brain 20 and Dylan Brogan 44* batting at 9 and 10 who put on a 9th wicket partnership of 74. When we had them at 2/9 in reply momentum was going our way. With early wickets this game is still alive.

Colts
Red Vs Kissing Point – a shame but Kissing Point forfeited so no game for the next 2 weeks.

Blue Vs Berowra – a big match for us (4 Vs 2) but due to an Association mix-up with grounds this will now be played as a 1-dayer next Sunday.

B1 Vs Kissing Point 9/234 – a big match against 1st placed Kissing Point. With two key bowlers playing as Week 2 players who have taken a combined 40 wickets this season, it was a bad toss to lose. In a long day in the field we have kept Kissing Point to a par score of 9/234 at a fast Thornleigh Park. Scott Jobson was again superb taking 4/73 off 23 overs, including a 20 over opening spell, while Rowan Keating bowled a marathon 29 overs picking up 3/80 and was unlucky not to have a few more. We have one last wicket to take next week and with our strong batting line up are more than capable of chasing this total.

B2 180 Vs Castle Hill RSL 1/12 – sent into bat on a painfully slow Fred Caterson 2 oval the boys put together a very competitive total, which was probably worth another 100 runs on any other ground. The only way to score was to go aerial. Best with the bat was Geoff Richards with 50 and Geoff Starr 31. Solid contributions also from Tim Starr 20, Alex Connell & Duncan Moore 17 each and Mark Bennett 13. We had 15 overs at them before stumps with some excellent disciplined bowling from Ben McNamara, Mark Bennett & Geoff Richards (1/3) all combining well to create the pressure for a break through which resulted in a superb catch behind by Alex Connell. We are well positioned to convert this next week.

C1 226 Vs Kissing Point – the only game Kissing Point have won this season was the 1st round game against us so this was an important one to move solidly into the top 4. We got off to a very good start with 35 to take the edge off the opening bowlers. The next partnership between Kishore Rampersad (72) and Daniel Anderson (77) was 132 and took the game away Point. At 1/170 we were cruising. When this partnership was broken we lost a succession of wickets and finished with a par score that is worth around 250. The batting depth is strong but we probably took the bowling for granted after this big partnership and got out to a few soft dismissals that would not have happened in other games. If we bowl and field to our potential this should be enough to get us across the line.

C2 130 Vs Castle Hill RSL – after finding our field (Fred Caterson 2) occupied by squatters – who claimed to have Council approval for their game – we had to find an alternative ground. Glenhaven was available, so we all moved en masse to the lush and overgrown garden know as Glenhaven Oval. After searching for 5 minutes we found the tossed coin in the long grass. Unfortunately we lost the toss (apparently "tails never fails" - except when called by our C2 captain) and were put in to bat on a hot and very humid day. The bowling from Castle Hill was accurate and disciplined and with the ball swinging profusely we struggled our way to 130 all out in 60 overs.

Less than a handful of boundaries were scored and the total is certainly not un-defendable. Good contributions came from Narendra Kulkarni 42, Richard Cuskelly 30 not out and Peter Lees with 20. We then had a bowl at Castle Hill who finished the day on 17 without loss off their 12 overs. We look forward to significant lawn-mover problems occurring at Glenhaven council this week.

C3
White 8/343 Vs Mt Colah –a top 4 clash with us (1st) playing 4th placed Mt Colah. We had a good day at the office. Winning the toss and batting on a fast Annangrove oval, we took full advantage to finish 8/343 dec at stumps. There were many good contributions, with 2 major partnerships - 121 for the 2nd wicket between run-machines Pratah Sinnetamby (69) and Brendan Harkin (78) and 93 for the 6th wicket between Andrew Fiedler (72) & Daniel Fiedler (51 no). This was 16 yo Daniel's first 50 in seniors. We look forward to pressing home our advantage next week.

Blue Vs Kissing Point 112 – we on the toss (amazing!) and felt that weather conditions were best suited to field although this ground is a batters paradise. Kissing Point came with a very determined side and really dug deep from the outset. However, we were also up for the challenge. From the very first to the very last ball Kissing Point was subjected to "Shock & Awe". The bowling attack was disciplined and controlled throughout the game and gave the batsmen nothing all day. Kissing Point eventually waved their white flag after 72 overs were all out for 112. Although the job is only half done and a good performance is needed with the bat to secure the points, this fantastic display of bowling would have had the great Glen McGrath raising his eyebrows. Wicket takers were, Claudio van Blerk 3/16; Arun Kumar 3/42; Ian Nichol 2/5; Rahul Saberwhal 2/21.

D1 7/248 defeated on 1st inningsKissing Point 113 & 2/8 – after losing to Hornsby last week this is one we needed to get back on track against last placed Point. We lost the toss against Kissing Point who opted to bat first. Chris Grima was on fire today with bowling figures of 7/43 which ensured that we dismissed Kissing Point for 113. This was only the 30th time in our history that a bowler has taken 7 wickets or better in a game – great stuff Chris. With the bat, Allan Raffel 104* (our 350th century), ensured that we have a good lead heading into week 2. Other notable performances with the bat were Lachlan Vile 34 and Faisal Shamsi 30. A top effort from everyone in the field provided a satisfying performance and if we can repeat this next week, we should get an outright win that will cement our 2nd place position, and if other results go our way, we have a chance of creeping into first.

D2 181 Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee 0/2 – a big game for us against 1st placed Normo. Match results will be updated once the report is to hand.

400 wickets
Congratulations to Greg Stoneham who took his 400th wicket (349 of these have been taken in A1 grade). This is a rare achievement. How about this for career stats:
• 2,032.5 overs with 379 maidens
• 401 wickets @ 17.18
• Plus 3486 runs @ 22.49 including a double century

In our 60 year history only 4 other players have taken more wickets:
• 623 – David Carey
• 543 – Ray McDonald
• 497 – Ken Donaldson
• 461 – Mark Taylor

Well done Greg who ranks as one of our finest ever players.

Experience plus
Think about this one. The C1 side that played almost the perfect game last weekend had an attack with the following experience levels:
• Greg Stoneham – 401 wickets
• Eric Junkkari – 329 wickets
• John Steel – 91wickets
• Kishore Rampersad – 282 wickets
• John Mitchell – 54 wickets

A total of 1,157 wickets in experience – wow! We don’t have records of this type of info but it would take a lot of beating. Missing from the side was Craig Hutchinson who has 118 wickets.

In summary, the team that took the field last Saturday (Craig Hutchinson is to come back) had:
• A combined age of 512 years (including a 14 year old!)
• 1,320 aggregate wickets (including those players who did not bowl)
• 22,900 aggregate runs.

Brother’s in arms
Great performance from Matt (A2) and Scott (B1) Jobson who put in match winning bowling performances last weekend. Matt took 5/15 and Scott 5/29 in outstanding performances. Well done fella’s.

Dropping like flies
In a C3 Round 9 game between our White and Blue Teams 3 players managed to get injured – all self-inflicted injuries:
• Marcus Creais (White’s) after bowling 9 balls went down with a crook back & couldn't bowl any further in the match
• Michael Mahinthin (Blue’s) managed to pull a low full toss into his mouth & retired hurt. Went to hospital to get a mouthful of stitches
• Felix Quah (Blue’s) when going for a quick single slid his bat in, got it caught in the ground as he dived, and had the handle wedge in his ribs and was carried off injured – all this during the Blues 1st innings.
But….all 3 players resumed the game in the second innings to either field (very sore Michael & Felix) or bat (Marcus (hit winning runs). We might ne clumsy but we breed them tough.

The ‘Great Converter’
Spare a thought for Kishore Rampersad (C1) who batted for around 50 overs to score 72 in hot conditions. Kishore is one of our more ‘experienced’ players and as the innings went along the running between wickets became progressively slower. Towards the end of this marathon innings and with possible all run fours being turned into ‘sharp’ two’s the comment was made about the conversion factor.

‘I’ve been everywhere’
Rowan Keating (B1) bowled 29 overs of pace on the weekend in hot conditions due to the absence of 2 of our top wicket takers from this game. There was some slight compensation though as he fielded at mid-on / mid-off / fine-leg all day. In fact he spent 37 overs at fine Leg, 4 at deep mid-off and 5 at mid-on. Add to this the 29 overs Rowan bowled the only running he had to do was in his bowling delivery – a small compensation for this huge effort.

Player of the Year
The regular updates have now been closed off for the season with the winner announced at the Presentation Night. As one last look, the top ranked players as at the end of Round 10 follow. Given that points are allocated 3-2-1 anyone can win including a number of players not on the list.

Club News: Round 11, Day 1 (24th January 2010)

CBA Grant
A big thank you to the Commonwealth Bank of Australia who granted us $1,500 as part of their Grass Roots initiative to help with repairs to our training facilities. Our priority is to repair the nets at the Sports Club with work getting underway on both turf repair and wire shortly. Thanks Commonwealth.

Well done
Congratulations to Brendan Ham who made his 1st Grade debut for Northern District last weekend. We have a long history of West Penno players playing 1st Grade with Brendan being the latest to make this wonderful achievement.

It is also worth noting that playing in this game were 2 other West Penno boys – Rob Watts and Daniel Friedrich. So just on 25% of the entire 1st Grade side came from our Club.

Juniors
The season starts again on Saturday 30/1/2010 when school resumes.

Seniors
The Seniors played in 40+ degree heat on the weekend. Read how they went.

A1 101 lost to Vs Berowra 186 – in a 3 Vs 5 game it wasn’t our day. Missing a few key players, we were beaten convincingly by 5th placed Berowra. Simon Smyth was the only star – taking 5 for 9 and second top scoring with 23. James Makin starred with the bat though scoring 29. Congratulations to both Rob Aitkin and Adam Hutchings who both made their A1 debuts up from Colts and played well. Adam also took his first A-grade wicket.

A2 8/125 defeated ARL 121 – an important game for us to consolidate a position in the top 4 and also to beat the Team coming last with a few key players out. This was a good win but we just got there. We bowled and fielded well to roll ARL. Best bowling came from Matt Jobson who took 5/15 in 7 overs – a fantastic performance in the tough conditions. Other very good performances were from Rohan Dixit 2/38 and tight spells from Amir Marzouk 0/13 (8 overs), Sujith 1/14 (5), Michael Quieros 1/11. Our turn to bat and we just got there. The match winning performance came from Amir Marzouk who scored 38. At 7/92 the game was in the balance but a valuable partnership from Tim Leyshon and Suji got us across the line.

Colts
Red Vs Berowra – washed out day - no play.

Blue 8/84 lost to Hornsby 5/96 – a low scoring game played at Turramurra Oval – need we say more. Match details to follow.

B1 3/181 defeated Galston-Glenorie 9/171 – a bad start to the game after losing a player to illness late on Friday night and being sent into the field in the heat with 10 men. Galston-Glenorie started well working their way to 0/41 from 10 overs with us toiling away in temperatures approaching 40 degrees. Scott Jobson came into the attack and had immediate effect dismissing both openers as Galston were reduced to 2/43. The heat was intense and it showed with a couple of catches going down as Galston worked their way to 2/108 from 28 overs. We fought back with wickets to AJ and Scott to have Galston 6/138 but some late hitting saw them to 9/171 from 40 overs. We let them get a few more than we should have, but with ten men in the heat our effort was outstanding. Scott was the pick of the bowlers with 5/29 from 8 overs, while Ryan Cherrie 2/29 and Andrew Joyce 2/39 provided great support and Matt Thorndyke bowled a great spell of spin bowling and was unlucky not to have a few wickets.

We started our innings quickly as Andrew Joyce smashed 20 off 9 balls (five 4's) before falling. We lost another quick wicket and looked in trouble at 2/32 before great 73-run partnership by Tim Millington and Matt Scoular turned the match in our favour. Both were feeling the effects of the heat, but both pushed through taking the game away from Galston. When Tim fell for a great 37 we were well placed at 3/105 with Galston were struggling in the heat. Scott joined Matt at the crease and we never looked back. We cruised to victory with six overs remaining, with Matt hitting a six over mid wicket to win the match. Matt was superb with 90 not out while Scott was great in support with 19 not out. A gutsy win in hot conditions and a well deserved six points.

B2 4/151 defeated Hornsby 148 – a big game for us, against the only team we were yet to beat, a win could potentially put us 15 points clear of Hornsby on top of the ladder. And that is exactly what we did. After losing the toss and being sent in to field on a scorching Greenway Park, it was always going to be tough, and this was certainly the case as they raced to 0/51 before we got the first breakthrough. After that however, some very tight and disciplined bowling from us saw wickets tumble regularly and we bowled them out in the 37th over for 148. Chief destroyer was Ben McNamara (3/21 off 6), with Geoff Richards (2/22 off 7), Tim Starr (2/27 off 8), James McBrien (1/22 off 5) and Mark Bennett (1/40 off 7.1) also chipping in with wickets.

As we went out to bat, we knew that if we could avoid a major collapse we would win in a canter and it was the 2 Starr’s, Tim (44 off 40) and Geoff (57* off 55) that guided us home with 11 overs to spare, but more importantly before the seemingly imminent rain arrived. Other minor knocks from Adam Walter (17 off 14) and Duncan Moore (10 off 30) helped us cruise to a comfortable win.

C1 7/214 defeated Berowra 154 – almost the perfect game with everything going to plan - winning the toss and batting in the wet through to an imposing score off 35 overs, good fielding and excellent catching. This was John Steel’s match. He scored 106* coming in at number 3 and was well supported by Greg Stoneham 29* and numerous other good starts. Our bowling and fielding matched the quality of the batting. John Steel again dominated in taking 4/24 from 7 overs and got good backup from Greg Stoneham 2/23 and other wickets spread. This was our most dominant performance of the season against a side just out of the top 4. If we can remain at anything approaching this standard for the rest of the year we will be right in the Finals race.

C2 3/148 defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee Berowra 143 – Normo won the toss and elected to bat in difficult conditions. For the first 20 overs we kept them quiet with Jacques Visser (1/8), Nikunj Patel (2/15) and Chris Williamson (0/19 off 8 overs) bowling extremely tidy overs. After the drinks break Normo upped the ante and some lusty hitting was finally brought undone by the Kulkarni’s (with Narendra finishing with 3 for 26) and Mark Bell with 2/12. We closed their innings at 143 just inside the 40 over mark.

Chris Williamson and Richie Cuskelly got us off to a steady start but at 3 for 40 after 15 overs we clearly needed to increase the run rate. And we fortunately had the two senior members of the team to see us home, with Peter Lees with 57* and Peter Heidegger with 46* producing an unbeaten 107 run partnership, getting the remaining runs inside the 35th over. A great win for the team to consolidate our top 4 position

C3
White 5/137 defeated Berowra 136 – the Berowra team were there for a good time not a long time, racking up their runs in 21 overs. Fortunately for us we also racked up 10 wickets to have them all out in that time. It was the day for unusual wicket taking deliveries. 3 wickets fell to full tosses (2 caught, 1 bowled), a short delivery that should havebeen hooked to the boundary bounced off the gloves on to the stumps & a rebound off the wicket keepers gloves was caught by first slip. But despite the heat the boys stuck to their guns and polished the opposition off for a very gettable 136, especially on the small Arcadia ground. We mixed the batting order up a bit to give some guys a bat that had not had much of a go. Despite the mixed order we managed to chase down the runs very comfortably thanks to a glorious knock of 94 by Taki Manolelis, falling just short of his century with about 10 runs to go. A great win by the boys in hot conditions to keep our unbeaten stretch going.

Blue 6/149 lost to Normanhurst-Warrawee 4/152 – well, we listened to the weather report & won the Toss eventually, obviously too good to be true. We went in to bat, Russell Smith opened & persevered through the heat and managed to see batsmen come and go before retiring. In came Claudio van Blerk, Mr Dependable, with shoulders growing by the week, due to carrying the team with his batting performance with 64, this week was no different as he had another great knock in that stifling heat. Michael Mahinthin managed a quick 21 & Arun stabilized the tail end with 23. We managed to get 149.

Going in to bowl, early conditions were tough and did not get any better when the weather did finally cool down. We could not breakthrough their openers early & we allowed them to get some runs early.as the game went on we eventually managed to break a few partnerships, but in the end it was not enough. Normanhurst won the game by reaching the target with over’s to spare

D1 8/153 lost to Hornsby 7/188 – whilst there was a bit of experimenting leading into the finals, this was one of those games that we would like to put behind us. We started well but dropped 7 catches, which meant that Hornsby were able to post a competitive score of 188. Pick of the bowlers were Julian Raffel 2-19, Marco Delgado 1-17 and David Behelevanas 1-22. Our run chase was slow due to some good line and length bowling from Hornsby and we were unable to create any decent partnership and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. We’re still in the top 4 but need to work hard for the remainder of the comp to rectify our fielding.

D2 150 lost to Vs St Ives 6/152 – details to follow.

Thanks for coming
Tearaway A1 quick Scott Henderson has already taken 20 wickets this season and intimidates the opposition with his pace and 6’ 7’’ (or thereabouts) height. Last weekend he broke a stump while taking a wicket. An email from his Captain Smokey Dawson says it all:

“Hendo broke a stump on Saturday, should we try and get by with just three stumps for the rest of the year. I doubt it will happen again”.

At least we know that you can do it again Hendo.

Not the day to do it
Spare a thought for Allan Raffel (C2). In very hot conditions Allan tested out his stamina in bowling 5 no balls and 2 wides in his opening over. This is a long way short of our longest over with the record being held by Chris Cavanagh (A2) who bowled 21 balls in an over at Rofe Park in 1983. The real effort came from bowling a 13 ball over in 40+ degree heat. For his penance his captain (Marco) then asked him to keep wickets.

Wedding bells
Our Club Chairperson, Barry McDonald, bumped into an old friend the other day while taking a walk at Terrigal – Craig Willmott – a long term West Penno player until he left to work in India in 2006/07. The good news is that Craig is getting married next Friday (29th) to a woman (just joking) who comes from Leeds.

Better news still is that he is coming back to Australia to live and that the bride to be will allow him to play cricket. So with a bit of luck the old fella can play and score the 68 runs he needs to get his 2,000 runs for the Club. Good luck Craig.

Player of the Year
The standings at the end of Round 10 follow. With 4 Rounds to go we are now going to stop updating the table and will announce the winner on Presentation Night. Good luck to everyone in the running. There are 18 players in easy striking range of this achievement with more players within striking distance. Good luck.

Juniors
The season starts again on Saturday 31/1/2010 when school resumes.

Seniors
Results from the weekend are:

A1 5/227 defeated Kissing Point 67 – our 5/227 was centered around a large partnership between Gav Taylor (84) and Alex Robertson (66). It was a huge score on what was a tricky pitch at times. In the bowling, Matt Spalding (0/3 off 5) and James Makin (4/13 off 8) bowled tightly early on, then Peter Stott, Scott Henderson and Matt Dawson picked up 2 wickets each.

A2 136 lost to Wahroonga 165 – details to follow but a turn-up with an important loss to 4th placed Wahroonga. We remain in 3rd spot but in a tighter competition.

Colts
Red Vs Normanhurst-Warrawee – match abandoned at Turramurra Oval.

Blue Vs Kissing Point – Sunday game, scores to follow.

B1 7/184 defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee 182 – another important match playing against Normanhurst who are a very strong one-day team. Although being 5th on the ladder they have had the wood on us lately beating us in our last two clashes. They won the toss and batted. A few quick wickets had them 2/20 before they fought back to 50 before losing another wicket. This brought their key batsman to the crease and he looked good cracking a few boundaries. Once again Rhino Cherrie delivered, catching the edge and Tim Millington took a screamer diving to his right at 1st slip. A few wickets followed and we had Normo on the ropes at 6/100. To their credit they fought back with some hard hitting and posted a challenging 182 before being dismissed from the last ball of the innings. Rhino continued his superb one day form picking up 4/15 from 8 overs while Rowan Keating 1/24 and Scott Jobson 2/44 were great in support. Rhino also took two catches and run out.

Our innings started off with a bang with Tim Worthington smashing his way to 39 off 20 balls. This knock included eight fours and gave us an early advantage as we surged to 1/66 from the first ten overs. From here we were able to pace our run chase.Best with the bat wereMatt Scoular (38) and Tim Millington (26) before a controlled innings from Scott Jobson (29 not out) saw us home with an over remaining.

B2 7/111 defeated Mt Colah 107 – another good win for the boys. Losing the toss and fielding first, we struggled to take early wickets but managed to keep the runs down, going into drinks after 20 overs with them 1/44 with Nick Starr (1/16 off 7). However, after drinks we were able to make the crucial breakthrough we needed, with Tim Starr (1/7 off 6) removing the other opener before Lachlan McBrien (1/31) claimed the prized scalp to have them on the ropes. From then, Ben Nolan (3/12 off 6, including a stunning 1 handed caught and bowled), Simon “Blocker” Roche (2/8 off 3) and Geoff Richards (1/8 off 7) tore through the middle and lower order to dismiss them for 107. A good day in the field as well, with stand in skipper Adam Walter taking 2 catches, with Alex Connell, Mark Bennett, Duncan Moore and Lach McBrien taking 1 a piece.

What should have been a straightforward chase almost ended in disaster, with Alex Connell (19) and Duncan Moore (14) the only ones from the top 6 to make double figures, and after 23 overs were struggling at 7/62. However, our strength all season has been our even contributions and depth throughout the team, and an unbroken stand of 49 from Geoff Richards (32*) and Ben Nolan (18*) saw us home with 4.3 overs to spare. This win sees us retain our 10 point buffer at the top of the ladder.

C1 92 defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee 79 – a really important game for us playing 2nd placed Normo with us just out of the top 4. Batting on a Mt Ku-ring-gai pitch that held up and a slow outfield this was always going to be a battle of attrition especially against an attack that lacks pace and made scoring even more difficult. We scrapped to 92 thanks largely to DA who top scored for the match with 30. The next best score was 13 to give an indication of how difficult to bat. We had to bowl and field well to defend the total and we did. Andrew Watt chose a good day to be ‘on-song’ and took 3 key wickets for 23. He got very good support from Greg Stoneham with 2/10 (8 overs), Craig Hutchinson 2/20 and Eric Junkkari 1/5 (3 overs). The fielding was also a big factor. While putting down a couple, DA took 2 screamers and Eric got the big wicket with one of his special flat throw run-outs. This now puts us back in the top 4 in a tight competition.

C2 8/132 lost to Hornsby 190 – playing 4th placed We played 4th placed Hornsby at Montview. They had a solid opening partnership of 100 in 20 overs before we managed to make a double break-though after some good bowling pressure from us. We managed to dismiss them all for 190, with wickets going to Narendra (3/17)and Sonny Kulkarni (3/13) who dismissed 6 batsmen in the space of 6 overs to finish them off in 38 overs. Our run chase started well with a opening partnership of 70 between regular opener Chris Williamson and our usual #10 Fergus Waterson We missed a number of our regular batsmen and wickets fell at a regular rate thereafter. We were unable to keep the run-rate under control and ended the day on 132 for 8 to bat out the remaining overs.

C3
White 5/152 defeated Normanhurst-Warrawee 5/148 – given our top position on the table, we now feel we are under pressure to beat all comers. We were up against a Normanhurst side who had lost only once since round 3 and were running a tight 3rd behind us. After winning the toss and choosing to bowl as usual , we restricted Normo to 5/148. Best were James Creais (2/39) with Brett Hawkins, Andrew Fiedler (3 catches) & Riley Miedler the other wicket takers. Pratah Sinnetamby (16), Riley Miedler (42) and Dave Creais (17) ably supported Brendan Harkin (56 no) to see us home albeit with our usual middle-order jitters, to finish at 5/152 with 3 overs to spare.

Blue 7/145 defeated St. Ives 8/139 – yep we lost the toss again and we had to field first. A bit of a frustrating day in the field as we feel that we gave them too much. Vikas Manchanda was able to get 3/30 followed by Ian Nichol on 2/21 and Nat Mistry having to settle on 2/19 after we dropped 3 of his catches (sorry Nat). St Ives managed to get to 139.

Going in to bat Russell Smith and Mike Fitzpatrick managed to hold out and take some shine off the ball before Russell made his way back followed shortly by Mike. Vikas and Claudio van Blerk were in and started to gain momentum before Vikas departed. Rahul joined Claudio in a great 72 run partnership, Rahul Sabherwal was out on 23 and Claudio smashed his way to 66, which included four great sixes. The rest of us made our way in and out with Nat hitting the winning runs. We beat St Ives with one and half overs in hand.

D1 3/183 defeated Glenhaven 8/172 – by far the toughest game we have had playing Glenhaven at on a very slow Northholm Grammar outfield. They got stuck into us rather early and posted a competitive 172 but our bowlers all chipped in nicely with the top wicket takers being Roger Friend 2/24 and Julian Raffel 2/27 and Marco Delgado 1/9. Once again our batting was well tested chasing down this score, and after an extremely slow start due to accurate bowling from Glenhaven, we were able to get the runs with an over to spare, thanks to some patient batting and worthy contributions from Lachlan Vile 66no, Julian 45no and Allan Raffel 30. This win puts us into 2nd place cementing our positioned in the top 4 and giving us a chance to close in on 1st place.

D2 156 tied with Castle Hill RSL 9/156 – winning the toss we set out to get the batting monkey off our back after a run of poor performances in recent rounds, and were pleased to turn in a more respectable total of 156 thanks to an in-form Ben Pilipowski (31), batting for the first time at 3 and liking it, assisted by good knocks from Ankit Grover (29) and Peter Flook (24) and supported by Sahil and Rajesh Talpade and Josh Murray-Howard, all of whom stuck around to make double figures.

Our bowlers made steady inroads but were put to the test when the Castle Hill middle order began hitting out in pursuit of an all too gettable total on this small ground. A nail biting finish ensued with Castle Hill top scorer falling to a brilliant catch at point by Shankar Ravi off the bowling of Peter Flook with the scores locked on 156. Bowling for WPHC the honours were shared equally by Niranjan Sundararaj (2-24), Ankit Grover (2-47), Ben Pilipowski (1-12), Sahil Talpade (1-24) and Peter Flook (1-26), while Gareth Linaker put in a superb effort behind the stumps with three catches and two run-outs to his account. In all a great team effort to pull off an unforgettable result.

Not surprisingly the result of this match is pending appeal. Whatever the outcome nothing will take away from us what should remain our greatest fight back and most thrilling finish of the season.

One for the road
Got to hand it to Luke Christensen (D2) who announced after Round 2 that he now knew how much he drink the night before a game after getting his highest score of 38. Move forward to Saturday morning (Round 10) and Luke ‘phones through unable to play – he had a bit too much on Friday night, stubbed his toe somewhere/somehow and couldn’t walk and had to pull out. Looks like the lesson may have been forgotten.

Iron Man
A little known fact is that Peter Westerberg (D2 Captain) has not missed a game since his debut in 2002-03. Records aren’t kept of this but it would have to be close to a Club record. Last weekend Peter decided to use his ribs to play a ball rather than his bat and managed break a bone. But not one to miss a game Peter played again, dosed up on pain killers to get on the field. He didn’t test out the injury batting getting a first ball duck but did manage to test the pain barriers in a Group celebration at the end of the game that finished in an exciting tie. What fantastic commitment! Well done mate.

Commitment
Just on commitment how about Fergus Waterson’s effort (C2). Fergus had to take a flight out to the US and leave by 3.30 pm. As he usually bats at number 10, we batted him as an opener to allow him to get away early. But....at 4.20 he was still batting at 46* and trying to win the game. He got out at 46 and raced to the airport in a cloud of applause for his great effort. Secretly we are hoping he missed his flight and will be available for next week's game. Well done Fergus.

Game changer
One of the stories behind the story is the 1-day performance of B1 player Ryan Cherrie. In a very tight comp our B1’s have won 3 in a row after losing every 1-dayer last season. The game breaker has been Ryan 'Rhino' Cherrie. Coming on first change Rhino's pace and bounce has changed every innings so far. He has picked up 10 wickets at 6.60 in our last three matches at an economy rate of 2.75. He has also taken three catches and two run outs. Well done mate – on fire.

Seniors
The Seniors started up again on the weekend and the results follow:

A1 190 defeated Vs Castle Hill RSL 100 – another good win – the team is playing very well at the moment. We scored 190 batting first despite a slow outfield. Nick Bennett held the innings together with 54 and was well supported with good contributions throughout the order. Bill Peterkin marked his return from injury by belting a quick-fire 35. Castle Hill were never in the hunt. Peter Stott was terrific with 3 for 11 off 8, and as usual Scott Henderson and Matt Spalding were too good for the batsmen. Simon Smyth also returned from injury with a quick-fire 18* and a miserly 1 for 16 off 5 overs.

A2 3/50 defeated Glenhaven 46 – after winning the toss on a grassy Turramurra wicket we put Glenhaven into bat. After a demolition show by our opening bowlers we had them struggling at the 15 over mark at 7/19. Darren Morrow finished with figures of 4/7 off 8 alongside Dylan Brogan with 4/11 after restricting Glenhaven to a mere 46 runs. We comfortably made the runs in the 16th over to secure a few early beers at the pub with Darren again in the act with a 15 not out to see out the victory. A few other fella’s chipped in but it was never in doubt after such a great bowling performance.

Colts Red defeated WPHC Blue – scores are not yet available but the result is available. Best batting for the Blues were Russell Ingram with 39, Taylor Paton 30 and Chris Milojevic an important 37 to set a competitive total. The Red’s fell short with scores to be updated shortly.

B1 9/147 defeated Ku-ring-gai Chase 9/142 – a big matchup between 1 Vs 2 and finally a chance for us to move into 1st place. Batting first we got a competitive score on a slow ground but had to bowl well. There were lots of 20’s but no one was able to push on. Best for us was Andrew Graham (24*) with his best score of the season.

In a close game Andrew Joyce fired again and got match winning figures of 5/21 of his allocated 8 overs. Ryan Cherrie chipped in with 2/24 to give us the valuable 6 points.

B2 7/184 defeated Pymble 113 – turning-up to the usually lightning fast Greenway Park only to find ankle deep grass covering the field was not what we were expecting, however the boys made the most of the uncharacteristic conditions to record a strong win. Winning the toss and batting first, the plan was to keep wickets in hand for the later stages to allow our longer than average batting lineup to give it a real crack at the death, and that is exactly how it went. Reaching the 20 over mark at 4/57, we had possibly lost too many wickets early, with Tim Starr (35) and James McBrien (14) the only ones to reach double figures. However, these wickets brought together Geoff Starr (72*) and Adam Walter (37) who shared in a 105 run partnership and saw our total up to a more than competitive mark.

With the ball we could not have had a better start, with Ben McNamara (4/26 off 8) clean bowling the opener with the first ball of the innings. We continued to chip away with the ball, and when their one run scorer was forced to retire on 53 (out of the team total of 68), the wickets began to tumble. Pymble retained a faint chance of victory until their last hope was run out by a James McBrien direct hit to put the result beyond doubt. The other wicket takers were Lachlan McBrien (1/17 off 5), Simon “Blocker” Roche (1/8) and Andrew “Acid” Percival (1/5), Acid taking a wicket with his first ball of the season.

Another solid all round performance from all the boys which sees us retain our 10 point buffer at the top of the table.

C1 174 defeated St Ives 135 – an important game to keep us in the chase for the Semi Finals. Batting first best for us was Bray Stoneham with 40, Nathan Fathers returned to form with 33 and a cameo 30* from Gamini Jayawardane gave us a good total. St Ives were never in the hunt with steady wickets falling to good bowling and fielding. Andrew watt 3/26 and Eric Junkkari 3/21 broke the back of St Ives but Craig Hutchinson was the star with 2/16 from 8 overs. How about Bray Stoneham who took 4 catches including a beauty on the boundary. We are sitting just out of the top 4 but once we get our full strength side on the field it will take a good team to beat us. With the holiday break now over results should start to flow again.

C2 9/122 defeated Berowra 118 – playing Berowra in this 1 Vs 2 match we knew that we were in for a tough game as we were playing the only undefeated team, who have won all their games this season, 4 of them outright. We bowled and fielded with great discipline to have Berowra all out for 118 in 31 overs. All the bowlers were outstanding with Nikunj Patel (3/9 in 6 overs) and Steve Baker (4/29 in 6 overs) and Chris Williamson (2/8 in 4 overs). We managed to reach their score in a nail biting finish with 9 wickets down in the 38th over to inflict a very satisfying first defeat on Berowra. Good contributions by Chris Williamson 29, Peter Lees 32 and Richie Cuskelly with a 24 not out to steer us home.

C3 White 5/161 defeated WPHC Blue – an unusual match-up between 2 WPHC teams who are running 1st and 2nd. The White team Young Bucks managed to prevail this time over the more experienced Warhorses from the Blues. White’s won the toss and bravely bowled on a scorching hot Annangrove Oval, hoping to restrict the Blues to a get-able total.

The total would have been heaps more gettable if the White’s didn't bowl 30 no balls & wides, but they managed to restrict the Blues to 7-153 (+ 2 ret hurt). The Blues started to gain some momentum & had Michael Mahinthan retire on 25 due to an edge hitting him on the lip & he went off to get stitched up. The second retirement was Felix Quah who will be out for a while with a possible cracked rib. Rahul Sabherwal , got stuck in before being caught on 25.
Best performers with the ball for the Whites were James Creais & Taki Manolelis each with 2 wickets.

The White’s turn to bat and they banked on the strong opening pair of Brendan Harkin (48) & Riley Miedler (56) to knock off the majority of the total themselves, which they did putting on 90 for the 1st wicket. The Blues bowlers kept posing plenty of questions to us, but a cameo of 29 by Andrew Fiedler helped get the White’s home with 10 balls and 5 wickets in hand.

D1 5/91 defeated Berowra 71 – after winning the toss and sending Berowra in to bat in really hot conditions, our bowlers performed superbly, limiting Berowra to 71 all out. The pick of the bowlers were Chris Grima 2/10, David Behelevanas 2/13 and Lachlan Vile 2/20.

Always tricky chasing a low total in that at one stage we found ourselves at 3/8 but steady partnership between Tom Considine 49 and Chris Grima 20no got us there in the end with overs to spare

This is a good win against the 1st placed side, were 3 points adrift from 1st and 2nd and happy with the state of commitment and levels of depth available for the business end of the season.

D2 82 lost to Galston-Glenorie 110 – a big game for us against 3rd placed Galston. We needed to win to push back into the top 4. After bowling them out for a low score in 36 overs we had our chance to run them down. Not to be this match as could only make 82. Individual scores will be available shortly.

The long way home
We have a long history of players travelling long distances to play on the weekend. The most famous is Mark Taylor (1998/99) travelling from New Noumea to play before flying to London that night and Tony Hadley’s regular visits from Perth (2005-06) and back to play.

Two standout though. Bill Peterkin drove down from the Gold Coast (16/12/2006) to play an A1 game and got a golden duck. The latest is Peter Heidegger (C2 Captain). Peter was coaching the U12 Rep Team at Lismore and drove home straight after the game on Friday afternoon. After the 10 hour drive he got his chance to bat and kept the tradition alive by scoring a golden. Must be something about these trips from the Far North Coast.

Unusual catch
Eric Junkkari (C1) is now approaching his 350th wicket but got an unusual one on Saturday. Bowling a leg-side full toss the batsman managed to get it off the back of the back, ricochet off is head (no helmet) and then have the ball lob out to a standard cover. The player must have a hard head as he showed no reaction.

A tight finish – the inside story
Well done to Chris Thorndyke who provided this ball by ball insight into the B1 thriller on the weekend:

“Five overs remain in the match with Ku-ring-gai Chase needing 20 runs with three wickets in hand.
• The next three balls go for 9 runs before James Kealy takes a big wicket, with the batsman hitting it straight to Andrew Joyce at point.
• The next two balls are dots leaving 11 runs to win off 24 balls with two wickets in hand.
• Ryan 'Rhino' Cherrie comes back into the attack. The first four balls concede three runs including two hit in the air just out of catching range.
• The next ball cleans up their number 10 and the last ball is a dot.8 runs to win off 18 balls with only one wicket in hand.
• Matt Thorndyke is in the pressure situation of bowling the next over – a crucial one. Two runs are hit off the first three balls...tension is building, only 6 runs to win off 15 balls.
• With the field back, their gun bat doesn't want a single and attempts to belt Matt out of the park. The ball is hit long and high towards cow corner, looking like it might go for six to win the match for Ku-ring-gai Chase. The player of the match Andrew Joyce had other ideas running faster than Usman Bolt along the boundary before diving and taking a screamer just cm's off the ground. We win by 5 runs. AJ takes two catches and five wickets.”
